Bias., but claws very broad, flat, and blunt(as inPelagodroma
Reich.), the tarsus exceeding themiddle toewith claw bythe length of the culmen (to nasal tube), and the first quillequaltoorlongerthan thethird.Type, Thalassidromaliueata Peale.
The
type-speciesiscoloredabovemuch
likeOceanifcsoceanicus,but very differentlybeneath, thebellyandflanksbeing whitemarked
with wedge- shapedstripesof dusky.Some
of the under wing-coverts are likewise white,asisalso the basal pcirtion of the rectrices.The webs
of thefeet arewhollydusky.The
tarsiarebooted, as in Oceanitcs.The
genus isnamed
in honorof Mr.TitianR. Peale,the veryaccom- plishednaturalistof theUnitedStatesE.xploring ExpeditionunderCom- modore
