Exposure to Air Pollutants, Benzene, Hemglobin Levels

Benzene is one of the hazardous substances contained in fuel oil and the population at high risk of exposure is the operator of fuel oil (BBM) filling in the General Fuel Filling Station (SPBU). From the research report on benzene will have an impact on the center of blood cell production which will disrupt the hematopoietic process which inhibits the growth and maturation of erythrocyte cells resulting in a decrease in hemoglobin levels. This study aims to determine the relationship between the duration of exposure to air pollutants (benzene) and hemoglobin levels in gas station employees in Blitar District. The research method used is cross sectional. Research subjects were gas station employees who worked for more than 1 year as fuel filling operators using purposive sampling as many as 30 respondents. Respondents carried out complete blood sampling to determine the amount of hemoglobin levels, with an average hemoglobin level (52.6%) 10 male respondents had normal hemoglobin values and 4 female respondents (36.3%) had normal hemoglobin values.Spearman statistical test showed no correlation between the duration of benzene exposure with hemoglobin levels of male respondents (p = 0.194), as well as hemoglobin levels of female respondents (p = 0.937). Suggestions for further research are to examine the level of benzene concentration in the air to determine the level of air pollution and location in place with more intense exposure.
