Journal of Curriculum Indonesia 6 (1) (2023) INTRODUCTION
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a terminology that covers all technical equipment for processing and delivering information. This includes two aspects, namely information technology and communication technology, which are two concepts that cannot be separated. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) implies all activities related to the processing, manipulation, management, and transfer of information between media (Muhammad et al., 2011). Information and Communication Technology (ICT) cannot be separated from the internet where the use of the internet can reach students anywhere without any space and time restrictions (provided that it is connected to an internet connection).
Learning utilization here helps learners in obtaining data and information in the form of text, graphics, video and audio at the same time. Currently, Android-based smartphone users in Indonesia reach 160.23 million users which is equal to 58.6% of the total population making Indonesia the 4th largest smartphone user country out of 10 other countries namely China, India, United States, Brazil, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Germany and Vietnam.
The use of computing technology for learning has been observed in various ways. In recent decades, electronic learning or e-learning has been adopted and used by public schools and all learners around the world (Mamat & Azmat, 2013). They are familiar with e-learning terminology and technology but only recently. The rapid development of mobile technology over the years has created a new field known as mobile learning. Mobile learning is the next generation of mobile device-based e-learning. Wireless technologies such as IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, and GPRS used in informal learning development projects are the next generation of mobile-based e-learning.
English language learning often finds learners who lack motivation to learn and even tend to be passive and hesitant to try to apply it. Not a few learners ignore the subject when it is taking place in class. Android-based interactive learning media is presented to be an alternative learning media for students that can be accessed anytime and anywhere and can even be applied by means of online or offline so as to provide convenience for students. The use of learning media based on android applications has an influence on learning outcomes and has received positive responses from students in previous studies (Sau & Cahayani, 2022). The use of learning media is an inseparable part and is already something that is integrated with the learning methods used. Increasing the use of media based on android applications is a challenge in performing duties as a teacher in order to achieve learning objectives. Presentation of material packaged in one screen that can be held by hand displays an attractive presentation, is easily accessible, and the delivery of material is easily understood by students.
Research that has been conducted by (Prasetyo et al., 2015) that the use of ICT-based learning media in which there are android applications can increase student learning motivation and make learning more active and interesting so that it fosters student interest in learning which has an impact on improving student learning outcomes. In addition, the results of research conducted by (Valk et al., 2010) that the use of learning media based on android applications provides excitement novelty, fun and interest for students during the learning process so as to generate student interest in the implementation of learning activities. offline application access to learning outcomes has a positive influence on learning interest variables (Fitria & Wahyoedi, 2021). In addition, the use of renewable ICT-based media also utilizes the proximity of technology to current students to provide its own interest for students to access the material in the application so that the learning intensity of students increases. The higher learning intensity of students will have an impact on student learning outcomes and has a high probability of improving student learning outcomes (Prasetyo et al., 2015).
Journal of Curriculum Indonesia 6 (1) (2023)
The author has conducted pre-research several times then in September 2021. Based on the results of the pre-research that the author conducted at SMA Negeri 7 Palembang where the sample or object of research in this pre-research was class XI students, then used as an analysis need in pre- research. Based on the results of pre-research observations, it is known that as many as 65.63% of respondents like English lessons, while the others do not really like these lessons. In addition, the results of pre-research observations also show that the most difficult material to understand is Report Text material (providing scientific information) which is indicated by 21.88% of respondents choosing Theory compared to a number of other Theories. This is also indicated by the scores of students who did not complete the KKM. So, the author chose Report Text Theory as the material to be used in the development of learning media in the future research conducted. one of the efforts to solve this research problem where as many as 46.88% of respondents choose visual- auditory learning styles or learning styles by using information delivery media that has audio (sound) and visual (image) characteristics in the form of sound videos and 90.63% of respondents have Android smartphones so that respondents also have an interest in alternative English learning media to be used to achieve better learning outcomes.
The author will make an innovation on alternative learning media such as what students need based on the results of the pre-research as described above. This is because current technological advances have provided many conveniences in dealing with various types of problems or problematics, especially in the field of education. Moreover, if educators are able to take advantage of the development of current digital advances, it means that it will be very easy to meet the needs of students. One of the innovations that will be built by the author is the utilization of android smartphones which have now become one of the mandatory items for a large number of students in supporting their learning activities.
Previous research with the title Online Learning Applications at English for Academic Purposes Training at PGRI Semarang University during the Covid-19 Pandemic showed that EAP (English for Academic Purpose) Training used online learning applications during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely Google Form, WhatsApp, and the iSpring Free 9 application where the research showed the learning process was constrained by the internet network. Based on the success of the research and these constraints, researchers will conduct research on the development of Android- based learning media that can be accessed online (within the network) and offline (outside the network). Furthermore, based on the pre-research that has been done, researchers will conduct research, namely the Development of Android-Based Interactive Learning Media for High School English Subjects Report Text Material.
