Drebitko Yevheniia Week 9
Are some people better than others? A question which might cause insane confusion, and the answer to which I will try to present in this paper. We are all aware of the fact that some human beings are more creative, some are more beautiful, in brief, everyone has their advantage. But how can we put all these features together and clearly state who is better than someone else?
First and foremost, we should take into account that something good is positive, while worse is negative. As was mentioned above we cannot put together all the peoples`
qualities and draw a conclusion about someone`s personality. Thus, it follows that we can define who is better than someone else in particular field.
When Thomas Jefferson said, “All men are created equal,” he didn’t mean that we’re all born with the same virtues or talents in life. He was not denying that obvious truth. But despite our natural differences, he believed our lives were of equal value. For Jefferson, all people should have the same rights and the same responsibilities as one another. In the moral sense, none could be superior or worth more than another. But if we go further into history, we can take a look at Picasso. A great artist of all times, he certainly completely revolutionized modern art in the twentieth century. However, even he has his misdeeds. To illustrate, he treated women awfully and catastrophically. This can easily show us that he is better in the area of art, although he is worse in personal life.
Another instance is Steve Jobs. He was notoriously rude, some might say downright abusive with his subordinates. He parked in handicapped spots, he stole others’ ideas and passed them off as his own, and he ignored his family, particularly his eldest daughter, whom he abandoned. The picture we get is that he was a nasty piece of work, a ruthless egomaniac who felt completely justified in walking all over others to achieve his goals.
Once again, his insolent attitude towards his employees and family members cannot be supported and demonstrated as something good. But his `achievements` are covering up everything and he enjoys great popularity among entrepreneurs despite his sins.
When you imply that somebody is better than another person, what comes to mind?
Looks, talent, personality, wealth, intelligence, fame? Well some people are born with talent, they develop a good personality at a young age, they are born into a wealthy family,
they make the right choices in life which coincidentally bring them onto a higher pedestal.
Some people are better looking, some people are born famous, some people are born with the correct amount of resources to easily become intelligent, while others have
unsuspected problems like diseases, disabilities and many other. Take the Queen of England as an example, no matter how hard you try, there is no way you are going to be better than her, why? Due to the fact she was born the queen, you were not and no matter what you do you won't become either the queen or the king.
Think of it from a scientific point of view. We are all born with different genes and some people have more traits that are favorable in every kind of situation possible. It is a hard pill to swallow and that is why many people don't accept it as truth. The complications start when you define the word "better". Some people are smarter, more talented, stronger both physically and mentally on top of being attractive and having good social skills and
maturity. Or is it someone who tries their best every day and never feels sorry for
themselves on top of being happy and makes other people happy. It is a different choice for everyone, but I would prefer the second option, as it demonstrates the fact that what you are is because of what you have put an effort into, not because you were given those achievements out of the blue.
To conclude, one can assume that there is no general rule that someone is better than someone else in everything, but rather in a particular situation and area. In spite of the fact that we are all born equal, one can deny it by mentioning people born with disabilities, they do not control it, this is just what they are meant to be. So from this point of view, we can now clearly state that you can be better in a certain field of something, but everyone has their inabilities and there is no way of summarizing everybody`s features and defining whether they are better than someone else.
