Aug the 24, 1862
I take this for my oppertunity to write a fiew lines to you to
let you know how I get along I am as well as I was when I left home: we are now in Poartage and expect to remane here untill Thursday next I do not know where we shall make the next stand: we have a good natured Compan they seam to all agree. when we are not on drill they play ball and sing their union songs I have not seen any [?] among the soldiers since I have been here. I have not drawn any Money yet nor Clothing I do not kno when [2]
we will Our Captain says he Can not tell but we have some incouragement of having them this week O how I wish I knew how you all g along at home Francis you bee a good boy and love and obey your mother in all things Anna you must be a good girl Foney you must be good Nauncy you must kiss the Babey for me: I wissh I knew
how you get along for Bread if you get this time enough to write to me so that I can get it next Thursday tell all about how you get along See Mr Collins and try and get them Cows where you can have the use of them as soon as you can I do not expect to Come home before I leave

Cathararene do not think that I inlisted because I did not think any thing of my famely as some may tell you what induced me to inlist was love for my Country and love for my famely and love to God and I trust that the Allmighty will bring me off Conquerer though I die I know that you have a greate deal left on your hands All I can say to you is I will try to help you what I can And you must trust in God for the rest if you write to me while I stay here direct your letters to Daniel Hall
