The Concept Of Reading Comprehension a. Definition of Reading

According to Tarigan, reading is a process in which the reader receives a message or information from the writer through print media. Reading is a learning process in which information is conveyed from the writer to the reader through the use of written form. Reading is a complex cognitive process that involves decoding symbols to construct or infer meaning (reading comprehension).

Wood in Lyznayanti, the reading process involves the three processes. 1) reading is a very complex process, 2) reading is a goal-oriented process and 3) reading is a thinking process.

The Concept of SQRA Strategy

When you survey, you should also review any figures, graphs, maps, or tables in the chapter and the title (the textual explanation that accompanies each). The purpose of a chapter review is to quickly learn what the chapter is about before you read it in its entirety. The second step in the SQRA reading strategy is asking questions as you read.

For example, for the chapter entitled “Housing Dog Training,” you might develop the question, “How many ways are there to housetrain a dog?” or “What does it entail to potty train a dog?” If a chapter heading contains multiple ideas, you can formulate a question for each idea. Always remember to use the chapter heading to develop questions – do not use the conclusion, summary, introduction or the text to develop your questions. The R in the SQRA stands for reading and represents the third step in the S SQRA reading strategy.

After you have researched the developed chapter questions based on the chapter titles, you must then read the information in the chapter to answer the question you developed. As you read the chapter in an attempt to answer the question you have developed, you may find it necessary to modify your question(s). Make sure you focus as you read and make time to thoroughly answer each question you develop.

After you answer each question, go over each question again to make sure you answered the question completely. Using SQRA will help you understand what you read and prepare a text of what you learn.

Theoretical Framework

The SARA method is a three-step strategy for reading and taking notes from a chapter in a textbook.
