One of the methods that can be used to increase a student's reading comprehension is silent reading for long periods of time. To obtain the information or meaning of the text, students must automatically go through the reading process.

Sustained Silent Reading

It is hoped that the continuous silent reading can help the students to increase their reading comprehension. Students are required to read silently for standardized tests, and sustained silent reading provides effective practice.

Reading Comprehension

Since silent reading time is meant to be uninterrupted, they have to work through trouble spots on their own, which helps them become confident readers. Reading for pleasure is like thinking about how good it is to read or listen to a good story.

The Assessment of Reading

Teacher skilled in adapting material and reading strategies to the students' level of interest and language skills. 31. It includes the effects of an assessment on teaching and learning prior to the assessment itself, that is to say on preparation for the assessment. Washback implies that students have ready access to the teacher to discuss the feedback and evaluation he has given.

True or false items provide a very reliable way to test a student's reading comprehension, provided there is. You will find it much easier and faster; moreover, to write true/false items as multiple choice items, a large number of true/false items can be written on a fairly short reading text. These are questions that require the students to write down specific answers in spaces provided on the question paper.

It is important that students see the first sentence or two without spaces. This will give them a chance to get used to the topic and style of the passage.

Previous Research Finding

Based on the result of the test, it is determined that the average score of students' performance in reading comprehension as variable X is 48.41. Students' achievement of TOEFL score in Elfast English course in Pare, Kediri is considered a fair qualification. The result of the test known that the mean of variable Y (students' TOEFL score) is 54.35.

It means that students' silent reading comprehension ability and TOEFL score have a high correlation. The writer concludes that there is a coefficient correlation between silent reading comprehension as variable Meanwhile, the influence of silent reading comprehension on students' performance on TOEFL score is as high as 29%.

It means that there are other 71% indicators that can influence students' performance in TOEFL score.36. 36 Hapid Ali, The Use of Silent Reading in Improving Students' Reading Comprehension and Their Performance in TOEFL Score in a Private English Course, International Journal of Basic and Applied Science, Vol 01, No.

Theoretical Framework

Iqbal Nurul Azhar and Erika Citra Sari Hartanto, titled 'The Implementation of a Sustained Silent Reading Method to Improve Students'. As a result, the Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) method helps students improve their reading skills. This is very important because it can alleviate their uncertainty when they encounter many textbooks written in English.

Based on theoretical analysis above, (Allington): Voluntary reading is the reading children read at home or on their own when they are not required to do so. This is related to helping children fall in love with reading and to providing lots of reading practice (sustained silent reading [SSR] opportunities). Krashen believes that silent reading programs are the most effective way to teach not only reading skills, but all the skills related to reading.39 So a sustained silent reading method is hoped to increase students' reading comprehension.

The Instrument of Data Collection

So, the sample of this research was the students of SMAN 1 Slahung in class X 1 with a total of 25 students. The Effectiveness of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Method in Reading Comprehension of Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 1 Slahung in Academic Year 2015/2016. The sum of the test items is based on the calculation from the validity and reliability of the test items taken by the students of SMAN 1 Slahung Ponorogo in the academic year 2015/2016.

Validity and Reliability of Instruments

If rxy > rtable, the item is valid.51 The researcher takes correlation coefficient "r" product moment from Pearson in db/df 25 and at 5% of significant stage.52. To determine the use of db/df, the author derived from the sum of the respondent in validity test. Based on the result above, the researcher used 15 valid items as an instrument to get data from the students.

Test reliability is defined as the extent to which the results can be considered consistent or stable.53 An instrument is said to be reliable if the result of measurements on the same taste produces consistency or a stable result. The same applies to validity: the result of the coefficient of (r11) is compared with the rtable of the correlation coefficient "r" product moment.

Technique of Data Collection

In this research, the researcher pre-tested to know the students' reading comprehension, before they were given the treatment. After that, the researcher was given post-test to know the result of the treatment.

RESEARCH RESULT

Research Location 1. General Location

  • Vision, Mission and Objectives a. Vision
  • The Research Schedule

During the academic year, teachers can organize the teaching of learning integrity based on KTSP. In this research, there were five sessions: pre-test, first, second and third treatment with the sustained silent reading method; and the last one was the post test.

Data Description

  • The Data of students’ reading comprehension before taught using Sustained silent reading method
  • The Data of students’ reading comprehension after taught using Sustained silent reading method

The researcher tested the students in pre-test and post-test activities and obtained reading comprehension scores. The students were asked to silently read the text related to the news material and then choose the correct answer to the questions. The teacher asked the students to write down and review the text, and then they discussed the text together after reading it silently.

The students were given the text about “Four ships seized with treasure” with some questions to address the students' reading comprehension. The same was the case with the previous treatments; the students were given some of the literature. The activities were: Students discussed the text together; found the generic structures, the topic sentences, the content of the text, found the difference between news item and the other text, analyzed the moral value, found the difficult words and answer exercise based on the text.

Teacher also gave the exercise or worksheet related to the text read by the students to cover the understanding. The table below shows the score of students' reading comprehension test after they were taught using sustained silent reading method.

Data Analysis

After completing the reading comprehension treatment, the writer performs a post-test to determine the effect of the treatment using the persistent silent reading method. From the table above, it can be seen that he was looking for the mean, range and standard deviation of student scores using this formula below. The normality test is used to measure whether the data is normal or not.

It is one of the most common assumptions in the development and use of statistical procedures. 58. Ho is accepted if₁ at most < Dtable, and Ha is accepted if₁ at most > Dtable. Data normality and students' post-test calculation after using the direct method with the Colmogorov-Smirnov formula.

The hypothesis was: Ha was accepted if table a1 max ≤ D Ha was rejected if table a1 max ≥ D. Because the maximum value of a1 was 0.199 where the figure was less than table D, so the decision was to accept Ha, which would states that the data for the students' post-test after using the sustained silent reading method was normally distributed.

Discussion and Interpretation

There is no difference between the students' reading comprehension before and after they were taught using Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) in the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Slahung Ponorogo in the academic year 2015/2016. Conclusion

Recommendation

It would be better to use sustained silent reading as a method in teaching reading because it can make students more focused on reading comprehension. In the learning process, the teacher should use an appropriate method or media, because it makes students learn English more excited and effective. In the teaching-teaching process, the teacher should give motivation to the students so that the students are eager to learn and understand the material easily.

The author hopes that the students will have a great motivation to improve their reading interest so that their understanding will be better. The researcher hopes that this result of the study can be useful for the latter readers.
