It is expected to provide scientific evidence on the implementation of the cloze test in assessing interactive reading. Obtain information on the use of the cloze test in assessing interactive reading for the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahul Ulum Balong Ponorogo in academic year 2015/2016.

Data Source

Technique of Data Collection

Qualitative interviews are special types of conversations used by researchers to explore informants' experiences and interpretations. Informal interviews provide opportunities to ask participants to explain their perspectives on what the researcher observed. In addition, an interview with some students will also be conducted to explore their opinions on cloze test implemented in the assessment of their reading skills and the steps in the implementation of cloze test.

Systematic means that the observation does not take place incidentally, but must be so fundamental that it covers the area or time in question. In this study, observation will be made to observe the steps of implementing the cloze test in assessing interactive reading.

Technique of Data Analysis

All are designed to collect organized information in a compact, immediately accessible form so that the analyst can see what is going on.19. From the beginning of data collection, the qualitative analyst begins to decide what things mean—they are nothing regularities, patterns, explanations, possible configurations, causal flows, and propositions. The competent researcher considers these conclusions easy, maintaining openness and skepticism, but the conclusions are still there, at first vague and vague, then increasingly clear and grounded.

Verification can be as brief as a fleeting second thought that crosses the analyst's mind while writing, with a brief trip back to the field notes, or it can be thorough and detailed, with lengthy argumentation and review among colleagues to develop "intersubjective consensus," or with extensive efforts to replicate the finding in another data set.20. Thus, readers or analysts will accept explicit and reasoned information about this research.

Verification of Data Validities

Ulum Ponorogo to get deep information about the advantages and disadvantages of cloze tests to assess interactive reading. In addition to that, interviews will also be conducted to collect information about the steps in implementing cloze testing. Then the researcher interviews some students to get their perspectives on the cloze test and the steps in implementing the cloze test.

These data will be triangulated by finding results that all informants agree on. In this research, the researcher uses interview, observation and documentation to get all the data related to the study.

Research Procedure

Lisa added: "Validity is proven when theories interpret information in the same way (draw the same conclusion)".24 . 5) Preparation of any necessary equipment in the research process, such as instruments, etc. In this phase, the researcher analyzes the data obtained from the research process in MA Miftahul Ulum Ponorogo.

Theoretical Background 1. Reading

  • Process of Reading
  • Types of Reading
  • Reading Assessment Task
  • Interactive Reading
  • Cloze Test

Each of the four types of reading and their respective assessments are explained by Brown and Ketabi in detail below. When the reader processes a store of knowledge about print, language, and the world, a top-down process can be used. The cloze test was used as a teaching tool for teachers to improve students' reading skills". 42.

Based on the above concept, a cloze test can be defined as a task that presents participants with some deleted words in a text. 42 Patchara Wonghiransombat, The Cloze Test and The C-Test, article, Thammasat University Language Institute, p. In conclusion, from some of the above opinions, it can be concluded that the cloze test is a test procedure that provides the deleted words in the text.

This type of cloze test consists of deleting words in a certain pattern (eg every seventh word). Brown stated, “Rational occlusion allows the test developer to control the type of deleted word and thereby measure linguistic properties.”48. At this stage, the teacher uses his plan in the learning process of teaching in the classroom.

Assessing students using the cloze test can be done following a few steps given by Burns below: 58. After choosing a text, have the teacher type it and delete some words in the text. Tell them to fill in the blanks in the text with the correct words.

Score the test by counting as correct only the exact words that were in the original text. The test taker gets marks if and only if the answer is exactly like the original word of the text.

Previous Research Findings

This journal concluded that cloze tests and open-ended questions had a significant effect on Iranian intermediate EFL students' reading comprehension and had a positive effect on EFL students' reading comprehension. This will be an easy procedure for teachers to assess the readability of texts, so that children are not put to work on passages that they attack out of frustration. From three previous studies above, it can be concluded that cloze tests have a positive effect for both students and teachers.

The previous research focuses on reading comprehension and compares between two assessment tests, while my research simply exposes about cloze test implemented to assess interactive reading. Therefore, the researcher takes the title "Cloze Task in Assessing Interactive Reading at Eleventh Grade Students of MA Miftahul Ulum Balong Ponorogo".

MA Miftahul Ulum Ponorogo is located on Tasik Madu Street, in the rural Ngraket Sub-district of Balong Regency Ponorogo. Teachers are one of the important aspects in the learning process of education so they should be given great interest by school. KTSP is applied at this school with 19 subjects that must be learned by students in group 11.

The list of subjects learned by eleventh grade students at MA Miftahul Ulum Ponorogo can be seen at Appendix.73.

Specific Data

  • The Steps of The Implementation of Cloze Test in Assessing Interactive Reading to The Eleventh Grade Students of MA Miftahul
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Cloze Test in Assessing Interactive Reading to The Eleventh Grade Students of MA Miftahul

In this example, the teacher used the cloze test to assess the student's .. reading skills, so she prepared a cloze test worksheet. In the next meeting, I would teach the students about the simple past tense in narrative text and about predictive text. Thus, in the assessment task, she deleted the simple past tense in the text titled The Golden Tree.

Whereas fixed ratio is used when I want to know how students understand the structure of a sentence, for example, where is the position of a noun, verb, be, adverb, etc. The Golden Tree” was implemented using rational closure. This was done by calling the students' names on the attendance list so that the teacher knew the students who did not join her class.

Assessment is done to know the extent to which students understand the material after they study it with the teacher. The teacher explained the material about the simple past tense in the narrative text and the short function text announcement. After the teacher presented the material, students were asked to identify the simple past tense in the narrative text.

After completing the task, we discuss the answer in the task together with the teacher. It is important to score the test because, based on the result obtained, the teacher can measure how far the students' understanding of the material is and whether the learning objectives have been achieved or not. This is important to do because this activity helps me to know my students' understanding of the given material.

Moreover, based on the observations conducted, the cloze test could increase students' independence and add their vocabulary wealth. From the conducted interview, observation and documentation it can be concluded that a cloze test can increase students' independence.

In this chapter, the researcher discusses the result of the research based on the statement of the problems. Based on the observation made, the material is about simple past tense in narrative text. Based on the observation and interview, cloze test is prepared by first selecting the text.

Based on the theory exposed by Burns, the assessment of students using the cloze test can be done through several steps, they are: choose a passage, print the passage, complete the cloze activity and mark the test. In determining the deleted words, the teacher can do it based on the types of cloze test. Based on the observation made, Miss Endang implements learning activities that have been prepared in the planning stage.

Here, students are asked to identify simple past tenses that exist in the narrative text provided by the teacher. Based on the theory in the previous chapter, Jacobsen mentioned that assessment can be done in certain ways, such as: managing tests, quizzes, evaluating homework or observing students' reactions to teacher's questions or comments. Based on the observation and interview done, cloze test is applied by first giving the clear instruction to the students.

The teacher instructs the students to fill in the blank space in the given text. Based on the interview and observation made, in the process of test scoring, the teacher uses the exact word method, where the correct answers are simply the words that correspond to the original text. Therefore, it can be concluded that when the teacher uses exact word scoring method, she accepts the answer which is exactly like the original word in the text as in Patchara's theory.

Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of using Cloze test in the assessment of interactive reading to the eleventh grade students of MA. She said that this task can be difficult to perform by students who have the weaknesses in vocabulary mastery. The difficulty faced by the students is considered as the disadvantage of using cloze test to assess students' interactive reading work by her.

So when this data is analyzed with the theory, it can be said that cloze test is only suitable for reading comprehension.
