Minutes of P.R. Committee Herrick Memorial Library

October 20, 2008

Chair: Ellen Bahr

Attendees: Brian Sullivan Sara Arrasmith Jessy Santana

The meeting was convened at 1:00 p.m. by E. Bahr. S. Arrasmith volunteered as secretary for the meeting.

“Marketing Library Services,” a webinar hosted by NYLINK will be given October 22, 2008 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. All library staff are invited to view this event in the seminar room.

Amy Rummel has agreed to have her marketing class work on a plan for the library. The committee wishes to postpone work on a unified marketing campaign until next semester, so as to avoid duplication of effort by the marketing class.

The women’s suffrage event has been cancelled.

S. Arrasmith suggested that the Political Science Club be invited to use the commons area of the library for their election night event, if one is planned. Usually, they use Nevins Theatre, but they may be interested in having multiple stations available on the large screen televisions. S. will contact Jeff Sluyter-Beltrao with the proposal.

The library tours offered in early October were successful. They were well attended. It has been suggested that students generally have more available time on Thursdays and tours will be held in the fall at the beginning of the semester at a variety of times, including evening hours. Front desk students will be taken on a tour as part of worker orientation and scripts will be kept at the desk so that they may conduct tours upon patron request.

An open house event is still in planning stages. A suggestion was made to hold a block party-type event with the participation of campus clubs toward the beginning of the spring semester. The theme would be tropical island/getaway. The participants may be given a “passport” to stamp as they visit areas of the library where the clubs could set up tables and have activities. The possibility of a prize for having all the stamps at the end of the event was discussed. E. Bahr will speak with Dan Napolitano to see if his office is interested in participating and receive his input regarding such an event.

Invitations to the clubs should be written and mailed so that the groups know what resources are available for their meetings/activities.

A game tournament was suggested, such as Scrabble or Yahtzee. E. Bahr suggested a Wii tournament.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:35 p.m.
