DEAR BRETRENー
The exhibit here made of the condition of our Churches
,
as set forth in their severalll!tters to t~e Association̲ ,
is. fa~ from being as a whole,
cheering. Some of the Churches have prospered during the year,
but more have evI‑ dently declined. How,
under God,
are we to bring about a better state of things? The letters show one thing conclusively. Those Churches which have had most pastoral labo!̲ beslowe~ upon them,
have been most blessed and are most pr'osperous. Mel'e Pl'eαchuig on the Sabbath‑once or twice a month wi11 accomplish but little toward~a high standard of piety,
intelligence and efficiency among our memb巴rs. The̲ Churches̲ oughi to expect ‑their pastors to watch" as w巴11as preach." Less pl'each,例gand more watching would be productive of greater permanent good than we now enjoy. The Churches ought,
as far as pra~icable , to enable their pastors to give them‑selves ωholly to the wOl'k." Then everyωorhthy pastor would endeavor to raise the standard of Christian excellencc much above its present measure. He would himself be mOI'e studious
,
his sermons would be 1n01'e instrtlctive. and,
of cOtIrse,
his practical influence much greαter. He would become beUer acquainte e.with the real condition of his flock,
and could more successfnlly traIn them t9 "~very good word ~nd_ work." W e would respectfully submIt thes~ hints for the consideration of a11 concerned,
and pray that' God nIay grant us a11 a greater meaaure of religious prosperity and e町oymentduring the com‑Isgyear:
i( C.
