Confidence is the key to making students brave to speak English even with limited vocabulary. What are the strategies that the students from the English language teaching department use to increase their confidence in speaking. The definition of students' strategy in this study is the ways, steps and efforts that students make to increase their confidence in speaking English.

Speaking

We need to be able to speak fluently so that listeners can respond and hear clearly about the conversation being discussed. Students' low participation in speaking means they have little time to speak. This is caused by the presence of dominant students in the classroom, which means that other students only have a short time to talk.

Self-confidence

As in this research, the researcher will examine the strategies that the students used to increase their confidence when they speak English. Self-confidence is very important for students to be involved in learning activities because those who have self-confidence believe in their abilities and set goals and work hard to achieve their goals. Someone who wants to increase their confidence level should pay attention to some of these aspects.

Self-confidence is a state in which a person has confidence in himself to do something or decide something. According to Kemendikbud (2014), there are some indicators that can be used to observe a person's self-confidence, such as performing activities and giving. Lack of self-confidence can be defined as both psychological obstacles and attitudes that make it difficult for students to speak a foreign language confidently.

A person who wants to increase self-confidence must master various strategies or ways to assist him in increasing self-confidence. A person who has self-confidence will be able to control things that happen with the abilities he has. The strategies mentioned above can be used as a reference to help someone increase self-confidence.

Someone who has self-confidence will definitely always learn from their life experiences, so they will always be in the process of developing to be better than before.

Previous Studies

Second, Salim (2015) examines general self-confidence and its implications for students' performance in oral presentations. The purpose of this research is to describe the level of confidence of Indonesian EFL students in general, to see how academic achievement in oral presentations varies, and to examine the relationship between self-confidence and academic achievement in oral presentations. The results of this study show that students with high levels of self-confidence will speak more fluently in front of the class.

Meanwhile, students with low self-confidence will find it more difficult to speak in front of the class. The purpose of this study is to describe the psychological factors that have a negative effect on the English speaking performance of English students in Indonesia. The results of this study are that the main problem comes from students' fear of making mistakes, feeling embarrassed, feeling indecisive and lacking confidence when speaking English.

This study shows that psychological factors are more dominant in negatively influencing English speaking performance than linguistic factors such as grammar and vocabulary. Finally, Muqorrobin, Bindarti and Sundari (2022) conducted a study entitled Factors Contributing to Learners' Lack of Self-Confidence in Speaking English. This research was conducted to examine the factors that contribute to students' lack of confidence when speaking English.

The findings from this study are that most students have a moderate level of self-confidence and that ability is the most contributing factor in influencing students' lack of self-confidence.

  • Data collection
  • Data Analysis

The population in this research was 132 students of the English Language Education Department of UIN Ar-Raniry batch 2019, who had attended all speaking courses. According to Stark & Trinidad (2007) in research on life experiences or methods to study how a person subjectively perceives an experience and provides an understanding of the phenomenon, the number of participants involved is usually around 1-10 people. The criteria used in this research are first, they must be students of the English Language Education Department of UIN Ar-Raniry from the 2019 batch.

According to Jamshed (2014) a semi-structured interview is an instrument where researchers design interview questions with regular arrangements, but if in the interview process the research participants do not specifically answer the key points of the questions asked, other questions will to be added. to clarify previous answers. After the researcher obtained the interview data from the participants, the next step was to analyze the data. Data analysis in this study used several steps according to the theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014).

In this first step, the researcher will collect the responses from the participants, then summarize the responses by selecting the main points and focusing on the things considered important. In this study, the researcher will identify data related to students' strategies and the challenges students face in increasing confidence in speaking. This step helps the researcher understand what is going on so that the researcher can decide to continue the analysis or try to elaborate on the findings.

The conclusion is written based on the steps according to the research question, so that a clear explanation is provided.

Research Finding

They like to use this strategy because it is easy to implement every day without disturbing others. FM explained that this strategy is very easy to do because it is not limited by time and place. A research participant, RP also mentioned that in order to increase her confidence when speaking, she usually uses this strategy repeatedly until she can master the speaking material for oral presentations.

She also uses this strategy when she is in front of the mirror and when she is riding her motorcycle. In addition, MR also revealed that he often uses this strategy when he is alone. Using this strategy helped him become more confident in speaking and reduce his nervousness.

The same was also expressed by RR regarding this strategy which has benefits in increasing his confidence while speaking. According to AN, this strategy helps her maintain confidence when speaking in public, especially in large and formal forums. The strategy of listening to English songs is also used by students to increase self-confidence while speaking.

They explained that there are several things that need to be faced in order to increase confidence when speaking.

Discussion

He said that students can practice by listening to English songs and watching movies so that their speaking skills become more fluent, which will have a good effect on self-confidence. The second research question in this study is "What are the challenges students face in increasing their speaking confidence?". These challenges were anxiety, lack of vocabulary, lack of self-motivation and loss of concentration.

This is related to Habiburrahim (2020), feeling anxiety is a factor that causes students to feel uncomfortable when they have to speak in front of people or when they have to make an oral presentation. Students are also afraid of being corrected directly by the lecturer, which makes students feel insecure when they have to speak both in front of class and outside of class. Students do not feel enthusiastic and easily lose concentration when they feel unmotivated when they have to speak or give an oral presentation.

If students lack self-motivation, it will lead to them being unenthusiastic and feeling like they do not have good speaking skills compared to their friends. In addition, lack of vocabulary mastery also poses an obstacle for students in speaking. Students will encounter difficulties if they want to convey something but do not know the vocabulary.

These are some of the challenges faced by the research participants in this study in increasing their speaking confidence.

By having the things mentioned above, research participants feel like their confidence in speaking increases. On the other hand, research participants also face several challenges when trying to increase their speaking confidence. However, they also found solutions to these challenges so that they no longer had difficulty increasing their speaking confidence.

Factors affecting EFL learners' confidence in speaking English at MEC English Course Banjarmasin (Doctoral dissertation, Universitas Islam Kalimantan MAB). Relationship between confidence and speaking skills in English teaching and English language and literature preparation students. P5: This strategy helps me to increase my confidence when I speak, but until now, when I'm in public, I'm actually still nervous, but in front of my friends, many people are willing to answer, so that's what makes me confident , when I speak. P5: For example, if we regularly practice this strategy for about 2 or 3 months, we can increase our confidence in speaking. Usually we often practice alone in front of a mirror or in a quiet place, or when we are alone we can try to say what we want to say.
