• FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL COLLEGE, an institution with which Alfred has many ^s- lations in the field of sports and whose news- paper, The Student Weekly, is a fellow member of the Intercollegiate Newspaper Association, was the scene of a disgraceful exhibition of sadism, Thursday, when three men were badly injured as a result of the initiation ceremonies of the "Druids Honorary Secret Sophomore Society".

The honorable Druids attempted to burn triangles on the

J

chest of the highly honored new members. Serious burns resulted in the cases of three students. The Franklin and Marshall Student Weekly in an editorial con- demned the action of the Druids and added the following caustic remarks:

"These men, who are so brave with a three-

-Pa„4- ~ „ j x. H L ' .

root pauuie, oeat imo unconsciousness, ax leasts- one student and sent at least two others to the doctor with blood clots."

The Lehigh Brown and White takes up the cudgel with the following choice excerpt from their editorial on the disgraceful exhibition:

"A moronic and sadistic initiation such as this one is not to be taken lightly. It is easy enough to excuse the brutality and viciousness so often displayed at initiations, hazing sessions, and "tea parties" by saying that it is all in fun and that it promotes discipline, but serious burns, blood clots, and injuries cannot easily be laughed off. Next year, when "Hell Week,"

theoretically banned at Lehigh, breaks out in various degrees of severity, the fraternities would do well to remember the possible conse- quences of unleashed brutality."

Such an affair is not an impossibility here, in Alfred. Of the five fraternities on the camp- us, only Theta Nu has abolished corporal punish- ments in Hell Week.. Why shouldn't the remain- ing four follow suit?

• "AN ACADEMIC EDUCATION can at least train its students to think clearly. It can train them to look at international questions, to look at industrial questions, not with a blind pre- possession in favor of their own country or of their own class, but in the light of those prin- ciples of love, justice and liberty to which all great literature bears witness, and with that calm respect for the objective facts upon which science is based." Sir William David Ross, Co- lumbia University visiting professor, urges edu- cation to combat the "ugly uprush of aggravated nationalism".

Mossien protests slur on Burdick Hall residents

(The policy of the Fiat Lux has always teen to keep from, its pages any personal mud - slinging.

Thoughtlessly, and without any malicious intent, there appeared in last week's College Town, an illus- ion to the "Burdick Scums". Even in the humorous vein of the article, such a quotation should never have teen allowed.

Therefore, we are printing the follow rap at the Fiat Lux editors;

one which carries some personal villification. With this, we consider the issue closed.)
