Squirrel of thegenus
Pet- aurista.Pulo Terutau
(also writtenTrotau and
Trotto), isa small
island lyingabout
fifteengeographic miles
off thewest
coast of theMalay Peninsula, about
fiveand a
half degreesnorth
of the equator.The
speciesmay be known
asPetaurista terutaus sp.nov.

Diagnosticcharacters.
— A member
oftheso-called nitidusgroup, similar to Petaurista nitidula (Thomas) oftheNatuna
Islands, but top ofhead
witha grayish wash,aslighthuffywash
oversidesofbody,and
the black on the endofthetailof greater extent.Color.
— Top
of neck, back,sides, uppersurface of parachute, outer sur- facesofforeand
hindlimbsand
base oftail have the general effect of a brightcinnamon-rufousora bright hazel ofRidgway,clearestand
purest ontop ofneckand
along the upper surface of parachute.Most
of the hairshaveblackishterminalrings,which appeartoa considerable extent along themiddleofback. Alongthe sidesmany
hairs have wide,light buffy subterminalrings.Top
of head a mixture of whitishand
cinna- mon-rufous. Sides ofhead and
neck, a color l)etween buff-pinkand
pinkish buff. Underparts generally, salmon-buff tending toward dull orange-rufous on the parachute. Tail, dull orange-rufous, considerably blackenedtowardthe baseand
with a blackish apex, 70 to 80mm.
long.Feet, ring about eye,
and
small area about mouth, blackish. Posterior half of ear blackish; anteriorhalf,dullorange-rufous.2—

basal length, 57; basilar length, 53.5;. palatal length, 34.2; zygomatic breadth, 43.2; interorbital constriction, 12.4; constriction behind post orbital processes, 16.6; maxillary toothrow (alveoli), 14.2; mandibular toothrow (alveoli), 15.
