FOURTEENTH SUPPLEMENT TO THE AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGISTS' UNION CHECK-LIST OF
NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS.
The
Thirteenth Supplement to the Check-Listwas
issued in July, 1904 (Auk,XXI,
pp. 41 1-424).^ Since this date theCom-
mittee has held six sessions, all except one in Washington, at the following dates: April 21-25, 1905; January 17-20, 1906;
Novem-
ber 16-17, 1906; April 18-23, 1907;
December
12, 1907 (at Phila- delphia); April 15-20, 1908.In view oftheprobableearlyappearance ofathirdedition ofthe Check-List, authorized by the
Union
at the Stated ^Meeting held inNovember,
1906, itseemed
best to theCommittee
to withholditsreportsfrompublicationtilltheresults ofits
work
shouldappear in thenew
Check-List.Now
that the manuscript for thenew
edition is practically completed, it seems desirable that the
Com-
mittee should, in accordance with precedent, give reasons for the changes it has instituted during the last four years, since these cannot be readily indicated in the Check-List. Its decisions involve, as usual, additions to
and
eliminations from the Check-List, changes in nomenclature
and
in the status ofgroups,and
the rejection ofmany
proposedadditions,and
changesinnomenclatureand
status.The Committee
hasaimed
to secure as stable a foundation,as possible for thenew
Check-List, anticipating a few changes innames
thatwould
soon surely arise, as well as those already pro- posed. Nearly all of the nomenclature changes here recorded are due to the strict enforcement of the laAv of priority, and
result from the recent bibliographicwork
of a largenumber
of investi- gators, abroad as well as in America. As
a result of the special interestand
activity in this field,many
previously littleknown
or wholly overlooked early works have been discovered, and
others have been scannedwith greater care.In this connection the
Committee
desires to recognize the im- portant assistance it hashad
from its Secretary, Dr. CharlesW.

Fourteenth Supplement to the A. O. U. Check-List. [f^^Richmond, who
hasplacedfreely atitsdisposal the resultsofyears of bibliographicwork made
in connection with the preparation ofan
Index Catalogueto the genericand
specificnames
ofthe birds ofthe world;some
ofthese results are here for the firsttime pub- lishedand
are indicated as"Richmond, MS." The Committee
also wishes to acknowledge its indebtednessto
him
for compilingand
arranging the presentSupplement
for publication.Covering asitdoes a long
and
prolificperiod,thepresentSupple-ment
is necessarily voluminous,and
in the interest of clearness of presentation has been divided into five categories, as follows: I,Additions; II, Eliminations; III,
Changes
in Nomenclature, in- cludingChanges
in Status; IV, Proposed Additionsand Changes
notAccepted; V, Deferred Cases.Greateffort has been
made
duringthe last two meetings of theCommittee
to cover all the casesknown
to require consideration;as a result the list of 'deferred cases' has been reducedto a small number,
and
probably the greaterpart of these will be settled in timetobe includedin thenew
edition ofthe Check-List.The
geographic ranges of the recentlyadded
speciesand
sub- species have been omitted inthe present Supplement,as a general revision of the ranges of all of the speciesand
subspecies isnow
being
