THE HISTORY OF THE TURKS

This is the God of the Christians,” gave it to his soldiers to be despised;. The city of Coron, and also Pilus, cities of Greece, terrified by the example of the Methonians, submitted to the power of the Turks. Mamaluk, left over from the wars, ordered the Turk in the prisons of Alexandria to be cut to pieces.

Villadamus86, a Frenchman, in whom no zeal was wanting, that pertained to the defense of the city. In this quarrel more than five thousand of the Turks were counted slain. The attacks of the Turk against the city are counted as twenty, and she rejects just as many.

Nevertheless, herein must be noted the Lord's special providence and love toward His oppressed Christians.

COUNTRIES

The world is commonly divided into three parts, Asia, Africa, and Europe;48 Asia is considered the largest in compass, containing as much as both of the others, and is divided into two parts, one called Greater Asia; the other is called Asia Minor. And though the empire of the Turks extends to both; and especially his dominion stands in the other Asia, which is called Asia Minor, extending from the coasts of Europe to Great Armenia, beyond the river Euphrates, and. THE DIVISION OF ASIA MINOR, CALLED CHERONESUS, with certain countries and cities belonging thereto.

CITIES

Sabaea Edessa,60 which is now called Orpha, and in the story of Tobias is called Rages. And so far reaches the compass of Asia Minor, with the countries and provinces belonging to the same, which have once been brought to the faith of Christ, are now in a manner all subject to the Turks. The islands belonging to the aforesaid territories in Asia Minor, which the Turk has obtained, are these:.

ISLANDS

After describing Asia, let's consider the parts and countries of Africa. Where, although the greatest part is either in desolate deserts, or possessed by the priest John, who confesses Christ and his gospel; but even there the Turk has no small share under his authority, as you do. A description of the countries and cities of Europe, which were formerly baptized, but are now subjected and subject to the Turks.

After the Turk had subdued Thrace and Greece, proceeding further into Europe, he conquered other regions and cities, which he also added to his possessions; like,

TOUCHING THE COMING UP AND FINAL RUIN AND DESTRUCTION OF THE WICKED KINGDOM

OF THE TURKS

The tyranny of this Antiochus is generally described in the book of Maccabees. And this is what the Holy Spirit here means about the first beast when he says: The rulers and wise men of the people will be killed and thrown to the beasts.

And the cross with the crown will be taken up into heaven, which will appear no more until the coming of the Lord. And then the coming of the Son of man will appear in the clouds of heaven with heavenly glory,” etc. The health of the lying lamb22 will be clothed with a pair of lion's prey.

Having done this, he subdued Jerusalem, which had previously been in the hands of the Christians, for eighty-eight years.

WILLIAM TYLSWORTH, MARTYR, BURNED AT AMERSHAM

In what number was also one Robert Bartlet, a wealthy man, who, on account of his profession, was turned out of his farm and estates, and condemned to be kept in the monastery of Ashridge, where on his right sleeve he wore a square . piece of cloth, the space of seven years together. From the testimony of the above it follows, moreover, that about the same time of the burning of William Tylsworth (as the men of Amersham say), or the next day after (as the above Agnes mentions) a father Roberts was burned. Buckingham. They were then burned in Amersham within the space of two or three years. Thomas Barnard, a husbandman, and James Mordon, a laborer; they two were both burned at one fire, and there was William Littlepage, who is still living, forced to be burned in the right cheek, and father Rogers, and father Rever alias Reive, who was afterwards burned.

There were thirty more who were burned on the right cheek, and at the same time exposed bundles of branches. The manner in which they were burned in the cheek was as follows: their necks were tied to a post or support, with towels, and their hands were held tightly so that they could not move; and so the iron, because it was hot, was pressed against their cheeks: and so they shewed the prints and marks of the Lord Jesus about them.

THE CRUEL HANDLING OF THOMAS CHASE OF AMERSHAM

After these stinging vipers, who were of the evil crops of Antichrist, had thus in the most cruel and ungodly manner murdered this faithful Christian, they were at their wits' end, and could not find out what change they should make to close their shameful murder with: finally, to blind the ignorant foolish people, these bloody butchers most slanderously caused it by their ministers to be buried abroad, that the aforesaid Thomas Chase had hanged himself in prison; which was a most shameful and abominable lie, for the prison was such that a man could not stand erect or lie still, but stoop, as they say he knew. And yet these holy Catholics had not put an end to their wickedness in this both killing and slandering this godly martyr; but to extinguish the memory of him they had him buried in the wood called Norland Wood, on the highway between Woburn and Little Marlow, to the intent that he should not be taken up again to be seen: and thus it is common, innocent men lay of these clerical priests. Thomas Harding, who was one of this company, was thus, as aforesaid, molested and disturbed in the town of Amersham, for the truth of the gospel, after his rejection and penance performed, was again sought for and brought to the fire in the days of King Henry VIII, and under Dr.

After the martyrdom of these two, I also read of one Thomas Norris, who was also condemned by the bishop for the same cause, that is, for preaching the gospel of Christ, and burned at Norwich on the last day of March a.d. Bermondsey; and against the sacrament of the altar, and for that she uttered these or similar words: That our lady of Wilsdon was but a burnt-tailed elf, and a burnt-tailed stock; and if she could have the help of the men and women who go to her in pilgrimage, she would not suffer her tail to be burnt: and what should the people worship our lady of Wilsdon, or our lady of Crome; for the one is but a burnt turnip, and the other is but a doll: and it were better that men should give their alms at home to poor people, than that they should go on pilgrimage.

LAURENCE GHEST, MARTYR

A NOTABLE STORY OF A FAITHFUL WOMAN BURNED IN CHIPPING-SUDBURY

Webb, sometime servant to Master Latimer, who, while staying at the house of the said William Russell, had several times heard him declare the same. Now when these things are declared to belong to the church, there remains in consequence something to be dealt with in the state, as well as in the commonwealth, which usually follows the state of the church. Furthermore, he affirmed that the Lord would indicate to him that the ecclesiastical state of the Church must be corrected "per vim armorum", that is, "by the sword or force of arms".

From there he moved away to Rome, where a large part of the city wall, on the arrival of the French king, fell down. Which king Henry VII, though he had a sufficient continuance, having now reigned twenty-four years, yet notwithstanding here comes to notice the same thing of which I spoke before, that when the church of Christ by force begin to be injured, and going through disorder and negligence, the state of the Commonwealth there cannot long endure without some change, and stroke of God's correction.
