FURTHER CHANGES IN CRUSTACEAN NOMENCLATURE.
BY HARRIET RICHARDSON.
The
changes innomenclature which
have beenmade by
MissRathbun
* necessitate furtherremarks
in regard to the fate of the isopod generaIdotm
Fabricius 1798and
Ligia Fabricius 1798.It has been pointed out in the paper referred to abovethat IdoteaFabricius 1798 ispreoccupied, Idotea
Weber
17951 having been previously used for a genusof crabs. It appears that in 1796 in the"Index
Alphabeticus"
to the
"
Entomologia
Systematicaemendata
et aucta," Fabriciusmentions
the genus Ichthea S. (p. 86), the letterS
referring to the"
Supple-
men
turn." Idothea here isanomen nudum,
the description of the genus appearingtwo
years laterwith the different spelling Idotea. Idothea in theindex undoubtedly
refers to Idotea in the' 'Supplementum
''and
sisldotheaisthe correct spellingaccord ing to the derivation of the word, itseems more than
likely thatthe omission of the letter hfrom
Idothea in the ' 'Supplementum
''was an
error.Moreover
inthe' 'Index
Alphabeticus'' of the "Supplementum,"
publishedin 1799,we

spelling Idoth

be considered acorrectionofIdatm
in the text. In view of this fact Idothea Fabricius 1799 can be considered the earliestsynonym
of Idotea Fahricius 1798and
the genus can be retained as
an
isopodgenus
with the spelling Idothea Fabricius1799,which
isthendistinctfrom
IdoteaWeber
1795.
LiglaFabricius 1798
must
beabandoned
asagenus
of Isopods, as MissRath bun
has pointed out. I find that the earliestsynonym
isone
quite similar to thegenus
of Fabriciusand
heretofore has been supposed to be a n
omen
nuditm. Ligi/da is suggestedby
Rafincsquet in placeofthe shorter Ligia,and
is equivalent in every respect to thegenus
of Fabricius.The name
Ligi/da Rafinesque 1815may
therefore be used for thepreoccupied Ligia
Weber.
