Research and education about clinical and community practice is very important for building nursing competence in nursing colleagues in an international setting. Along with the vision of Universitas Airlangga to become a world-class university and to rank among the top rankings of the world's universities, the Faculty of Nursing is actively involved in achieving the vision. EFFECTIVENESS OF PROVIDING VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) TOWARDS PRURITUS REDUCTION: STUDY ON PATIENTS WITH
CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASES UNDERGOING HEMODIALYSIS
According to the Indonesian Kidney Registry (2011), the number of CKD patients in Central Java in 2011 is about 51393 cases. Adhyatma, MPH Hospital of Semarang, CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis were ranked fifth of the 10 major chronic diseases. Based on data from patient records in 2013, it was clear that there were 1,084 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis with a prevalence of 14.5%.
Another alternative to solve the problem of itching in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis is the use of herbal ingredients from pure coconut oil or commonly called VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil). VCO is given by rubbing it evenly over the surface of the itchy skin, 3 times every 5 minutes. Giving VCO is done to reduce itch effective performed 3-4 weeks, the researchers took 3 weeks to study and perform providing VCO to the treatment group within a week 3 times, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Results of the analysis of the itch scale before and after the intervention in the experimental group in the hospital Dr. Too high a vitamin level will lead to atrophy of the sebaceous gland and sweat gland, so that the skin becomes dry and itchy (Sherwood, 2001; Akhyani, et .Al, 2005). Moreover, the VCO is effective and safe to use as a skin moisturizer, so it can improve skin hydration and accelerate skin healing (Agero and Verallo 2004).
In addition, VCO can eliminate red spots and itching (Kuncoro, J. & Maloedyn, 2005). Virgin coconut oil (VCO) containing medium chain fatty acids are easily digested and oxidized by the body to prevent the accumulation of toxins in the body. . When the uric acid contained in VCO is in the body, it is converted to monouric, a monoglyceride compound that exhibits antiviral, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and antifungal properties. Therefore, VCO is effective and safe to use as a skin moisturizer in order to improve skin hydration and accelerate skin healing (Agero and Verallo, 2004).
The scale of pruritus experienced by patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy in the treatment group and the comparison group before the intervention given by the percentage scale of pruritus was 80.0%. Scale pruritus experienced by patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy in the treatment group after a given intervention in mild pruritus scale with a percentage of 50.0%. There is a change in itching in the group of patients treated with smeared VCO and the comparison group of patients with smeared lotion when the appearance of itching.
Evident from the p-value at the time before the intervention in the treatment group and the comparison obtained p-value 1.000;. and at post-intervention time in the treatment and comparison group a p-value of 0.000 was obtained. Providing VCO is more effective than giving lotion to patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis at Dr Hospital. Adhyatma, MPH to reduce the severity of pruritus.
