POMP & CIRCUMSTANCE: IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN

T

he attire will be black caps and gowns and the emotions will be glee, excitement and satisfaction when the 17th IUPUI commencement gets under way May 11 at 4 p.m. in the Hoosier Dome. The 74th United States Army Band from Fort Benjamin Harrison will provide the music to commence by and the student procession will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Approximately 3,500 IU and Purdue degrees will be awarded and somewhere in that number will be the 50,000th degree since IUPUI became IUPUI.

A crowd estimated at between 18,000 and 20,000 will observe the ceremonies presided over by IU Vice President Glenn

w.

Irwin, Jr. The state and city will be represented by Gov.

Robert D. Orr and Mayor William H. Hudnut. IU President John

w.

Ryan and Purdue President Steven C. Beering will award the degrees.

Four honorary degrees -- two from each university -- will be awarded. Virginia Dill McCarty, civic leader who was the first woman in U.S. history to be appointed by the

President to serve a full term as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, and John E. Reich, prominent Indianapolis business and insurance leader, will receive doctor of laws degrees from IU. John A. Alexander, outstanding attorney known among Indiana bankers as the "dean of banking law," and Anna Margaret Alexander, long-time community and cultural leader whose service includes the presidency of the Indianapolis Public School board during the tumultuous '70s, will receive doctor of humane letters degrees from Purdue.

Commencement guests should enter the Capitol Avenue gate to the Hoosier Dome; graduates should enter through the ticket office off Capitol Avenue; the entrance for handicapped persons is just south of the ticket office entry.

THREE DOWN, 17 TO GO

The Indiana University Press has published Writings of Charles S. Peirce, Volume 3, 1871-1878, the third of a projected 20-volume set of the

American philosopher's works. The volumes are being compiled by the Peirce Edition Project housed on the fifth floor of Cavanaugh Hall.

Editor is Christian J.W. Kloesel, associate professor of English.

Peirce's contributions to logic, mathematics, psychology, philosophy, astronomy, and other scientific fields made him a leader in intellectual thought in the latter part of the 19th Century. The third volume

contains Peirce's "Photometric Researches," culminating his work in

astronomy; his "Note on the Sensation of Color," which made him the first experimental psychologist in the Americas; and his publications on

statistical and probability theory, establishing him as an important contributor to that developing area of research. The volume also includes his "Illustrations of the Logic of Science."

The first two volumes were published in 1982 and 1984. All three editions contain large sections of previously unpublished material in addition to selected published works, resulting in a monumental

collection of Peirce's works. Collaborating in the effort are Kloesel, Max H. Fisch, Lynn A. Ziegler, Don D. Roberts, Nathan Houser, Aleta Houser, Ursula Niklas and Edward C. Moore.
