30

students enrolled in just one year, a nd freshman enrollments are also at an all-time high.

While all of this should be celebrated, we have to be

concerned about some external issues that have implications for the School of Physical Education. It appears that the economy

may be in a recession and the State of Indiana is making cuts in most of its budget. While those cuts have not yet been forced upon public schools and high r education, it is not out of the realm of possibility.

At a minimum, we are probably facing static budg ts or minimal increases over the next few years.

You will read below in this bulletin about the Campaign for

IUPUI,

a

$700

million fund rais- ing campaign for the Indianapolis campus. If successful, this would be the largest fund drive for a public university in Indiana and would help ameliorate the effects of declining state appropria- tions.

I

hope many of you will participate in this effort.
