Don't believe in Missions!!
S
TOP! Wait! Think a moment! What did you say? You don't believe in For eign Missions? Do you real:~e what that means. It means that you do not belieYe in the Lord's Prayer. Think and see. "THY KINGDoM CoME." It means you do not be- lieve in the Ten Commandments. Listen to our Lord's epitome of them: "THOU SHAL'l' LovE TnY NEIGUBOI~ As TuYSELF." l t means you do not believe in the Golden Rule."WHATSOEVER YE WOULD TIIAT MEN SHOULD DO TO YOU, Do YE EYEN SO'l'O'l'HE~I." It means you do not believe in the Long meter Doxology. "PRAISE lliM ALL CLtEATUHES HEHE BELO>I'." It; means you do not believe in the Sermon on the :Mount. For that match- less discourse pulsa, tes with a foreign mis- siona:-y spirit. It means you do not oelieve in the Great Commission, tl1e marching orders under which you as a soldier of Christ go forth to war, and the fundamental constitution of the Church of God. "Go YE INTO ALL THE 'VORLD AXD l'UEACH 'l'IJ:t: GOSP:t:L TO EVERY CREATURE." It means you do not believe in the Church of God, which you say you lovE better than your own lire. For the church has no reason for its existence except to save the world. Jt means you have not begun to understand the alphabet of that gospel by which yo•l hope yourself to be saved. It
-~.f' •.. • • • • • •• ,•
means you do not believe in the vision that Christ had of the 1uture. For that had in it tile sa,me sweep of world-wide empire. It inea.ns you do not believe in the Bible heaven itself, to which you hope to come. For in that heaven is to be gathered a great multitude which no man can number, of all nations and kindreds and people and ton:rues.
In the name of ali that is holy, if yon do not uelieve in foreign missions, will you tell what there is left for you to believe in? You do not
!mow? Well, I will tell you some ofthe things in which you must believe, if you do not he·
lieYe in carrying the gospel to heat:tc'J.
If yoadc not believe in foreign m:.~.;· 1:1;.
you must believe that Christ died for ouly a part of the human race, a horrible doctrine surrendered by every evangelical Christian to- day. You must believe that God's great con- cern for the heathen's salvation is not genuine,
:ron must believe that Christ did not mean what He said when He commissioned His Church to the end of time to cany the gospel to every creature.
You must believe that the civilization of we Anglo-Saxon race and its glorious subse- quent history, growing dit·ectly out of the work of foreign missionaries from Rome, was a great mistake, and that our forefathers ought to have been left in their original sav- agery in the wilds of Denmark, Saxony and England. You must believe that the apostles who went everywhere preaching Jesus and the resurrection, wasted their energies, and that the sublime self-sacrifices and the glorious ~a-
'ers of the Master's missionaries of the world .ve!'e all a misuse of priceless time and gifts
SOUTHERH IA,PTISl
THEOI.OGICAl SEMINARY l.IBAAAV
You must believe that Jesus Christ the greatest foreign missionary who ever lived, made a use- less journey to th;c; world, when bom of a woman as the hope of mankind, and God's g·ift to the race. You must, bel :eve that God ought to '1ave left tl1e hnman mcein their sins, to drop tinall.l' into the "rotten mouth of hell " Yo'u must believe that the in carnal ion was an er- ror, and the atonement a waste. You must bellcYe th<tt, Gethsemane and Calvary were the monu:. <'nta l blunders of all eternity. Fe 1
they were t 11e suffering-s of the g~·eat Foreign :'IIissionary in a heathen htnd, Jmt to death by those to who:n He went to p:·ca~iL
Are you ready to subscribe to all this? If we believe in foreign missions at all we must be··
lieve in them tremendously.
lJ ere is t:1e Lord's argument for foreign mis sions without one word of human comment.
"Tlle whole world lieth in wickedness.
"There is none other name given under hea1•en.
where they must be saved than the name of Jesus." He that believ.eth shall be saved. How shall they believe on him whom they lm 1·e not hea.rd? How shall they hear without a preach- er'? How shall they preach except they be sent't
'l'o do mission work do not mean to give what you don't want. Give for missions when ev- erything is paid for on the home field. No:
give to the taking of this world for Christ as regular as for any other purpose. To do this we are ~.sking every church·--a whole churcll to give $1.00 per month all the year for Foreign Missions.
