Meeting of December 13, 1938

All members present except Mr. Vonnegut (excused.) The secretary reported that Mr. W. A. ~techer has pre- sented to the College two shares ($200.00) of Camp Brosius participation certificates and was instructed to write Mr.

Stecher a letter o~ thanks.

Preparations for the children's camp were discussed at length and the Board then decided to lirni t the expense for- advertising to $150.00.

The Board instructed the secretary to turn over to Mr. Rap- paport the notes and accounts of a number of former stu- dents who are to be sued for the amounts due.

The selection of Board members to be elected this year by the National Executive Committee of the American Turners was made a special order of business for the next meeting of the Board.

The matter of granting Mr. Steichmann a leave of absence during July and August a¥.J.d the selection of a camp and hotel mamager in his place is also to be taken up later.

The Board appointed Mrs. Clara L. Hester to manage the hotel during Mr. Steichmann's absence, who was granted the desired leave of absence.

The Administrative Board recommended t.hat the honorary de- gree of Mast.er of Physical Education be conferred upon Mrs.

Huster, Mr. Edwin O. Hoppe and Mr. Leopold Zwarg. rrhe sec- retary was instructed to mdil out ballots.

I The Board recommended to the National Executive Committee the re-appointment of the following trustees whose terms expire in June: Mr. George Vonnegut, Mr. Leo M. Rappaport and Mr. Paul Krimmel. According to rules, Dr. Hofmeister

is not eligible for re-appointment as he has served over two terms, and the Board recommended Dr. Otto M. Koenig in his place. The secretary was instructed to explain the mat- ter to Dr. Hofmeister and to thank him for his service as memb0r of the Board and his interest in the College.

The secretary reported that the members of the Board have unanimously voted in favor of conferring the degree of M.

The Administrative Board reported that Mr. Chauncey Lin- hart has been engaged as wrestling instructor in place of Mr. Treichler, and Mr. Wm. Hen e to give a one -semester

hour course in German conversation. Approved.

The Administrative Board further reported that two Sopho- more students, August Anania and Joseph Ciesielski, have

been chosen to act as mess seargeant and dishwasher dur- ing the June crunp. Approved. ,.. - -~-"' :r

Denial of a scholarship to Mr. Vincent Marin1of St. Louis because of ranking below the required 40%, was approved.

The Board instructed the secretary to have a catalog for

1939~40 printed.

The Administrative Board also reported that Sophomore Joseph Weissmueller, Jr., and Freshmen Elizabeth Dunkle and Bruce Whitaker have resigned and that Carroll Gould has re-entered the College while Betty Hoffman and Elfriede Wandrey are new students, the former with rank of Sopho- more and the latter· of Fresbrnan.

The Board approved the arrangement for Miss Ricigliano to take a two-hour course at Indiana University Extension Division as sufficient work can not be offered her at the Colle.ge.

Mr. Schreiber reported that the program for the Children's camp has been printed and will be mailed within a short time.

I\IIr. Steichmann called attention to the cmndition of the

Ford truck at Camp Brosi us and was instructed to ask the garctge man at Elkhart Lake for an estimate of the cost of necessary repairs.

Dr. Sputh reported that the trustees of the Nonnal College Building and Endowment Fund will meet in Indianapolis on March 4.

Dr. Sputh reported the death of a Junior student, William Munz, which occurred in February, due to pneumonia. Upon

recommendation of the Adininist rat i ve Board, the Board de- cided to refund to this student' s father the tuition fee for the second semester as well as the practice teaching fee.

Upon recommendation of the Administrative Board, the Board adopted a rule that no student may be initmated into the fraternity or a sorority until all of his (her) financial obligations toward the College have been met.

Upon i'urther recorr1nenda ti on of the Administrative Board, the de0.ree ot Bo.chelor ot Fl1ysical Education was conferred upon M.c. Otto E. Harz who has completed the requirements.

The secretary was instructed to have three old boats at Camp Brosius re~aired at a cost of approximately $25.QO, and also to have the co.mp truck repaired at a cost of about

~?5.00. He was also instructed to investigate whether a better quality mattress for tlie camp ma~; be purchased at a reasonable price.

The Administrative Board was authorized to engage a tennis and a swiillilling instrµctor for the June camp.

Dr. Sputr1 reported t hat the trustees of the Normal College Buildin6 and Endowment Fund met at Indianapolis on March 4 fo the purpose of organizing and making plans for the solicitation of subscriptions and donations, and that the trustees have appropriated ~2000.00 for current College expenses.

The Administrative Board reported on the awarding of high school schol~rships.

The Administrative Board made the following recommendations Ta deny the request of Elfriede Vandrey for reduction of the tuition fee as no male member of her family belongs to a Tur11verein.

To purchase one dozen steel lockers at $115.29.

To have all matters concerning NYA aid decided by a com- mittee consisting of Mrs. Hester, Mr. Schreiber and £,l[r.

Rinsch.

To enga2Se Mr. Niueller for the course in Advanced German, and Vlrs. J!'ischer for the courses in Beginners and Inter- mediate German.

~he Board of Trustees concurred in these recommendations.

Mr. Theo. Bissing, a/graduate of the Nor.n.al School, asked for a copy of his diploma which V\6.S Jestroyed in a fire.

Mr. Koster offered to make a diploma for hirn.

The Board directed Mhe secretary to write a letter of thanks to Mr. Rappaport for the gift of $100.00 to Camp Brosius as well as for the gift of a boat last year and the many other t hings he bas done for the camp.

r1'he question of salary for _Jirs. Hester and Mr. Schreiber for their summer work, was turned over to a committee con- sisting of Mr. KurttL, Mr. Rappaport and llilr. Sputh.

nr. Sputh tendered his resignation as president of the College, effective September 1, 1940. It was laid over un- til later.

It led to a discussion of the financial situation of the College and the secretary was directed to write to the National Executive Committee of the .American Turners and

to call attention to the arnount due from the Committee, to the slow progress of the Fund campaign, and to the need of financial aid.

The secretary was further instructed to suggest to the National Executive Committee tiiat t he convention of the Amer ican Turners be held at Camp Brosius on June 29 and 30 and July 1.

The secretary reported that since the last meeting, addit- ional $1000.00 was received from the Fund Committee.

The Administrative Board recommended that the degree of Bachelor of Physical Education be conferred upon Ruth E.

Bach.11an und Arpad L.1viasley. Approved.

The Board concurred in the recommendation of the Adminis- trative Board to schedule Home-Coming for Hovember 23-25. Dr. Sputh reported t hat this year's class consists of 35

Juniors, 29 Sophomores and 28 Fresh.~en; total, 92.

The secretary was instructed to write a letter of thanks to ivir . Oscar H. Koster for the work he did on the diploma for Mr . Bissing.

On motion of Dr. Sputh, seconded by i'11r . Kurtz, the Board appropriated $100.00 for 1.aying Mrs. Hester tffor her work at hotel Camp Brosius, and also ~?100.00 additional salary for Mr . Schreiber, director of the child~en' s camp.

On motion of Mr . Rappaport, seconded by ~r. Kurtz, the Board called a neeting with the National Executive Commit- tee of the American Turners and the Trustees of the Normal Collee;e Building and .c;ndowment Fund for Friday evening,

Nove~ber 24. The Board also decided to invite the non- resident members on the same basis as previously; thatis, paying traveling, but not hotel expenses.

Mr ._ Schreiber submitted a report on the operation of the

children's caillp and suggestions for improvements next year.

The Board ordered copies of this report sent to all mem- bers and decided to Jay its discussion over until another meeting.

The committee which is to arran6e the national convention of the lLnerican Turners at Camp Brosius, was directed t o get information regarding a permit for the sale of beer,et c, The Board decided to erect a fire escape on the Annex at Camp Brosius, in conforinity with a recommendation of the

Visconsin hotel inspector.

The Board also discussed Mr . Schreiber' s report on the Children' s Camp without taking action.

Upon reco.nmendation of the Administi·ative Board, the degree of Bacgelor of Physical Education was awarded to Robert E.

Pegel who has completed the requirements.
