CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Problem

The education curriculum in Indonesia has changed many times for the needs of students and the society. Nowadays, Indonesia runs the current curriculum namely 2013 curriculum or Kurikulum 2013 (K-13). This curriculum has been applied in almost all schools ranging from Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools throughout Indonesia. This curriculum implied the importance of four aspects, namely knowledge, skills, attitude, and behavior. This 2013 curriculum emphasizes on the students active learning. In order to achieve this, the government mandated the new approach called scientific approach.

With the scientific approach, the government expects that the learners will be able to develop their critical thinking and apply the scientific method in solving any problems of life. According to the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 81A/2013 Attachment IV, scientific approach is expected to be able to increase students' motivation and activeness in the learning process because this approach is a focused-on-student approach which aims to develop students’ affective skill, cognitive skill, as well as performative skill. This approach has five stages in whilst-activity; they are (1) observing, (2) questioning, (3) collecting information, (4) associating, and (5) communicating.

With such critical thinking and problem solving skills the students are expected to be able to face the real life challenges.

In order that the students can actively develop their potentials, teachers are demanded to be able to apply scientific approach properly. Meanwhile, according to the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 65 in 2013, scientific approach should be implemented in the teaching and learning activity. It means that scientific approach should be applied in all subjects including English subject. We know that English is the international language and has become the most important language to people in many parts of the world so that English subject plays important role to face the globalization era.

Nowadays, English is a compulsory subject for secondary and higher level education.

Related with English Language Teaching, there are many problems that are often faced by teachers in the teaching process. One of the problems faced by the majority of English teachers at this time is from the students, those are students' lack of motivation and interest in English subjects. To overcome these problems, the English teachers should have a good strategy in apply scientific approach that can increase motivation as well as students' abilities and learning outcomes.

The application of this scientific approach continues to grow until this time.

On this occasion, the author will observe English teachers in one of a public schools, namely SMK N 2 Purwokerto. This school is located at Jenderal Gatot Subroto Street Number 81 Kranji, East Purwokerto District, Banyumas Regency,

This school has implemented K-13 from its initial enactment from 2013.

Therefore, the author will do a study about the implementation of scientific approach by the English teachers in the process of learning English in their classroom including the planning, the process, and the result.

B. Reasons of Choosing Topic

Based on the background of problem, the researcher has two reasons of choosing the topic. The first reason, the researcher is a student of English Education Department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto that interested in English education field and wants to advance education in Indonesia. And the second, the researcher has experience as student who are taught using scientific approach at the beginning of the implementation of K13 where at that time the K13 was still difficult to be implemented because of the lack of existing facilities and teachers who were not ready, therefore the researcher wanted know how the development of the implementation of the scientific approach at this time and whether it is already in line with government expectations or not.

C. Statement of Problem

Based on the background of problem, the problems of the study are as follows:

1. How do the English teachers apply the five stages of scientific approach in SMK N 2 Purwokerto?

2. What learning model do the English teachers use in applying the scientific approach in SMK N 2 Purwokerto?

D. Objective of the Study

Based on the research statement, this particular study aimed at finding out:

1. To know how do the English teachers apply the five stages of scientific approach in SMK N 2 Purwokerto.

2. To know the learning model do the English teachers use in applying the scientific approach in SMK N 2 Purwokerto.

E. Significance of the Study

The result of the study is expected to be used theoretically and practically:

1. Theoretically

a. The result of this research can be used as reference for implementing scientific approach in English Language Teaching to senior high school students.

b. The result of this research will be useful to the readers who are interested in analyzing implementation of scientific approach in English Language Teaching to senior high school students.

2. Practically

a. For the Researcher

The result of this research can be used as one of the ways to develop the researcher's knowledge and experience.

b. For the Reader

The reader will get more information and knowledge of the teaching English by using scientific approach to the senior high school students.

F. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study was conducted at SMK N 2 Purwokerto, Banyumas. The subject of the study is the teachers of English at SMK N 2 Purwokerto and focuses on the implementation of the scientific approach in K-13.. The researcher decided to limit the implementation of scientific approach in English instruction at SMK N 2 Purwokerto that covered by describe: the planning that consists steps of scientific approach; the implementation of observing, questioning, collecting information, associating, and communicating; and the effect of the implementation of scientific approach towards students to improve learning achievement in English Language Teaching.

G. Definition of Key Terms

This study uses some technical terms that need to be defined to avoid misunderstanding for the readers. To avoid misunderstanding, they need to be defined as follows:

1. Implementation: It is the action that must follow any preliminary thinking order for something which actually happens. In this research, implementation is a set of activities to plan and perform the scientific approach into the learning and teaching activity in the school.

2. Scientific Approach: It is a student centered approach in which the teachers only become facilitator or moderator to facilitate the students in get learning activity. This approach consists of five aspect, they are observing, questioning, collecting information, associating and communicating.

3. 2013 Curriculum: It is a set of a teaching program and instructions, which is designed by the Ministry of Educational and Culture in 2013, to develop the educational system, and implemented by the all of the national school in Indonesia.

4. English Language Teaching: It is an activity how teacher conduct English teaching.
