DANCE FOR EARLY
CHILDHOOD
 Dance is basic to learn
Children learn most readily from experience.
“Action is the test of comprehension”
(Dewey, 1915).
To learn by “doing” and to act on knowledge is the basis of kinesthetic learning.
Kinesthetic learning is becoming more widely understood through the work (Piaget; Gardner & and other cognitive theorists
Dance in educational
philosophy
Dance, what’s it good For?
● Dance has became a very relevant in pop culture
● An increase of parents putting their children into dance training
● The national Educational Dance Organization (NEDO), lists factors in depth of how dance helps early Childhood Development (ECD)Improved Physical

BILATERAL INTEGRATION01. Spatial awareness
how to control themselves in different spaces and to shape their bodies
intentionally
an essential part of learning from an emotional control viewpoint and for muscular control and development
This is important for everyday activities like walking on and off a sidewalk,
stepping onto an escalator or even sitting at a table.
to estimate distances and knowing the results of acceleration and deceleration in relationship to objects in the space.
02.Sensorimotoric synchronization
how to control themselves in different spaces and to shape their bodies intentionally
important in many sports and has been shown to influence children’s language and literacy development
Children with developmental dyslexia show an inability to coordinate perception and action.
The relationship between the ability to synchronize body and beat and reading and phonological awareness in
children is unclear.
However, new research does support the use of drumming and other rhythmic, musical intervention in the
development of language function (Serrallach et al, 2016)
03. balance
Research shows that a child’s balance is not fully developed until 12 years old and that
doing activities to promote and improve balance can improve attention and learning skills
needs to be developed for the broad range of body
movements necessary for learning
04. Fast response to sound
Fast movement to music stimulus helps children to accurate process sensory stimulation in the
environment
It prepares the body for quick and appropriate responses to movement
Because sound is one of the most complex functions of body
05. Bilateral Integration
occurs when using large more general movements that cross the midline of the
body
coordination is critical for many activities
the effect it has on children’s abilities to understand
narratives, express themselves and to concentrate in class
Humans are naturally creative, musical and artistic
A baby in the womb lives to the rhythm of its mother’s heartbeat. It hears and feels the sound and emotion of its mother’s voice
When a baby is born, it creates its first sound with its first instrument – the voice
As children, voice and other instruments important to express feelings, learning functions (pattern, pulse, rhyme and structure, without the complication of language; they teach us the way humans bond and express emotion; they give us pleasure and encourage imagination and story-telling
Why song and dance are
essential for ECD?
SINGING SUPRISING
BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN
1. Singing is also an aerobic exercise that improves the efficiency of the cardio-vascular system, increasing the oxygenation of the blood and improving alertness.2. It is linked to stress reduction, longevity and general health. Improving airflow in the upper respiratory tract impedes the bacteria that can cause colds and flu.
3. Children can express their feelings of joy or excitement, of being scared or proud.
4. Musical activity involves many different parts of the brain, so singing (which involves music and language)
when do you start dancing as a child?
● Skipping, jumping, turning, and bare work all help develop
important movement skills and major muscle groups
● Children usually start dance
lessons as soon as they are potty trained, which is roughly 18 – 31 months of age
when children start to dance?
We must remember that children develop at different rates.
Reputable schools will not usually take little ones for ballet or tap until they are three or four years old.
 All instruction in dance forms
such as ballet, tap and jazz
should directly relate to the
children physical development]
How to teach dance to children?
1. Don’t Expect to Teach them to Dance
2. Transition Quickly from One Activity to the Next
3. Have a Thorough Lesson Plan but be prepared to Toss it All Out the Window
4. Don’t Try to Be Their Friend
5. Don’t Fall Into the Scapegoat
Trap

6. The First Encounter Sets The Tone
7. Have a lot of Tricks in Your Bag 8. Don’t Make It Too Hard – or
Too Easy
9. Use the Space

Important standards for dance in Early childhood
Provide a scaffold outlining the breadth and scope of learning and teaching dance as an art upon which to design curricula and course syllabi
Serve as a springboard for creativity for the learning and teaching of dance making:
improvisation, choreography, and composition
 Define age-appropriate expectations and
levels of achievement in the art of dance
Lets watch this video
basic dance moves for kids
the simple movements of day-to-day life leads to their refinement and the development of intricate steps.
The different moves which can be taught to children in the beginning include hopping, marching, skipping, spinning, galloping, etc
For example, a Bunny Hop can be performed by jumping back and forth.
Similarly, an Electric Slide is performed by sliding from side-to-side.
Various directional movements can be taught to kids and which include Eensy Weensy Spider, Hokey Pokey, etc
fun dance moves
Easy and innovative dance moves should be used for beginners to understand them easily
One such fun step is the Shopping Cart move. In this dance step, kids mime the action of pushing an imaginary cart and putting stuff into it. This dance step can be performed by two people with one of them pushing the cart and other putting things into it
Chicken dance, left and right movements
Mastering the basic moves should prepare kids for the advanced and complex steps of different dance forms
Children experience in dance
Studies show that child’s dance experience involves qualities associated with artistic practice including:
 sensory awareness,
 spatial focus,
 personal stylistic preferences,
 imagination, intellectual engagement,
 commitment to practice and performance,
 self-discipline, and
 form-making abilities
Children’s creative process in dance
Children creating movement through improvisation on a number of occasions such as:
 Keeps hands close to chest.
 Demonstrates small footwork.
 Gets down on floor.
Jumps and then twists – stops.
Swing arms and knees to music.
Crouches down with hands on thighs while counting.
 Second position jump
Another creative process in dance
Turn and Twist
Left and right
It is a simple dance move that allows a better
coordination between hands and legs
In this move, you have to twist your body below the waist
