1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses about the introduction to the research introduction.

The introduction explains about the background of study, problem of study, the purpose of study, scope of study and operational definition.

1.1The Background of the Study

One of the important skills that is very important to be taught and learnt in the school is reading. Alyousef (2005: 2) states that reading can be seen as an interactive process between a reader and a text which leads to automaticity or reading fluency. It means that reading is a process of understanding the meaning of a text in which the readers can get important ideas and information of what they have read. In addition Dechant, (2011: 88) mentions that reading is also known as a perceptual process which means reading occurs only when the reader understands what the symbol represents It means the readers can interpret the printed symbol by bringing the meaning to it which depends on the readers’ experience, culture, emotional, and ability to reconstruct their experiences or background knowledge. Students can comprehend the text because of the interconnection between the readers’ background

knowledge and the new knowledge of the text that the readers read.

In reading skill, the students have to comprehend the questions based on the text. There are some questions related to aspects of reading such as main idea, inferring, vocabulary and detail information. Mikulecky and Jeffries (2006:150) say there are some important aspects in reading to be comprehended by the reader. They

are: (1) main idea, (2) inference, (3) detail, (4) vocabulary. The students who can not understand well those aspects, absolutely they can not answer the questions based on the reading.

Based on the preliminary study during PPL on August conducted by the writer in class 2A SMPN 1 Baitussalam Aceh Besar which consisted of 30 students, she found that the students’ average score on reading ability is 50. The highest score (95) only achieved by 6 students and the lowest score (20) obtained by 15 students.

The test results showed that most students got difficulties in answering questions related to some aspects of reading comprehension, such as finding the main idea, identifying details information, interpreting the meanings of words and making inferences.

In this study, the writer applied picture in teaching reading to help the students in learning it. This technique can be a good media in teaching learning process. Picture will help the students in understanding the situation and memorizing the words. Actually, when the teacher used picture as their media in teaching they have activated two from five senses, they are eyes and ears. The eyes are used to see the picture, meanwhile the ear to hear the story of the text.

Teaching reading by using picture would give an easy way to the students to remember what they have been studied. It is supported by Kinder (2013:34) who said that picture helps the students to get the idea in learning material. Besides, it can be used to remind the students to the real life, real experience, and real situation. Using picture is one of the effective methodologies in learning reading. It caused by picture

can be used successfully to show the meaning of words and sentence successfully.

The students have much idea when they look at the picture.

In this study, the teacher gives some pictures related to the material. For example, the teacher gives the picture related to plants, animals and etc. Then, she asks the students to mention the things than can be described based on them. Then, she guides them to read the text related to the pictures and comprehend the meaning in the text.

Therefore, the writer chooses picture to teach the students in order to solve the students’ problem in learning reading. In this study, the writer chose picture as a

part of visual aid. Brown (2012:39) argues that picture is an image, or likeness of an object, person, or scene produce on a flat surface, especially by painting, giveing or photography. It is not just an aspect of method but through its representation of place, object, and people.

Based on the statement above the writer is inspired to conduct a research on on teaching reading by using picture forn her thesis by tittle “Improving Students’

Reading Skill through Picture at SMPN 1 Baitussalam Class 2A Aceh Besar”.

1.2 The Problems of the Study

Based on the background of the study, the writer formulated the problem in this study as follow: “Does picture improve the students’ reading ability at SMPN 1 Baitussalam Class 2A Aceh Besar?

4 1.3 The Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to figure out whether the use of picture improves the students’ ability in mastering reading skill at SMPN 1 Baitussalam Class 2A Aceh Besar.

1.4 The Scope of the Study

Since, there are many skills of English which taught at school, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the writer has specified the scope of this study on reading skill. The writer will teach it by using picture.

1.5 Operational Definition

To make the topic clear, it is necessary to explain some terms to avoid misunderstanding. The terms are reading and picture.

a. Reading

According to Hatch (2001:20) reading is as an interactive process between a reader and a text which leads to automaticity or reading fluency. It means that reading is a process of understanding the meaning of a text in which the readers can get important ideas and information of what they have read. Therefore, the goal of a reader is to understand the meaning of the text.

b. Picture

Picture is charts, visual aids or images that help to make a point or enhance a presentation. An example of pictures are bar graphs and pie charts that are used to illustrate percentages of products sold and the change in sales over time. According

to David (2007:20) picture is not just an aspect of method but through its representation of place, object, and people, it is essential part of the overall experiences. Pictures are kinds of visual instruction materials might be used more effectively to develop and sustain motivation in producing positive attitudes. In this study, the write selected the picture of plants and animals.
