We want the shoes off of your feet!
The Alfred Navajo Water Project is collecting shoes for our fundraising drive. $1000 will be donated to our fund drive if we collect 2500 pairs of new or gently used shoes, sandals, boots, flipflops, whatever by the end of the semester. Collection boxes can be found at Alfred Pharmacy, Alfred Community Bank, Alfred Steuben Trust, Kimberleys hair salon, The Union University Church center in Alfred, the Powell Campus Center, and the Leadership center already. We will also put boxes out in some of the academic buildings....want a box in your area? Let us know! You know you have shoes in your closet you don't wear! The shoes, ultimately, go to less developed countries such as Haiti and Honduras.
Help us meet our goal of 2500 pairs. Ask your friends, family, relatives, strangers on the street for their unwanted shoes!

Shoe drive for charity!
The Navajo Water Project, an initiative to raise funds to install clean, running water systems in homes on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico, will be sponsoring a shoe drive. Why shoes, you ask? An organization that sends shoes to countries such as Haiti and Honduras will contribute $1000 to our fund-raising drive if we collect 2500 pairs of shoes by Dec. 22. The shoes must be wearable....they can be used or new, but must be wearable. Sandals, sneakers, even flip flops, are all ok to donate!
Collection boxes will be placed at the following locations: Powell Campus Center (in the hallway toward the mailroom), Alfred Pharmacy, Community Bank in Alfred, Steuben Trust in Alfred, Kimberly's Hair Salon, and the Union University Church center, and possibly some more locations on campus. So take this opportunity to clean out your closet and donate your shoes for a good cause. Also, a donation of shoes will get you into the last home AU varsity football game on Nov 3 for free. So bring a pair of shoes to the game and get the ticket price waived! Any questions, email Michele Hluchy at

AU Chorus with a Common Ground Theme
The AU Chorus is open to all students regardless of musical background. If you can sing, we want you and we will teach you! In the spring semester, the choir will focus on music that celebrates diversity, acceptance and hope. We will be working on "Glory" from the movie "Selma" and alumni Chaz Bruce will come from Rochester to help us sing Gospel and R & B music. We will perform 2-3 selections from a new work "Considering Matthew Shepard" a piece about the tragic death of a young gay man but also focusses on hope for our future. We'll celebrate our Latino community in a Caribbean based
"Kyrie" with steel drums and multiple percussion.
Concerned about issues of diversity, inclusion and community? Let's sing about it and through our songs truly become community.
University Chorus is a 2 credit course MUSC 271 and satisfies part of the Arts credit in General Education. The choir meets on Monday from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm and Wednesday 5:20 pm - 6:50 pm.
The group is also open to faculty and community members.
Singing in a choir has been shown to relieve stress and help people to find a community.

Monthly Safety Tip
Cold weather, ice and snow can increase the chances of slips and falls, so the Alfred University safety committee would like to remind all Saxons to stay safe throughout this winter season. We remind you to dress warmly and wear suitable attire, and, when appropriate, walk like a penguin. It may sound silly, but short, shuffled steps can decrease your chances of slipping and falling. Be sure to download a copy of our Walk Like A Penguin poster to post in your area.

Human Library Project Alfred Edition (Informational Meeting) When: Tuesday, November 27 from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Where: Scholes Library Seminar Room (2nd Floor)
Come learn how to be a part of an exciting new and highly interactive project just getting started here at Alfred University. This initial informational meeting is to recruit volunteers, participants, and plan out some of the basic logistics for the AU Human Library Project session planned to take place during MLK week in January. Brian Saltsman, Samantha Dannick, and Laurie Lounsberry McFadden will present and facilitate a conversation about the idea and program, answer questions, and assist participants and those interested in participating in the event.
The Human Library Project is an international initiative which opens the opportunity for participants to interact and "check-out" human books or volunteers whom share their experiences with identity characteristics which are both illuminating and timely. The Alfred University version will highlight community member volunteers who will share their insights and life experiences, stories, and musings to both entertain and to educate. There are opportunities for anyone regardless of their identity or standing in the community to volunteer to be a "human book". This is meant to be the first of several
"reading sessions" to take place during the spring semester. "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover"
