The thesis examines the types and levels of code mixing in the book Uncommon Way by Jovi Adhiguna. This within the research titled "An Analysis Of Code Mixing In Uncommon Way Book by Jovi Adhiguna" could end successfully.

Background of study

It is revealed that there are some types of code mix used in Jovi Adhiguna's Uncommon Way Book. The researcher is really a motivation to conduct a study titled "An Analysis of Using Code Mixing in Uncommon Way Book by Jovi Adhiguna".

Focus of The Study

In this study, the researcher will analyze only chapters one, two and three and then focus on some aspects of code mixing, especially regarding the types and levels of code mixing in the book "The Uncommon Way" by Jovi Adhiguna . The researcher is interested in analyzing the process of code mixing in the use of English language in Indonesian language by the character of the book.

Research question

Objectives and Benefits of Study

The result of this study can be a reference for students and other researchers who are interested in analyzing and developing studies on code mixing.

Prior Research

To make the research of code mixing more diverse, the researcher discusses not only the types of code mix used, but also the levels of code mix described in this Uncommon Way book. In previous studies, the researchers analyzed the mixing of codes in Indonesian with regional or foreign languages, while in this study researchers will only focus on the mixing of codes in Indonesian-English sentences in Jovi Adhiguna's Uncommon Way Book.

Sociolinguistics

Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society, that is, explaining why we speak differently in different social contexts with regard to the social function of language and the way it is conveyed4. Trudgill explains that sociolinguistics is part of linguistics that deals with language as a social and cultural phenomenon.5 It describes the field of language and communities closely related to sciences, especially social psychology, anthropology, geography, and human sociology.

To complete the data analysis technique in this study, the researcher used content analysis of the data. A code mixing sentence from the book Uncommon Way will be analyzed. Its goal is to discover the entire contents of the book Uncommon Way and analyze sentences that contain code-mixing.

The researcher collected sentence data that was incorporated into the code mix from the Uncommon Way book. After reading the whole book, the researcher started collecting sentences with English-Indonesian code mixing. These codes may represent the types and levels of mixing code found in the unusual book.

Findings

Code mixing is more than just the use of language where speakers or writers mix two or more codes in discourse. This means that code mixing occurs when sharing from one foreign language that the speaker uses in the main language. In the code-mixing type, the researcher uses Musyken's theory, which is divided into three, namely: insertion, alternation and coherent lexicalization.

Discussion

Based on the table above, it can be concluded that the most common type of code mix found in Uncommon Way books is code mix insertion type, i.e. 90.98%. The second dominant type is the alternation type, where there are several English words inserted by the author that are given affixes in a sentence. From the table above, it can be concluded that the highest level of code mix found in the Uncommon Way book is code mix word level, which is a whopping 48.36%.

The third dominant level is the phrase level, where there are several phrases inserted by the author in one sentence. In this study, the researchers contributed to a sociolinguistics course which discussed one of its sub-chapters, namely code mixing. It is hoped that after reading this research, it can provide additional insights for students studying sociolinguistics, especially code mixing.
