On June 1, 1925, by act of the Legislature, Indiana College was purchased by the state and became the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Indiana University Medical Center consists of the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, Robert W. The school is a member of the American Association of Dental Schools and is governed by its rules and the rules of the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.

Because there is a close relationship between the School of Dentistry and the rest of the University, and because the practice of dentistry and the various branches of research related to it are based on virtually the same fundamental sciences as the practice of medicine, it has been seen advisable to provide facilities for training in basic sciences in regularly established departments of the University for this purpose.
