Graduate and Professional Policies
Before enrolling in nursing courses, faculty expect nursing students to be proficient enough with computers to log on to the Internet and access course content. Students must also be able to log into an email account to communicate with other students and teachers, and to use a word processing program.
Professional and Technical Standards
Students should also be able to search for nursing-related material and to return to an interesting website whenever they want by using bookmarks or a word processor to save Internet location addresses. These CDs include software to connect to the IUPUI network, Netscape Communicator to use as a world wide web browser, and a virus checker.
Academic Standing & Progression
Students who fail to meet these essential skills at any point in their academic program, as determined by faculty, may have their progress paused until they have demonstrated the ability to meet these essential skills within a negotiated time frame.
BSN Degree Requirements
Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours with a grade of C or higher in each didactic course and an S (Satisfactory) in all clinical/practical courses required for the degree. BSN Accelerated Second Degree Track
Credits from successfully repeated courses may be used only once toward the total number of credit hours required for the BSN degree. Complete at least 30 credit hours of required nursing majors on the IU campus where the BSN degree is awarded.
BSN Admission Requirements
Accelerated Second Degree Track
Students who meet the above admission criteria and apply for a specific admission cycle will be admitted based on previous academic performance and strength of goal setting in pool of applicants. Students who do not enter that particular admission cycle may re-apply for admission to a subsequent admission cycle.
Traditional Pre-Licensure Track
Students are admitted to the Accelerated BSN Mobility Cycle for a specific admission cycle and are expected to enter that cycle. If admission is denied, the applicant may reapply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in a subsequent semester if eligibility is maintained. Students are admitted to the baccalaureate nursing program for a specific semester and are expected to enter the program that semester.
Core Campus applicants will receive priority for admission if they complete the majority (51 percent) of their prerequisite general education coursework at the IUPUI or IU Bloomington campus.
BSN Honors Study Option
As part of the application process, the applicant must submit a Student Crime Disclosure Form to report any issues that would be documented on a national criminal background check. Students are not eligible for further admission if they have rejected an offer of admission twice. If additional spaces are available, next priority will be given to students who have completed the majority of their course work on another IU campus.
Students who transfer the majority of prior coursework from a non-IU school are assigned the lowest priority for admission.

Applicants who do not meet one or more of the above criteria may request special consideration by the campus admissions, progress and grading committee (APG) to which admission is requested. Consult campus policies and practices to determine the appropriate process to follow at the campus you wish to attend.

In order to achieve this goal, we have developed three majors within BSN that meet the needs of different students. Faculty in the BSN program also recognize that learning involves domains of knowledge, skills, and emotions. The faculty has designed each BSN major to offer a superior, evidence-based curriculum to prepare students for careers as professional nurses who are competent providers of care, prepared to perform the full capacity of the professional nurse role in a variety of settings and situations.
The graduate from the BSN program possesses a broad knowledge of the humanities, biological and social sciences and nursing.
RN-MSN Mobility Option
In each major of the BSN course, the work focuses on the mastery of conceptual knowledge; demonstration of competence in the nine target areas of the program; and the embodiment of exemplary professionalism that includes the values inherent in the profession. The individual who embodies the professional identity of the nurse and who translates the inherent values of the nursing profession into the ethical and legal practice of nursing. A competent care provider who is prepared to fulfill the role of a professional nurse in a variety of health care settings.

MSN Admissions
Two years of relevant clinical nursing experience as a licensed registered nurse may be required for nurse applicants. The mobility option allows registered nurses to earn a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) without awarding a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Please note that this option may not be the best option for all registered nurses, so it is important to speak with the School of Nursing academic advisor early in the decision-making process.
Deferment may be granted by written request, subject to adjustment of admission status to the requirements of the new registration period.
PhD Admissions
Two years of relevant clinical nursing experience as a licensed RN is required for all RN-MSN applicants. Admission of Students on Academic Probation Students with an undergraduate GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted on academic probation upon the recommendation of the academic department in which they wish to major and with the approval of the MSN Curriculum and Student Affairs Committee. Maintaining active admission status is only valid for the registration period specified in the admission letter.
Applications and transcripts are only kept for two years; after this period a new application is required.
Nursing Informatics
Teaching in Nursing
If students can document appropriate graduate work at another institution, they may request a transfer of a maximum of 3 credits. The maximum time to complete the program is four years without major breaks (ie more than two semesters) between courses. This field and its underlying technology are changing too quickly for long breaks.). The number of credit hours completed prior to admission to the certificate program that may count toward degree completion.
There is no limit to the number of graduate courses that may be completed prior to admission to the certificate program, provided that all course work is completed within a four-year period.
Certificate Programs
Master of Science in Nursing
3 credits each in Nursing Theory, Nursing Management for Advanced Nursing and Research Methodology for a total of 9 credits. Complete all degree requirements within six years of the date the student begins work. The School of Nursing is not responsible for certifying the degree if the student does not submit an application.
Post-master's opportunities are available in all clinical areas and in nursing administration and teacher education.
PhD in Nursing Science Program
Students who do not regain good academic standing after three semesters of probation will be dismissed from the program. Students who do not register for a period of three consecutive semesters will be dismissed from the program. Students who receive a failing course grade in a non-clinical course will be placed on academic probation and monitored by the MSN Curriculum and Student Affairs Committee.
Students who receive a failing grade in a clinical course or in more than one course (clinical and/or didactic) within the same semester will be dismissed from the program.
