Agnew costs taxpayers

We may have seen the last oI Spiro A n e w in government life but w e certainly haven't slopped paying (or lum Since October 10. the ousted V P has been receiving over 1100.000 worth of free mailing privileges, bodyguards, office space, and 10 assistants AU provided the specific requests of one President Richard Milhous Nixon

If this keeps up. we will soon be paying more money protecting him as a felon than the money got from us in taxes the first time around

The American taxpayers were wronged by Mr Agnew's actions once before Now we sre forced to pay for his actions again Offhand, it s rather difficult to think of any other felons who have rated such red- carpet treatment And from the President, yet!

Cheaper to keep him? Maybe

By RICHARD YURKO No one needs to tell a student

For example ui o ' ^ r t o be admitted to the College, an a p p l i c a n t m u s t t a k e t h e Scholastic Aptitude Test (SATl and several Achievement Tests, all developed by Educational Testing Service <ETS) for the College Entrance Examination Board <CEEB>

Furthermore once a student has been admitted to Dartmouth there are several Achievement Tests which the College uses as placement examinations

Admissions testing is by no means cantoned to the transition from s e c o n d ar y school to college

Nearly three quarters to each

C hinting class bare takes at t one to the ETS admission tests, such as the Graduate Record S ia m <GRE). the Law School Admission Teat (LSATi.

or tbe Admission T est for Graduate Study in Business fATGSB)

Although ETS is certainly not the only organisation devoted to tb e d e v e l o p m e n t of s a c k standardised adm issions and achievement tests it to by far tbe largest The one major test which Is familiar to m ost students but not administered by ETS is tbe Medical College Admissions Teat (MCATl.

Tbe Prtaretaa Office T b e s c e n e a t t b e E T S Princeton office is a difficult one to classify.

On tbe one hand it has a d i s t i n c t l y c o l l e g e l i k e atmosphere and setting Nestled ui the partially wooded over 300 acre area owned by ETS are six several story office buildings a small library and a recently constructed conference center

A u t o m a t i c a l l y tbe t e r m campus" comes to mind in speaking to these offices where the bulk to the 3000 permanent ETS employees work

Y However the atmosphere within the buildings does not always match the tranquility to the campus For instance in the building whi ch h ous es tbe computer center there are millions to snswer sheets to be scored scores to be scaled and score reports to be processed and mailed Last year alone, over 1 • million students took the SAT

So, if in one s ens e. ETS resembles s college campus It

•Iso is very much a big business with incom e of al mos t 141 million last year

Thu dual character to ETS — a combination to academia and business - was present from its c r e a t i o n a s a non p r o f i t corporation in December IM7.

The corporation was created by tb e A m e r i c a n C o u n c i l on Education the College Entrance Examination Board and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement to Teaching in order to uni te tbe t e s t i n g functions to the three groups

Under its charter ETS can engage la. undertake and carry oa sen n ets research and other activities in the field to educational testing and other suck a c t i v i t i e s as may be appropriate to such purpose '

In the past IS years, however tb e e m p h a s i s at ETS has changed significantly aad to no longer tbe small testing agency

By sl ow d e g r e e s * said Wi lliam W Turnbull the President to ETS "we have turned around from being a testing agency working in the field to education to being an agency interested in educational problems and interested in bringing to bear on t hos e problems a variety to resources t h a t w e c a n m a r s h a l or identify **

In recent years there has been a sharp increase in the amount to research conducted by ETS / Last year the agency conducted

about M million of educational research in a Urge part funded by government and foundation g r a n t s a n d c o m p l e t e l y independent of the testing programs

For example for the U s ^ v e years ETS has investigated the cognitive development to the child through the creation to an I nfant L a b o r a t o r y at i t s Princeton campus

Yet the major business of ETS is s t i l l the l a r g e t e s t i n g programs and analyses of a student s financial need Well over seventy per cent to the corporation s income tost year came from the administration of these services for the College Board the Graduate Business A d m i s s i o n s C o u n c i l , t he Graduate Record Examinations Board and the Law School Admissions Council

Tbe retotion between ETS and the vin ou s boards and councils to sometimes a difficult one to understand ETS has its own independent Board to Trustees c o m p o s e d of w e l l known e d u c a t o r s f r o m v a r i o u s educational institutions and foundations These trustees said Turnbull determine overall ETS policies with respect to such things as confidentiality to teat scores That is. something the organisation has to have its own policy about "

Eor some mason, many people today say that It is fun and exciting to go to a bar and drink They feel they have friends there, but I can not help but be skeptical of friendships made in a bar I agree with the fcdaa that peopkThave to get away from their problems every once in a while, but it bothers me when so many people who go dnnking, do not admit that they go to get drunk or happy " They ralionalu* their drinking as being fun or exciting

What can be exciting about going to a bar and drinkiiu* The only exciting thing I can remember even remotely associated with bare were the thoughts I had in high school about bow exciting U would be to go into a bar. but I think the excitement from those thoughts had to do with the psychology of forbidden fruit It could be exciting if a fight broke out while you were at the bar. but fights are exciting only when they start, after that, they are sick

It can be fun to go out with friends sod drink, but I personally never feel I have done anything other than getting dizzy Some people say that the fun is in the dnnking or in getting drunk, but I do not see bow

Others claim that their friends are at the bars To stray for a moment, assuming that the only people who go to a bar are those people either with friends oi' there to get away The people who are there with their friends are not going to be making friends with the people who are there to drown their sorrows This means that the only people to make friends with at a bar are thoee people getting away from their problems If they are looking for a shoulder to cry on and you are. looking for a shoulder to cry on. that Is someone to tell your woes to. then neither one of you will find s friend because you both will be looking for friendship and neither one will be giving it. So it is very hard to find a friend at a bar If you admit that you really are not looking for a friend, but Just someone to tell your story to. then you are dome what you should be. admitting that you drink to get away

But what about all you people who keep saying it is fun to drink*

Don't you have enough problems the way It is without kidding yourself about why you drink*

All you tube lovere may have more to fear next season than ju s t the rad iatio n I never intended to delve into my personal Ufe. but since this will affect so many, I felt obliged to forsake my policies

I have a boyfriend whose emotions, at the present, border somewhere between the heights of ecstacy and the depths of awe For two weeks ago. this tall, sexy, but otherwise Mr. Average American was dredged from the r a n k s o f a n o n y m i t y to p articipate in *t£e television rating game This was ooe of the g re a t m om ents in h it life, second only to his placing the c r o w n i n g c a n on t h e (unconfirmed 1 world's largest beer pyram id at the Stroh's Reds R o o te rs' Weekend in Cincinnati last season

That may give you some idea what 11 in store for you, as a TV v i e w e r , if t h e n e t w o r k e x e c u tiv e s ta k e th o se illy surveys seriously Granted, they are* guaranteed to provide an a c c u r a t e c r o s s - s e c t io n of American types - but what if the com p u ter ja m m e d and everyone selected has the same ta ste s as th is e x -frat jock sweetie of mine?

A character sketch of slightly more depth might give you some hint of the future prime time line-up . . .

First of all. he would refuse to work for any firm that does not have a com pany b a se b a ll, basketball, and bowling team He even went so far as to ask the president to install a hoop in the parking lot so he could practice during lunch and after work

A few weeks ago. I slaved away for three hours to prepare a fa n ta stic m eal including

•cratch green pepper steak, egg rolls, and egg-drop soup He

arrived right on time (which is ahrays 1 4 hours Late) with tiro bottles of white wine and his portable TV. I had stupidly scheduled my dinner on the same night as the UCLA-Notre Dame game If Bill Walton had knocked on my door as my love was woofing down his dinner, that overgrown carrot would have received a well-aimed chopatkk to the left eye

Late dates have been the rule for the past bittersweet year, but not so late as to miss ch am p io n sh ip “ w r a s l i n , "

s t a r r i n g h is f a v o r i t e s — Handsome Jimmy Valiant (from the Big Apple, New York City) and Pepper Gomes (from the Big Tomato, Mexico City) Even though things are going to be fine once the Star Spangled Banner is over, I silently curse the man who decided to make it an hour-long show. As any norm al hot-blooded fem ale knows, at t a m Saturday, body slams and sleeper holds ought to have an e n tire ly d iff e r e n t meaning.

Early spring was once my favorite season, until I spent a few Sunday afternoons at his apartment Tandem televisions display both the NBA and ABA playoffs, and the transistor radio trum pets an exhibition Reds game as some hockey team slides the puck around the ice on the AM-FM console

I have exaggerated nothing So next season, if " T o m a " is replaced by “Csonka," BUI-boy elbows out John-boy, Desenez commercials go for 9)00,000 a minute, and Ara Parseghian delivers m editation — don't blame me

Just learn to tolerate it as I have, and Join my 3 a m prayer that they only play one chorus of the National Anthem

J)em an d in g to speak to the manager, the flunky gave me this cryptic response. Well, he doesn't want to come out here because of THE PEOPLE (?) I left in a huff and planned to review it anyway

d f f t e m d

I'm not even going to bother Thank you. Mr Carlisle of Glendale Cinema III and IV. for your unflinching courtesy to the students of ItJPU l and your steadfast willingness to stick to your word H I remember it the nest time I review one of your feature presentations

Now that I've gotten that out of my system. I can turn to the review of “ Mean Streets.’* This is one hell of a good movie Don t ask who s in it. I don't know any of the actors, but whoever they were, they did a commendable job David Carradine had a bit part as a drunk and he didn't screw it up too bad

When you see this, don't get worried if you can t make heads or tails out of it for the first hour, there is no discemable plot nearly all the way through it New York City is the setting and just a part of that, a place innominately referred to as “ the neighborhood,” is where most of the movie takes place The neighborhood is a lower-class Italian habitat, which houses Charlie, Johnny Boy. Michael and Tony It is not really evident jugt what Charlies does for a living The sto ry does not develop backgrounds for any characters, they are just there, b u t C h a r l i e is th e m a in character His uncle “ runs” the neighborhood and is connected with the Mafia in some way. but it is not really clear how Johnny- Boy lives in the next building and is slightly deranged He owes Michael, who plays the heavy, in excess of 12.000 In f a c t . J o h n n y Boy o w e s

# everybody money and never pays it back Tony owns a restaurant where the people in the neighborhood gather For an hour, that s all vou have to go on

The m o v ie s k ip s a ro u n d , showing different incidents in e v ery day liv in g , but one particular scene keeps becoming m ore and m ore prom inent Michael begins to hound Charlie about Johnny Boy's debt

Charlie plays Johnny Boy's protector and keeps putting Michael off, pleading that he ll straighten Johnny out He yells at Johnny. Johnny says he'll straighten up but never does In the climax of the movie. Johnny draws a gun and threatens to - shoot Michael and right then you know Johnny's had It Michael finally collects in the end

The film is incredibly graphic, examining minutely the squalor, the poverty and the corruption of small time hoods There is no big M afia bull like ’ The G odfather," these men are at the bottom of the heap and suddenly, m this movie, anyooe even remotely connected with the Mafia ti e Charlie's unde) wields tremendous influence The characters are extremely unimpressive, bland, if you will, but they appear as humans While the movie-goer might not relate to the parts, one can feel emotion towards the characters and empathize with them and their plight The movie was a great emotional experience

There you have it You can either stand in line for a few hours to see a flick that will make you vomit or worse, or you can relax and experience a good, solid movie that will make you aware of your existence and humanity fa k e your pick

Recently, due to an extreme lack of money. 1 began to pursue an old hobby — search in g through *the Bargain bins (79- cent specials. 3 for |1. $1 79 each; however they’re selling them) for record buys This is sort of a cross between | a garage sale and obituaries to see if you anybody It ta k e s a littl e expertise and a UtUe courage Or. as an Air Force friend of mine puMt; no guts, no glory

The m a rk e t Is v ir tu a lly limitless - all of the records within about the last thirteen or fourteen years that, for one reason or another, haven't sold That they haven't sold isn't always an indication that they're bad albums; in some cases, it's simply a m atter that the record m anufacturer who produced them went out of business, the star was simply an Unknown at the time, or the record company d id n 't h av e the m oney to promote them

H o o ra y ! Lou R eed is a ROCKER! This live album contains “Sweet Jan e” with an i n t r o by " H u n t e r ” ( l a n H unter?), “ H eroin,'’ White Light/W hite H e a t,’’ “ Lady Day,” and “ Rock and Roll ’ The backup band is terrific. Lou's vocals are wrecked greatness incarnate, and every cut is a classic BUY THIS’ NOW*

P l a y i n ' My F id d l e f o r You Papa John Creech/RCA Records

I have no way of telling you if you’ll like this or not. but I liked it The album or the music is a blending of jazz and soul with neither dominating Papa John plays very well He shounds like - Sugarcane Harris without the ego He sings like an empty oil barrel full of rusty nails rolling down a hill, but the record is good if you like Sugarcane

I don t know exactly what she is b ut h e r n am e is S a ra h Kernochan and her new album Meuse of Pain on RCA <APLl 03431 is a real turkey This record proves that it takes more than back up musicians and an RCA sound studio to work miracles, and a miracle is all that could help this one

With a voice that reminds one of Jocu Mitchell right after she was kicked in the stomach and lyrics that were written by the mule that did the kicking this bird will set a new world s record getting to the cut-out bins Weak lyrics and poor timing are off-set at tunes when a very attractive note or two falls from the lips of this very attractive girl

The album credits give special thanks to New York s finest string players and 1 will agree that the back ground music is not bad and orriiestrations bare marks of genious if only you could get that girl to quit singing those dumb lyncs

I can't recommend any single cut but then I can't recommend which ones to avoid and 1 think the plague will be more popular than this record be Kernochan One thing that did strike me as I listened and that was is Uus kid trying to see how crazy we are ’ by putting this album on the m arket and somewhere there if, this beauuuutiful chick laughing her ass off at us

To quote one cut called Chez Rosemary" “Oh at least we re not bored Is there anything more We could always eat the paint Off Rosemary s floor ”
