Introduction

The Current Situation in Industry and Research

The ICT and media sectors are therefore one of the largest employers in the German economy. Leading position in the introduction of new lithographic processes (strategic alliance with ASML in the Netherlands). ICT is also one of the key technology areas in BMWi's open technology programs.

Research Funding: A New Direction

In addition to the division of work within Europe, it is also necessary to establish strategic alliances with other economic and research regions (eg the USA), especially in those areas where roadmaps exist, such as microelectronics (eg Sematech). But even this has revealed that in the field of research it is difficult to define goals that go beyond mere technical parameters (eg the development of purely optical networks by 2005) and that can be used as a basis for a meaningful "measurement of success". The evolution towards a knowledge society is formed together with all socially relevant groups within the framework of the national research dialogue – the FUTUR process.

Research Areas

Nanoelectronics and Systems

  • Technologies and Devices for Electronics Production
  • New Types of Circuits and Components
  • Chip Systems and Design Methods

A wide range of companies are involved in the electronics value chain; the number of semiconductor manufacturers, on the other hand, is relatively small. At the core of the guide is the progressive reduction of the size of the structure over the last years as a basis for all performance increases in the field of economy, complexity, energy consumption and other criteria that are a prerequisite for the development of mass markets. This variety of system requirements is the main source of added value in the field of electronics.

Such aggressive further development is increasingly confronted with fundamental shortcomings in the field of material and device technology. Funding to meet requirements in the field of nanoelectronics should not be limited simply to the corresponding physical basic research. This includes the need to use new materials in the chips, or packaging tailored to chip performance.

Materials that can be found directly in the final product/circuit (material for metallization level, materials with extreme values of dielectric constants - low and high kappa dielectric, housing raw materials, and so on). German industry is a leader in system architectures (system-on-chip), especially in telecommunications, chip cards and the automotive industry. With the reduction of the feature size and the increase in the size of chips, the number of transistors per chip the billion mark.

Consideration and possible use of parasitic effects in the design flow or for chip design.

Software systems

  • Software Engineering
  • Supercomputers and Grid Computing
  • Human/Technology Interaction
  • Intelligent Systems/Knowledge Processing
  • Bioanalogous Information Processing

The hardware developments expected in the next few years (such as a processor whose complexity is increased threefold) will further exacerbate the problem. Base: 18,988 companies in the primary and secondary sectors currently involved in b/w development/adaptation (n=899), multiple entries possible. The development of economic applications for supercomputers is (internationally) relatively widespread in the numerical area.

Extremely extensive requirements can be expected in the next few years in the non-numerical area. In the non-numerical field, broad areas of application should be exploited by developing suitable methods and processes (data mining, database applications, intelligent image processing, combinatorial methods and optimization, non-numerical simulation). There is great potential for optimization within production and logistics chains.

In virtual and augmented reality, in addition to visual representation, a "representation of other senses". Voice data collection in Germany should be improved as it is the basic prerequisite for unit development in the industry. Much has been achieved in the field of research and application of intelligent systems over the past ten years.

In light of the current explosion of knowledge in the field of genome research and molecular biology, it is worth searching for further biological principles that can be applied to information processing systems.

Basic Technologies for Communications Engineering

  • Photonic Communication Networks
  • Mobile Broadband Communication Systems
  • Innovative Display Technology
  • New Components and Materials

The aim is to advance fundamental research in new communication technologies, so that new materials and new physical effects, such as in quantum physics, can be used to develop innovative components. On the other hand, fundamental research is carried out in selected areas in order to make new products and services possible in the longer term. Germany has high industrial and research potential, providing an excellent opportunity to take a leading role in the strategic field of optical routers.

On the other hand, the integration of IP-based network into public networks is being studied. As a result, key components for analog and digital multi-band and multi-standard interfaces (transmitters, receivers, mixers and antennas) are required. Only with a distinctive research and development infrastructure will Germany have the opportunity to improve its position in the field of displays based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) or, for example, projection screens.

In the future, Germany's greatest chances are seen in the field of automobiles and communication screen technology. This technology is also considered to have a lot of potential in the field of flexible displays. Gallium nitride (GaN) material is also required for efficient light sources and lasers, especially in the blue and ultraviolet light range.

This area of basic research in particular has developed dynamically in the last few years.

Internet Basics and Services

  • New Internet Technologies
  • Knowledge in the Internet
  • Research into Internet-Supported Processes

Knowledge on the Internet: research networks and services for special needs in the field of research and science and new methods of efficient organization and use of information on the Internet. In the further technical development of the Internet, Europe still plays a subordinate role at the intersection between technology and services. This could benefit both market opportunities for the European industry in the field of Internet equipment and especially the development of innovative Internet applications.

The scientific gigabit network means that one of the most efficient communication networks in the world today is available for science and research in Germany. Semantic WEB as well as tools and structures for describing, analyzing, filtering, processing, compressing and presenting information on the Internet. Processes, middleware and tools for distributed computing and collaboration on the Internet (such as grid).

Under the theme of "Living and working in a networked world", the IaC group pursues a program of application-oriented basic and preliminary research. In addition to the institutes of the IaC group, the seven institutes in the Fraunhofer Microelectronics Consortium (VµE) are also concerned with current questions in IT research. The research centers in Jülich and Karlsruhe are primary contacts in the field of IT at the Helmholtz association.

In addition, the research also concentrates on the use of supercomputers in scientific computing in research and development.

Public IT Research Landscape in Germany

Institute of Nuclear and Energy Technologies (IKET) as well as Institute for Reactor Safety (IRS): modeling and experimental validation of computer codes developed for the calculation of currents in microchannels (lab-on-chips and micro-reactors). Research Center Karlsruhe Industry Forum Micro Production Technology (FIF): For an annual contribution, FIF member companies receive special access to the knowledge and experience of the research center. Many topics covered in the MPG institutes are directly or indirectly relevant to information technology.

Essential new initiatives for microsystems technology come from the research fields of the scientific and bioscientific Max Planck Institutes. The humanities institutes of the Max Planck Society are concerned with the social influences and the framework requirements of the new technologies. Innovative developments in the field of providing scientific information and the electronic preparation and communication of scientific content are expected from the Heinz Nixdorf Center for Information Management in the MPG, which started working on 1 September 2001.

Wafer test, gluing and packaging of the chip, up to and including the final test of the salable part (also known as component and packaging technology). German Research Network (Deutsches Forschungsnetz) – the computerized information and communication system for science, research and education in Germany, managed by the DFN Association (www.dfn.de). Number of functional elements on a chip, such as transistors; for example, the Pentium P6 chip consists of approx.

In a network such as the Internet, a service is an application that is available to all the computers connected to the network.
