Indiana University - Purdue University in Indianapolis administratively combines the activities of the two universities in Indianapolis. About half of the university's collection, more than five million volumes, is located in the University Library.

MEDICAL CENTER

Indiana University has chapters of the freshman scholastic organizations Alpha Lambda Delta, for women, and Phi Eta Sigma, for men. Other selective honors, such as Phi Beta Kappa of the College of Arts and Sciences, Order of the Coif of the School of Law, and Phi Delta Kappa of the School of Education, are described in the specific school bulletins. This campus is one of the few medical centers in the country that has its own Union Building.

The Union Building offers a variety of activities and services for students, faculty, staff and guests of the University. The combined libraries of the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing are located in the Medical Sciences building. This service is available to students in the School of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry, the Department of Allied Health Sciences and the Graduate School of Social Services, and the Normal College of the American Gymnastics Association, as well as students, staff and faculty of the University.

HISTORY

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING 17 In accordance with the goals and ideals of Indiana University, the faculty accepts its primary responsibility for the effective education of the men and women who are its students. The faculty accepts the basic principle, embodied in the goals and ideals of the university, that a school is not merely an association of teachers, but rather consists of scholars who are effective teachers. Its continued existence as a profession is tied to society's perception of the effectiveness with which it serves the nursing needs of society.

Education means the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes within democratic practices that encourage free inquiry. Essential to any effective education is self-inclusion and self-direction within the student's abilities. Learning experiences should be designed to achieve integration, sequencing and continuity of knowledge, skills and attitudes defined by objectives.

PROGRAMS

It is based not only on undergraduate liberal education, but on undergraduate achievement of professional knowledge, attitudes and skills that contribute to the preparation of a professional nurse. The disciplines that make up the subject content of postgraduate education in nursing are those that are relevant to the theory and practice of nursing and to the current and future role of nursing in society's health systems. Its product is a highly competent and independent practitioner in a chosen field of nursing who can effectively guide the development of nursing theory, the improvement of nursing practice, and the exploration of nursing issues and problems.

Democracy is a way of approaching life in a society characterized by growth from within by the activities of the members of that society; upon acceptance of change; trusting that reasonable solutions to problems will prevail; and by the conviction that power and authority are always relative to the consent of the governed. The philosophy and goals of the Associate of Arts program appear in this section of the Bulletin. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

FACILITIES FOR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES

Turtle Creek Convalescent Center, Indianapolis Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis Visiting Nurse Association of Indianapolis Winona Hospital, Indianapolis. All programs use an increasing number of community resources located throughout the state of Indiana, including public and private, large and small hospitals, public social services, public schools, schools for the disabled and exceptional, rehabilitation centers, mother and child centers. nursing homes, mental health clinics, nursing homes and doctor's offices.

STUDENT SERVICES Guidance and Counseling Services

Federal internships are available to registered nurses who are enrolled in full-time continuing studies in the final year of the baccalaureate program or in master's or post-master's programs. This organization is part of the Indiana Association of Nursing Students and the National Student Nurses' Association. It is the central governing body of the College of Nursing, open to all students and faculty. A grade of I can only be given if the work on the course is essentially completed and successful.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

ACADEMIC STANDING OF STUDENTS

For additional information, write to the director of the Associate Arts in Nursing program at the campus where enrollment is desired. Inquiries regarding the School of Nursing may be directed to the Dean, School of Nursing, Indiana University Medical Center, 1232 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. All applicants should write to the Office of Records and Admissions, Bryan Hall, Indiana University, Bloomington , Indiana 47401 or, for enrollment in Indianapolis, to the Director of Admissions, Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis, 1201 East.

Submission of written applications for certification to the School of Nursing no later than March 15th prior to anticipated fall enrollment. Students from other colleges and universities with credits for more than one year of study must be admitted to the university before submitting an application for certification to the School of Nursing no later than March 15th before the expected date. Graduate nursing students receive their nursing school certificate after enrolling in university and submitting their nursing school application.

ADVANCED ST ANDING

Completion of all study required for the degree within six years from the time the student first enrolls in the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing will not be responsible for certifying the student for the degree if the student fails to submit the application. A student may withdraw from school when, in the judgment of the Committee on Admission, Progress and Graduation, there is a lack of progress toward graduation.

The study plan for the matura is a flexible study program that can be implemented according to several plans, depending on the student's abilities and wishes. The first year takes place in Bloomington, Indianapolis, or one of Indiana University's other campuses. Graduate Programs

ELIGIBILITY

Application forms for all graduate programs may be obtained from Graduate Admissions, School of Nursing, Indiana University Medical Center, 1232 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Approved general education courses may be taken at any Indiana University campus; nursing courses are offered only at Indiana University Medical Center. The condition may be waived upon submission of documents required for degree or licensure, or, in the case of a non-accredited program, upon satisfactory completion of one semester of graduate study.

An applicant who has deficiencies at the matriculation exam can be admitted, provided that the deficiencies do not amount to more than one year's work. An applicant whose grade point average is less than 3.0 may be considered for admission on probation. Postponement can be granted upon written request, subject to adjustment of enrollment status to the requirements of the new enrollment period.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDACY

Probationary work is completed after one semester (or equivalent) of postgraduate study with an average grade of at least 3.0. Part-time studies are possible if the program is completed within six years. Part-time students must consult with their advisors each semester to maintain an active status for their record.

POLICIES GOVERNING GRADUATE STUDY

The emphasis is on the impact of illness on the growing, developing child and his family and the nurse's role in restoring and maintaining health. The area of ​​Nursing Service Administration offers a major aimed at promoting competence in students preparing to direct or assist a hospital nursing service or a major department or activity of a hospital nursing service. The program requires a minimum of 4 academic semesters; initial enrollment in the first semester is recommended.

Courses in this area help nurses apply nursing education theory and clinical nursing expertise to teaching nursing in educational settings. The student participates both in selected learning experiences under the guidance of the graduate faculty in the field of nursing and in concurrent seminars. Required courses in teaching nursing: Education P525, Advanced Educational Psychology and H530, Philosophy of Education; Nursing T570, T515 and T575.

The number of credit hours for the course is indicated in parentheses after the course title.

BACCALAUREATE COURSES

Examination of the more important state and federal court decisions affecting facets of nursing and modern nursing; visible trends within the Nursing Act and the underlying philosophies. Survey of the community and its resources for mother-child care; participation in local health programs. Examination of the psychosocial context of maternity care to develop a broad perspective of the maternity patient and maternity care.

Studying concepts related to family-centered care; participation in an ongoing family-centered hospital program; Parent education classes included. Study of selected social factors related to mental illness relevant to the clinical practice of psychiatric mental health nursing in both institutional and community settings.
