College of Health students are responsible for planning their programs and for completing degree requirements. INllIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF HEALTH NURSING 9 student in the College of Arts and Sciences enrolled in the number of credit hours for which the employee or spouse is entitled to payment.

Rule Determining Resident and Nonresident Student Status

A person's citizenship shall not be a factor in determining resident student status if such person has the legal ability to remain permanently in the United States. A person properly classified as a resident student shall be deemed to remain a resident student so long as he remains continuously enrolled at the University until the degree has been earned, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 3;.

BLOOMINGTON CAMPUS

The combined libraries of the College of Medicine and the School of Medicine form the Indiana University School of Medicine Library, located in the Medical Science Building. This service is available to full-time students and university staff and teaching staff.

HISTORY

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

In keeping with the goals and ideals of Indiana University, the faculty accepts its primary responsibility for the effective teaching of the men and women who are its students. Its continuation as a profession is related to society's perception of the effectiveness with which it meets society's nursing needs. Education means the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes within democratic practices that encourage free inquiry.

Essential to all effective education is self-involvement and self-management within the student's competence. Learning experiences should be planned to achieve integration, sequencing and continuity of knowledge, skills and attitudes defined by the objectives.

PROGRAMS

Its main method is the complex intellectual activity that is characteristic of the Master's program in general. It is not only based on bachelor's liberal education, but on bachelor's results in professional knowledge, attitudes and skills, which contribute to the preparation of the professional nurse. The disciplines that make up the subject content of the master's degree in nursing are those that are relevant to the theory and practice of nursing and to the current and future role of nursing in society's health systems.

The product is the highly competent and self-directed practitioner in a selected area of ​​nursing who can exercise effective leadership in the development of nursing theory, the improvement of nursing practice and the investigation of nursing issues and problems. The philosophy and objectives of the Associate of Arts program are contained in that section of the Bulletin.

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS

University Hospitals Nursing Service is a member agency of the Council on Hospital and Allied Institutional Nursing Service, National League for Nursing. The School of Nursing Alumni Association is a constituent member of the University Alumni Association with representation on its Executive Council. Any student who wishes to be employed in various departments on the IUPUI campus may apply to the Medical Center Personnel Department or the Office of Student Placement.

Baccalaureate students who have completed the second year can apply for employment in the nursing service of the University Hospitals. Application is made to the Associate Director or Chairman of the area where employment is desired.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Requests for information should be directed to the Office of Veterans Affairs, Cavanaugh Hall, Room 347, IUPUI, 925 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Students may apply to the Armed Forces for appointments to the Army Student Nurse Program or to the navy. Nursing Candidate Program. Registered nursing students studying at the Bloomington or IUPUI campuses can apply for positions at hospitals in Bloomington or Indianapolis.

On the Bloomington campus, appointments as counselors in the Halls of Residence are also available. Registered nursing students who work 24 hours during the week or weekends in the University Hospitals are eligible for fee remission.

GENERAL POLICIES GOVERNING STUDY-IUPUI

The WF grade is reported when the student fails on the withdrawal date and is included in the calculation of the grade point average as the grade F. After the automatic W period, the faculty member's signature is also required per form. The grade I can only be given when the course work has essentially been completed and is of passing quality.

Additional authorization signatures, when necessary, are specified with a listing of the course in the class schedule. The nurse participates in the profession's efforts to define and upgrade standards for nursing practice and education.

Undergraduate Programs

Applicants over the age of 54 will be interviewed by Associate of Arts faculty prior to admission. Applications may be obtained from the IUPUI Admissions Office, 1201 East 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46205, or Indiana University School of Nursing, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Students already attending IUPUI who wish to change their major to the Asso - ciate of Arts Nursing Program must contact the school office.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

ACADEMIC STANDING OF STUDENTS

For further information write to the Director of the Associate Arts in Nursing Program at the campus where enrollment is desired. Inquiries regarding the School of Nursing may be directed to the Dean, Indiana University School of Nursing, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Students will be considered for certification for the baccalaureate major according to the process outlined below.

Submission of written Application for Certification to the School of Nursing no later than April 15 before anticipated fall enrollment or November 15 for spring enrollment. Registered nursing students are admitted to the School of Nursing after admission to the University and submission of application to the School of Nursing.

ADVANCED ST ANDING

The student must file a degree application with the registrar for the appropriate program on an application blank received from that office. The School of Nursing will not be responsible for certifying the student for the degree if the student fails to submit the application. A student is considered to be a candidate in good standing for the baccalaureate degree when regularly admitted to the University and the School of Nursing; when his academic grade is not less than 2.0 for the work of the last semester; having earned at least a C in any clinical nursing course; and when his cumulative average is not below 2.0.

A student may be dismissed from the School when, in the judgment of the Admissions, Progression and Graduation Committee, there is a lack of progress towards the degree. The Committee for Admission, Progress and Graduation can approve re-admission if the conditions set at the time of dismissal have been met and there is evidence that successful progress with the degree can be made.

CURRICULUM DESIGN

A student will be placed on academic probation if the cumulative grade point average is less than 2.0; when the semester average falls below 2.0; Academic probation expires after the semester in which the cumulative average and semester average are 2.0 or higher. Failure to achieve a 2.0 grade point average in two consecutive semesters and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is considered evidence of lack of progress.

A student who is dismissed from school may file a petition for reinstatement with the dean's office at least one semester before the required registration date. The advanced standing exam is offered to graduates of the hospital and arts in nursing program.

Graduate Programs

ELIGIBILITY

Admission to the School of Nursing does not automatically mean admission to candidacy for the advanced degree. The School of Nursing will not be responsible for degree certification if the student fails to submit the application. The student must obtain the consent of the academic advisor before credits earned at other institutions are added to the official transcript.

With the consent of the academic advisor, the student may decide to exchange the thesis for a research study. Additional courses in statistics and research methodology may be required for students who wish to have these additional experiences.

Community Mental Health Nursing

The field of Nursing Administration offers a major that aims to promote competence in students who are preparing to lead or assist in the direction of nursing services. The basic administration course content is derived from current theoretical constructs of organization and management that are being developed within the behavioral science fields. A minimum of 6 credit hours of the total minor hours should be taken in the required management program courses.

The field of teacher education offers a minor to assist the nurse in using educational and nursing theory and clinical nursing expertise in nursing education in educational settings. The student will participate in selected teaching-learning experiences under the guidance of graduate faculty in the nursing major and in concurrent seminars.

Continuing Education Program

Not designed to develop an understanding of the concepts and practices fundamental to the care of aJI patients. Exploration of specialist nurse responsibilities and functions within selected areas of paediatrics. Investigation of the biological and physiological bases for expert nursing diagnostics and targeted nursing in maternity nursing.

Survey of the community and its resources for mother-child care; participation in local health programs. Examination of the psychosocial context of maternity care to develop a broad perspective of the maternity patient and maternity care.
