Sc.SCHOOL OF NURSING 17 Postgraduate education in nursing is aimed at preparing scholars who can productively engage in complex intellectual activities. The disciplines that make up the subject content of postgraduate education in nursing are those that are relevant to the theory and practice of nursing and to the current and future role of nursing in society's health systems.
PROGRAMS
The postgraduate program is not only based on undergraduate liberal education, but on the achievement of professional knowledge, skills and values that contribute to the preparation of the professional nurse. The graduate must be a highly skilled and self-directed practitioner in a selected area of nursing who can exercise effective leadership in the development of nursing theory, the improvement of nursing practice, and the investigation of nursing issues and problems. The faculty supports continuing education for nurses as a necessary and ongoing process that will ensure the adequacy of their knowledge and skills in nursing.

STUDENT SERVICES Guidance and Counseling Services
In addition to general university scholarships and financial aid, special financial assistance is available for students at the School of Nursing. Students may apply to the Armed Services for appointments in the Army Student Nurse Program within 24 months of completing baccalaureate requirements. Any student seeking employment in the various departments on the IUPUI campus may contact the Human Resources Department at the Medical Center or the Student Placement Office.
Graduate students who have completed the second year can apply for employment in the nursing service of University Hospitals.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Professional nursing internships are available for registered nurses enrolled in full-time continuous study in the final year of the baccalaureate program or in master's or specialty programs. Advisor appointments in the Halls of Residence are also available on the Bloomington campus. Registered nursing students who work 24 hours a week in the university hospitals are eligible for a 50% remission of fees at the undergraduate level.
This organization provides opportunities for students to engage in service activities and promote interest in the field of nursing.
GENERAL POLICIES GOVERNING STUDY-IUPUI
Addition and change of section forms containing the appropriate signatures must be submitted by the student to the Office of the Registrar within ten days of the date of issue by the Office of the Registrar. Post-term authorized change of section forms require the signature of the instructor of the course in which the student is changing. Information may be obtained from the Office of the Assistant Dean, Student Services, School of Nursing.
The nurse participates in the profession's efforts to define and upgrade standards of nursing practice and education.
Undergraduate Programs
SCHOOL OF NURSING 25 b. Admission to support courses while enrolled in the IUPUI University Division or .. at other Indiana University campuses does not guarantee admission to the nursing major. Due to the demand for admission to the associate of arts nursing program and the limited number of available positions, admissions from the IUPUI University Division and other areas within the Indiana University system will be on a competitive basis. In reviewing records to determine admission to the associate of arts nursing major from the Indiana University system, the following guidelines will be observed.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
All records will be compiled and reviewed on specified review dates so applicants can have complete records ready. Individual consideration will be given to students whose responsibilities or financial status preclude carrying a full load. Completion of the degree requirements within four years of first enrollment in the associate art nursing major.
The record of the student who does not meet this requirement will be reevaluated under the current program.
ACADEMIC STANDING OF STUDENTS

Students will be considered for certification for the baccalaureate major according to the process outlined below.
Registered nursing students are admitted to the School of Nursing after admission to the University and submission of application to the School of Nursing.
ADVANCED ST ANDING
Completion of all required study for the degree within six years from the time the student certifies to the baccalaureate major. A student may be dismissed from the School of Nursing when, in the judgment of the Committee on Admission, Progression and Graduation, there is a lack of progress towards the degree. The following policies apply to all students certified for the baccalaureate major in the School of Nursing.
A student may be dismissed from the school if, in the opinion of the Admission, Progression and Graduation Committee, there is no progress toward the diploma.
CURRICULUM DESIGN
A student will be placed on academic probation when the cumulative grade point average is below 2.0 or when the semester average falls below 2.0. Academic probation will be removed after the semester in which the cumulative average and the semester average are 2.0 or higher. MASTER'S PROGRAM
ELIGIBILITY
Application forms for all graduate programs may be obtained from Graduate Admissions, Indiana University School of Nursing, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. The applicant may be conditionally admitted and may be required to remove deficiencies in the major and/or minor areas . An applicant who has deficiencies in the baccalaureate program may be admitted provided the deficiencies do not amount to more than one year's work.
An applicant whose grade point average is less than 3.0 may be considered for probationary admission.
REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDACY
Deferment may be granted by written request, subject to adjustment of admission status to the requirements of the new registration period. The student must obtain the consent of the academic advisor before credits earned at other institutions are added to the official transcript. Courses taken at any Indiana University campus may be applied to the degree, provided the proposed course schedule is approved in advance by the advisor.
Additional courses in statistics and research methodology may be required for the student who wishes to gain this additional experience.

Career tracks mapped for each student determine the sequence, placement and choice of learning experiences in each module. A minimum of 51 credit hours of study is required for the Master's Degree in Nursing. Clinical study is conducted in agencies responsible for the delivery of health care services in the local community and adjacent provinces.

The student participates in selected teaching and learning experiences under the guidance of graduate nursing faculty and in concurrent seminars. The teaching component of the minor builds on the student's clinical nursing major with teaching and learning experiences designed to meet individual career goals under the guidance of faculty graduates in the Continuing Nursing Education program. To test innovative strategies of interdisciplinary teaching of primary health care knowledge and skills for implementation in nursing programs.
Apply research methods and findings to the study and practice of the expanded nursing role in primary health care delivery.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Promote continuity of healthcare for adults and children by planning and adapting management as health needs indicate. Practice skilled nursing skills as evidenced by the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patient care within the context of the nursing process. Part-time study is possible, provided the course is completed within six years.
Part-time students must consult with their advisors each semester to maintain an active status for their record.
APPLICATION
SCHOOL OF NURSING 43 A candidate for the clinical nursing specialist degree must: (I) present at least 60 credit hours of courses that meet the curriculum requirements, of which the last 30 must be completed at I.U., (2) demonstrate professional competence in the field of study, (3 ) remove all conditions, deficiencies, probation, and incomplete grades, (4) achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, (5) achieve a grade point average of '.1.0 or higher in required nursing courses and a grade point average of 3.0, or more in all other subjects, (6) apply for the diploma when enrolling in the last semester. All degree requirements must be completed within two years of the time the student first applies to the University for the last 30 credit hours; otherwise, current requirements will require re-evaluation. Prerequisites for the last 30 credit hours of the clinical nursing specialist degree are :rn credit hc•urs completed at the graduate level.
The requirements for the final IDE credits of the Specialist in Clinical Nursing degree in the primary healthcare major are: rn credits obtained at the graduate level.
