HISTORY

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

The disciplines that constitute the content of graduate nursing education are those relevant to the theory and practice of nursing, and to the current and future role of nursing in society's health care systems. Furthermore, the faculty believes that the continued improvement of nursing practice depends on the knowledge and use of research.

PROGRAMS

The graduate must be a highly competent and self-oriented practitioner within a selected area of ​​nursing who can exercise effective leadership in the development of nursing theory, improvement of nursing practice, and investigation of nursing issues and problems. Research studies are underway in clinical nursing, administration of nursing services and improvement of teaching.

THE CODE FOR NURSES

All students new to the School of Nursing, IUPUI campus are expected to attend an orientation program at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Associates of Science and Basic Matriculation students wear uniforms determined by the school, while nursing students wear a uniform of their own choice.

Undergraduate Programs

Due to the demand for admission to the associate of science nursing program and the limited number of positions available, admissions from the IUPUI University Division and other areas within the Indiana University system will be on a competitive basis. BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

Credit for such courses and applicability to the degree will be determined by the University's Office of Records and Admissions and the School of Nursing . MASTER'S PROGRAM

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

SCHOOL OF NURSING 39 completion of one semester (12 credit hours) of postgraduate study with a grade point average of no less than 3.0. Admission to the School of Nursing does not automatically imply admission to candidacy for the advanced degree. Achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in required nursing courses and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all other courses.

Academic probation will be waived when the cumulative grade point averages for the required nursing courses and for all other courses are 3.0 or higher.

POLICIES GOVERNING MASTER'S STUDY

Candidates must meet both the general requirements for the master's program at the School of Nursing and the specific requirements for the main and secondary departments. The student must obtain consent from the student advisor before credits earned at other institutions can be added to the official transcript. A maximum of 9 credits with grades of B (3.0) or higher in courses that meet the requirements of the curriculum may be transferred from an accredited college or university with the consent of the study advisor.

With the consent of the professional advisor, the student may decide to change the diploma thesis in the study of nursing.

SPECIALIST PROGRAM

Admission to the specialist program requires the approval of the College of Health and the Faculty of Primary Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing. An applicant who graduated from a school before it was accredited by the National League for Nursing and in which the curriculum remained the same after accreditation will be considered for unconditional admission.

An applicant who has a baccalaureate degree in nursing without upper division nursing education or has a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing will be assessed for conditional admission by the Admissions Committee and the Faculty of Primary Health Care major.

APPLICATION

An applicant whose grade point average is less than 3.0 may be considered for probationary admission. Part-time study is possible, provided the course is completed within six years. Part-time students must consult with their advisors each semester to maintain the active status of their records.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDACY

A student may be dismissed from the School when, in the judgment of the Admissions, Progression and Graduation Committee, there is a lack of progress towards the degree. Students must complete a minimum of 60 graduate credit hours, the last 30 of which must be taken at Indiana University under the auspices of the School of Nursing. The prerequisites for the last 30 credit hours of the Specialist in Clinical Nursing degree are 30 credit hours taken at the graduate level.

In the academic year 1976/77, the postgraduate faculty of the College of Nursing developed a postgraduate program leading to the degree of Doctor of Science in Nursing.

Continuing Education Program

Descriptions of the various course offerings can be found in the annually published schedule of continuing education offerings. Emphasizes utilization of the nursing process, development of client-nurse relationships and practice of selected nursing skills in the clinical laboratory sailing. Presentation of a theoretical orientation to the study of the psychosocial response to the maternity event and implications for nursing intervention.
