School of Nursing

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

SCHOOL OF NURSING 19 Graduate education in nursing provides a broad scope in the sciences and humanities necessary to prepare professional nurses skilled in assessing nursing needs and providing nursing intervention. Furthermore, the faculty believes that the continuous improvement of nursing practice depends on the knowledge and use of research.

PROGRAMS

The disciplines that make up the subject content of the master's degree in nursing are those that are relevant to the theory and practice of nursing and to the current and future role of nursing in society's health systems. The graduate must be a highly competent and self-oriented practitioner within a selected area of ​​nursing who can exercise effective leadership in the development of nursing theory, improvement of nursing practice, and investigation of nursing issues and problems. Research studies are underway in clinical nursing, administration of nursing services and improvement of teaching.

The School of Nursing is a member agency of the Council on Associate Degree Programs and the Council on Graduate and Associate Degree Programs, National Association for Nursing. University Hospitals Nursing Service is a member agency of the Council on Hospital and Allied Institutional Nursing Service, National League for Nursing. The Continuing Education Program is accredited by the North Central Accreditation Committee of the American Nurses Association.

The Association of Graduates of the Faculty of Nursing is an integral member of the Association of Graduates of the University with representatives on its executive board. Turtle Creek Convalescent Center, Indianapolis University Heights Hospital, Indianapolis Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis Visiting Nurse Association of Indianapolis.

STUDENT SERVICES Guidance and Counseling Services

Information about emergency loans and short-term loans is available at the vice dean's office, Student Services. Bachelor students who have completed the second year can apply for employment in the nursing service at the University Hospitals. The main purpose of the organization is to help prepare students to assume professional responsibilities.

All post-baccalaureate students admitted to the School of Nursing are members of the organization. After the automatic W period, the faculty member's signature is also required on the form. The grade I can only be given when the course work has essentially been completed and is of passing quality.

Addition and change of section forms containing the appropriate signatures must be submitted by the student to the Registrar's Office within ten days of the date of issue. Post-term authorized change of section forms require the signature of the instructor of the course in which the student is changing.

THE CODE FOR NURSES

Further details regarding the provisions of the "Privacy Act" and a list of offices where student records are kept can be found in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities distributed at fall enrollment or available in the Dean of Students office. All students new to the College of Nursing, IUPUI campus are expected to attend an orientation program at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. All nursing students who have patient/client contact are required to carry professional indemnity insurance in the minimum amount.

A copy of the first page (cover) of the policy demonstrating proof of coverage is submitted to the recorder for each program. All students will meet the immunization requirements for health science students and the specific requirements necessary for nursing practice in hospitals or agencies used by the School of Nursing. For community nursing experience, all students wear the uniform designated by agency policy.

The nurse participates in activities that contribute to the continuous development of professional knowledge. The nurse works with members of the health professions and other citizens to promote community and national efforts to meet the health needs of the public.

Undergraduate Programs

Admission

Admissions from this program to the nursing major only take place in the autumn semester of each academic year. For further information, write to the director of the Associate of Science in Nursing Program on the campus where enrollment is desired. Inquiries regarding the School of Nursing may be directed to the Assistant Dean, Student Services, Indiana University School of Nursing, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202.

Admission to the School of Nursing at IUPUI does not guarantee certification for the baccalaureate nursing major. Credit for such courses and applicability to the degree are determined by the university's Office of Records and Admissions and the School of Nursing. Prospective students should study the requirements for admission to the School of Nursing, the specific curriculum requirements and sequences, and requirements for the degree.

Completion of all study required for the degree within six years from the time the student is certified in the major. The following policies apply to all students certified in the School of Nursing degree program.

Graduate Programs

MASTER'S PROGRAM

Candidates must meet both the general requirements of the Master's program in the School of Nursing and the specific requirements of the major and minor departments. A student may be dismissed from the school when, in the judgment of the Committee on Admission, Progression and Graduation, there is a lack of progress towards the degree. In addition to general policies described under the general statement of the School of Nursing, the following specific policies govern master's studies.

The student must obtain the consent of the Academic Advisor before credits earned at other institutions are added to the official transcript. After enrolling in Nursing Study R590 (3 yr.) or Thesis R699 (6 yr.), the student must register each semester and Summer Session I in R900, a non-credit, fee-specified pseudo-course up to the deferred grade (R) is removed. Probationary status must be removed at the end of the first semester (9 credit hours) of graduate study.

With the approval of the study advisor, a student can choose to replace the nursing course with a thesis. In F556, the emphasis is on the assessment and nursing care of the high-risk mother and the high-risk newborn, with special preparation for the extended nursing role in the care of the high-risk newborn.

SPECIALIST PROGRAM

Admission to the Specialist Program requires approval by the School of Nursing and by the faculty of the primary health care major. Candidates must meet both the general requirements of the Specialist Program in the School of Nursing and the specific requirements of the department. The record of the student who does not meet this requirement will be reevaluated under the current program.

A student may be dismissed from school when, in the judgment of the Committee on Admission, Progress and Graduation, there is a lack of progress toward graduation. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination A1>Standing Test with a minimum of 1000 total and submission of scores to the School of Nursing. Proof of application for registration must be submitted to the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs prior to the start of the first semester of registration.

Candidates must meet the requirements of the Doctoral Program in the School of Nursing and the specific requirements of any chosen minor(s) or double major. The pattern and duration of the doctoral program for the individual student is determined in consultation with the student's program committee.

Continuing Education Program

Descriptions of the various course offerings can be found in the annually published schedule of continuing education offerings. A systems approach is used in the medical management and nursing interventions of the acutely ill infant. The content includes embryonic development and the physiological changes at birth that cause abnormal conditions in the newborn.

Clinical laboratory experiences are provided in a variety of settings for the use of the nursing process in the care of individuals within the family context in the maternity cycle. It focuses on resolving interventions in the development and maintenance of the individual's achievement, belonging and his/her concept of sexuality using a problem-solving approach. Emphasis is on discussion of the application of the nursing process in the analysis of disturbances in the proper distribution of oxygen, fluids and electrolytes, and nutrients in the body. A discussion of the nursing process emphasizes the analysis of disorders of ingestion, digestion, absorption, and excretion.

GRADUATE COURSES

Study of the community and its resources !or mother-child care with special emphasis on mothers at risk; participation in community health programs. Presentation of a theoretical orientation for the study of the psychosomatic response to the birth event and implications for nursing intervention. Applying the epidemiological approach to the provision of nursing and other health care services in the community.

Emphasis is also placed on individual examination of the nature of the teaching within the nursing curriculum. The focus is on the integration of concepts and processes for evaluation and evaluation participation in a nursing education framework.
