Application Information about graduate studies, including literature and application materials, can be obtained through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs website (www.spea.iupui.edu). Public Affairs Core (9 courses; 24-26 credits)

If ECON E201, ECON E202 and/or POLS Y103 are used to fulfill a core requirement, the student must take additional credits from one of the overall curriculum areas (Core Communication, Mathematics/. Analytical Reasoning, Life and Natural Sciences, Cultural) Comprehension, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences) to achieve the additional SPEA general education requirements. Although students are not limited to only the core course listings and are encouraged to take higher level courses in these areas, depending on interests, minors or certificates.

Life and physical sciences (2 subjects, 6 credits) From the approved list, at least two subjects and six credits towards life and physical sciences. Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences (3 subjects; .9 credits) From the approved list, students must take at least three credits from the Arts and Humanities list and at least three credits from the Social Sciences list for a total of nine credits.

Policy Studies (B.S.P.A.)

Policy Studies Major (11 courses; 33 cr.) Select one of the following courses

Environmental Affairs after taking 12 credit hours, have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 in SPEA majors (sections III and IV), an overall cumulative GPA of 2.0, and a previous semester GPA of 2.0. Area of ​​Policy Emphasis (minimum 12 cr.) - Four courses must be chosen in consultation with a faculty mentor to allow the student to study a sector, policy, or skill in depth.

If HIST H106, HIST H106, and/or SPEA K300 are used to fulfill a core requirement, the student must take additional credit from one of the general areas of the core curriculum (Core Communication, Mathematics/Analytical Reasoning, Life and Natural Sciences, Cultural Understanding , Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences) to obtain the additional SPEA prerequisite credits for General Education.

Public Safety Management Major (16 courses; 48 cr.) Required courses

On the Indianapolis campus, no more than 50 percent of courses taken to fulfill the requirements of the Public Safety Management concentration may be transfer courses from other accredited higher education institutions; including all IU campuses. SPEA Good Standing requires: a previous semester 2.0 GPA, a cumulative 2.0 GPA, as well as 2.3 GPA in SPEA major courses.

Ivy Tech ASCJ to IUPUI BSCJ

Also at IUPUI, the student follows the previous study plan, provided he or she is continuously enrolled in Criminal Justice. Students admitted to Ivy Tech beginning in Fall 2013 will follow the Statewide Core and New Criminal Justice Articulation Agreement between Ivy Tech and IUPUI.

Honors Program

If a student is unable to meet the GPA requirements in the following terms, they may be expelled from the SPEA Honors program. The student must meet with the SPEA Honors Advisor each semester to complete the contract required to enroll in the honors course.

Leadership Programs

Any student who does not meet the GPA requirements will be placed on probation for one semester, must meet with the SPEA Honors Advisor to discuss his or her status in the program, and must complete an Honors Probation Contract. SPEA classes taken for Honors credit will include additional requirements beyond those in the regular course offerings.

Minors and Certificates

Taking courses from full-time SPEA faculty will be preferred for Honors credit SPEA courses. Additional or other questions about exams; these questions may cover additional material or require mastery of material beyond the level required in the regular course.

Certificate in Nonprofit Management

Students must be in good academic standing and enrolled in a baccalaureate program to apply for most of these certificates. A grade point average of 2.0 or higher is required in all course sections that count toward the certificate.

Certificate in Public Affairs

Admission to the certificate program in nonprofit management requires the following: Admission to the School of Public and Environmental Affairs or current enrollment in any IU degree program. The certificate in Public Affairs requires satisfactory completion of the following: Student must complete a total of 18 credit hours, with at least a 2.3 GPA in all required coursework for the certificate.

Minor in Civic Leadership

SPEA's double-counting policy allows SPEA students to double-count 2 courses or 6 credits between any combination of SPEA majors, minors, and certificates.

Minor in Criminal Justice

Students must declare their intent to receive a minor by completing an application, which is available in SPEA Student Services, BS 3025 or online. It can be drawn from the courses in the above list that are NOT used to fulfill that requirement.

Minor in Criminal Justice Accounting

During the final registration period, students must also apply to minor in their degree by completing the SPEA Graduation Application.

SPEA-V 346 Introduction to Government Accounting and Financial Reporting (3 cr.) OR SPEA-V 356 Introduction to Nonprofit Organization Accounting and Reporting (3 cr.). SPEA-V 373 Human Resources Management in the Public Sector (3 cr.) If not taken to fulfill the above requirement.

Scholarships

Plater International Scholars (application by April 1) The Plater International Scholars Award supports a SPEA student committed to international affairs. To apply, you must be a SPEA student in good academic standing and demonstrate academic excellence.

Student Learning Outcomes

Eligible students must have graduated in the top 25% of their high school class and earned an SAT score of 1000 or higher (or ACT score of 21 or higher). Current full-time and retired officers and firefighters in the state of Indiana are eligible to receive scholarship money to pay the cost of tuition and fees for up to four IUPUI courses each year (two courses per semester, maximum).

Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs (BSPA)

Understand the principles of financing and budgeting in the non-profit sector and be able to undertake basic financial and budgeting activities in this context. Understand the principles of human resource management and be able to apply them in the context of a public or non-profit organization.

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ)

Understand the decision-making in public and nonprofit organizations, and be able to contribute to that process in those organizations. Articulate methods for recognizing and resolving crisis situations, including crisis planning, crisis management, and ethical decision-making processes and practices.

Undergraduate Certificates

Describe the dynamics and processes (individual, group, institutional bureaucratic and psychological) that can influence decision-making during crises, and articulate methods for learning from previous approaches.

Admissions

International students must apply to SPEA through the online application, complete the international section and pay the non-refundable international application fee (subject to change). Applicants may submit LSAT (Law School Admission Test) scores in lieu of GRE (Graduate Record. Examination) scores.

Master of Public Affairs

S. in Criminal Justice and Public Safety

SPEA will accept the same paper application that you submitted to the Office of International Affairs (OIA), along with additional documents required by SPEA, but online application is preferred. SPEA considers scores from the GRE, GMAT, or LSAT, but the GRE (http://www.ets.org/gre) is most common among our applicants.

Awards & Scholarships

A combined score of 300 or more (verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or. Graduate Student Assistantships SPEA IUPUI offers graduate assistantships and University Fellowships through a competitive application process.

Nonprofit Management

In exchange for the 20 hours per week, GAs receive full tuition, most fees, student health.

Nonprofit Management (Online)

SPEA-V 525 Management in the Non-Profit Sector (3 cr.) The course provides a survey of topics important to non-profit management. SPEA-V 526 Financial Management for Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.) This course emphasizes a thorough understanding of the language and key concepts of nonprofit financial management.

Public Management

SPEA-V 562 Public Program Evaluation (3 cr.) Study of how public bodies' programs are proposed, established, operated and evaluated. SPEA-V 598 Governance and Management in a Global Society (3 cr.) This gateway course will increase students' appreciation of the role of public affairs professionals in governance across multiple sectors of society in the global context.

Public Management (Online)

Students will learn the norms associated with effective practice in public affairs and develop a professional development plan to acquire the leadership skills to support these norms.

Master of Library Science - Public Management

Up to 12 SLIS graduate credits may be taken off the Indianapolis campus, which may include courses from the Bloomington campus and up to six graduate credits from another ALA-accredited program leading to the MLS. The second degree or certificate awarded with the MLS is subject to individual unit requirements and specific electives approved by that unit.

Master of Library Science - Nonprofit Management

Complete a minimum of 30 graduate SLIS credits, including courses to meet the MLS core areas, and special SLIS electives as indicated. An online application and information can be obtained through the website; materials are also available from the Graduate Program Office.

Executive Graduate Certificate in Library Management

Social Entrepreneurship

Internships for the Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship must meet certain criteria to qualify and must be approved by the Director of the Social Entrepreneurship program. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE V559 BEFORE THEY CAN QUALIFY FOR AN INTERNSHIP IN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP.

Certificate Programs

All internships must receive prior approval, unless it can be shown that a student has had prior experience in social entrepreneurship and the student is applying for credit for experience in lieu of an internship. Students admitted to a SPEA degree program are not eligible for admission to the certificate program or are not eligible for the award of a certificate.

Homeland Security and Emergency Management

Students who have completed more than three SPEA graduate courses are not eligible to enroll in the certificate program. Acceptance or successful completion of the certificate program does not guarantee subsequent admission to SPEA's graduate degree program.

PHST-P 535 Law of Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.) Other courses must be approved by the faculty advisor. SPEA-V 590 Public Affairs Research (3 cr.) PLUS A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL COURSES TO MEET THE MINIMUM DEGREE REQUIREMENT 48 CREDIT HOURS WITH A 3.0 CUMULATIVE GPA.

Those with mid-career credit should consult with their faculty advisor to determine how this changes their course plans. Up to 3 credit hours of the concentration courses may be taken in SPEA-J 585 Practicum in Public Affairs if approved in advance by the faculty advisor.

Grading System SPEA follows the official Indiana University Grading System, as described in the introductory section of the bulletin. Complete details can be found in the Indiana University Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct at http://life.iupui.edu/help/.

Undergraduate Policies

The SPEA major GPA is considered when a student completes 12 or more credits in the major. Grading Policy SPEA follows the official Indiana University grading system, described in the introductory section of the bulletin.

Student Organizations &

In addition, the student is responsible for planning his or her own academic program, planning class schedules, and meeting requirements for his or her degree or certificate programs. The student is responsible for maintaining and regularly monitoring their University accounts, including email and bursary accounts.

Services

A student is responsible for using University property and facilities in the pursuit of his or her education while being aware of the rights of others to do the same. Transfer Course Policy (also listed in Hour Requirements) Students may not transfer more than 90 credit hours (60 credits from a junior college) toward a Bachelor of Science degree or 30 credit hours toward an Associate of Science degree.

Internships and Experiential Learning

On the Indianapolis campus, no more than 50 percent of the courses taken to fulfill the requirements of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Management majors may be transfer courses from other accredited institutions of higher education, including all IU campuses (this policy is program specific the major's requirements).

Students must also rank in the top 35% of their class and have completed at least four courses within IUPUI's criminal justice curriculum. Graduate students are required to maintain a minimum of 3.7/4.0 GPA in both criminal justice and general courses and must have completed at least 50 percent of their public administration, public policy, or undergrad coursework .

Faculty

Since 1988, Alpha Phi Sigma has sponsored IUPUI's annual Criminal Justice Career Information Day, which brings a variety of agencies and organizations to campus, including the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the F.B.I., the U.S. SPEA Student Council is a great way for students to get involved. and bring about positive change in the school.
