Tourism in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan: Recent Status and Future Directions

The purpose of the research was to identify the tourism potential in Samarinda and discuss the possibilities for the future development of tourism. Secondary data exploration was conducted through the exploration, compilation and analysis of documents to generate information about the status of tourism in Samarinda. The increase in tourist visits in the province of East Kalimantan has a positive contribution to the growth of tourists in Samarinda.

According to official document regarding Samarinda City spatial planning [12], there are about 28 tourist objects that were found in Samarinda. In Samarinda city, the natural attraction ranges from water-based tourist attraction (i.e. waterfall and dam) to the park (Mulawarman Botanical Garden). From the perspective of a tourism product, the tourist attraction in Samarinda city can be said to be diverse and can potentially be used to promote a more interesting city tourism program.

Environmental consideration should be key to improving the quality and sustainability of a natural attraction. This can be seen in the case of the waterfall in the city of Samarinda. The environmental crisis in Samarinda appears to be linked to the impact of mining activity and forest degradation in East Kalimantan. In the city of Samarinda, there is accommodation, a restaurant, a medical facility and a business facility, which represent the readiness of Samarinda as a tourist destination.

Samarinda has 5 and 4 star hotels, 23 guesthouses, 76 restaurants, 8 souvenir galleries/art shops, 3 transportation companies, 5 terminals and 3 ports to support Samarinda tourism. These seem to be related to the history of Samarinda, in which the first activity of people in Samarinda was concentrated near the river.
