Abstract

Objectives: This study explored a multidimensional model of the relationships between social media use, gender, peer bullying victimization experiences, and the onset of anxiety symptoms among children. We hypothesized that greater experience of bullying would be associated with greater onset of anxiety. We also expected that gender and social media use (specifically Instagram and YouTube) would be linked with anxiety among elementary school children. To test this hypothesis, a structural equation modeling approach was used. Methods: A total of 456 elementary children aged 11–13 years from nine schools were recruited for this research. We used two psychological measures: The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) and the Personal Experience Checklist (PECK) as well as a sociodemographic questionnaire (general demographic information and social media- related information). Results: The social media usage survey found that all participants (100%) used social media. Instagram (52.42%) and YouTube (47.58%) were the platforms most used by the

Introducing the Concept of

Consonance-Disconsonance of Best Practice: A Focus on the

Development of ‘Student Profiling’

Huy P. Phan* and Bing H. Ngu

School of Education, University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia

The present study, using a non-experimental approach, investigated a theoretical concept of best practice, which we recently introduced – namely: a ‘state of consonance’ and a ‘state of disconsonance’ of best practice. Consonance of best practiceposits that different levels of best practice (e.g., low level of best practiceversus optimal level of best practice), as well as other comparable psychological constructs (e.g., motivation towards learning) would cluster or ‘group’ together.Disconsonance of best practice, in contrast, would indicate non-overlapping of contrasting levels of best practice (i.e., low level of best practiceversusoptimal level of best practice). Taiwanese undergraduates (N= 831) from five private universities in Taipei City and New Taipei City, Taiwan took part in the study by responding to a suite of Likert-scale questionnaires (e.g., Best Practice Questionnaires, Motivation towards Learning Questionnaire), which took approximately 30–35 min to complete. Cluster analysis, commonly known asClA, was used to analyze the data and seek theoretical understanding into the nature of the consonance of best practice. Results, overall, showed support for our proposition, resulting in four distinct profiles: ‘a Balanced Profile,’ ‘an Intrinsic Motivation Profile,’ ‘a Current Best Practice + Interest Profile,’ and ‘a Current Best Practice + Motivation Profile.’ This evidence, helping to advance further research development, has a number of practical implications for consideration. For example, how could we use the Balanced Profile to develop learning objectives and/or pedagogical practices that would encourage students to enjoy their learning experiences?

INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF BEST PRACTICE: THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘STUDENT PROFILING’

What is ‘student profiling’ or, alternatively, what does a student’s academic profile actually entail? An academic profile, in a general term, may indicate a specific pattern in cognition, motivation,and/or behavior that a student may exhibit(Phan et al., 2018a). Moreover, an academic profile may reflect a student’s historical background (e.g., his previous failures in mathematics), intellectual curiosity, personal interest, career pathway, and state of engagement or disengagement.

In recent years, learning materials have gradually been applied to flipped classrooms.

Teachers share learning materials, and students can preview the learning materials before class. During class, the teacher can discuss students’ questions from their notes from previewing the learning materials. The social media platform Facebook provides access to learning materials and diversified interactions, such as sharing knowledge, annotating learning materials, and establishing common objectives. Previous studies have explored the effect of flipped classrooms on students’ learning engagement, attitudes, and performance. In this paper, we apply educational data mining to explore the relationship between students’ viewing behaviors in accessing learning materials and their performance in flipped classrooms. The participants are classified into an experimental group and a control group to engage in flipped classroom activities. The experimental group uses the social media platform Facebook for flipped learning, and the control group uses a learning management system for flipped learning. The results show that there is a significant difference in the learning performance between the two groups, with the average score of the experimental group being higher than that of the control group. Furthermore, we find that the viewing behaviors and performance of the students within the experimental group differ significantly.

INTRODUCTION

With the popularity of flipped classrooms, most teachers have begun to implement the flipped learning approach, which allows students to preview learning materials before class. Flipped classrooms are a student-centered method; that is, students spend more time on and assume more responsibilities for preclass learning. Flipped classrooms are mainly divided into two modes: the preclass learning mode and the in-class learning mode (Kim et al., 2014; Su et al., 2014; Brinton et al., 2015; de Barba et al., 2016; Lai and Hwang, 2016; Li and Tsai, 2017; Long et al., 2017; Sun et al., 2017; Lee, 2018). Before class, the teacher applies the preclass learning mode, and students preview learning materials and complete quizzes to enhance their prior knowledge. In class, based on
