Classroom management is an important aspect in learning process, especially in English. It is one competence that must be mastered by the teacher, because classroom management is an action to manage classroom atmosphere to be effective and efficient to conduct the teaching learning activity. This includes the way the teacher to control the behavior of students in the classroom. Classroom management can help students to be discipline in the classroom and provide a comfortable learning environment.

Furthermore, if good classroom management will give positive effect on student achievement meanwhile bad

classroom management will cause a variety of students’ misbehavior.

Students' misbehavior is the negative actions of the students that can be detrimental to them. Students’ misbehavior can also possibly be found in teaching and learning process especially in English lesson. It is indicated by some students assumed that learning English is a difficult subject to understand that resulted in students being bored to learn. Therefore, some students do not pay attention to the teacher when the teacher explains the lesson. They will be looking for an activity to eliminate the boredom that is in their.

These activities are negative such as, disturbing friends, talking, loudly, calling

2 out, walking about the room, clowning, tossing objects, fooling around, out of the seat and not doing assigned-tasks that given by the teacher.

Based on the researcher’s experience when teaching practice at SMPN 18 Padang, the researcher found many kinds of students' misbehavior. The students talked loudly with other students.

They moved from one seat to other seat.

Students bothered the silent friend by taking his/her pen, they hit their friend who focused to do the task from the teacher or while the teacher explained the material.

Furthermore, the students refused to do what teacher ask them.

Moreover, based on the result of unstructured interview with the vice headmaster of student affair when researcher’s teaching learning practice, in general showed that there were some problems teaching and learning process in SMPN 18 Padang. The problems were: (1) students doing needless talk, like gossiping (2) annoying, (3) stealing, (4) talking and laughing inappropriately, (5) against teacher, (6) talking using rude words, (7) cheating, (8) fighting, (9) moving out the room, (10) disruption, and (11) paying inattention.

Sometimes, the students did not make any noise but still disturb the

effectiveness of teaching learning process because they are busy with themselves in the classroom without giving their attention to the teacher. For example, the students only did daydream while the teacher explained the material and they did not get anything. They use the paper to send a message to another friend, they also make the paper into a ball and tossed it to other friends and then they drawing their favorite cartoon on their book or paper.

Based on the phenomenon above, researcher wants to know the types and causes of students' misbehavior in English teaching learning process. Besides, the teacher should know what are the types and causes of students’ misbehavior that would be disturbed teaching learning process in the classroom.

Teaching learning process is an activity that happen in the class includes all interaction of teacher and students in the class. According to Chowdary (2004:2), teaching learning process is a means through which the teacher, the learners, the curriculum and other variables are organized in a systematic manner to attain pre-determined goals and objectives. It means that, teacher, students, curriculum and other variables are a medium in the learning process was systematic to achieve the aim of education.

(3)

3 Furthermore, Sankaranarayanan and Sindhu (2012:95) explain that teaching learning process is basically an interaction between the teacher and learners, which is aimed to bring about behavior modification in learners. It means that, interaction between teachers and students of the school, especially in the classroom that aim to change behavior for the better learners.

The importance of classroom management in the learning process must be understood by every teacher. Classroom management is defined as a process carried out by the teacher in controlling and managing a classroom during the learning process. A good classroom management will provide a good learning atmosphere and comfortable for students. Any condition that occurs in the classroom will have an impact on student achievement.

According to Marzano (2013:88), classroom management as the confluence of teacher actions in four distinct areas: (1) establishing and enforcing rules and procedures, (2) carrying out disciplinary actions, (3) maintaining effective teacher and student relationship, and (4) maintaining an appropriate mental set for management. It means that, classroom management is teachers’ behavior that can be divided into four parts in different fields. First, the teacher who acts in enforcing certain rules and procedures in

the learning process. Second, the teacher can discipline the students, also teacher have to maintain a good relationship with the students so that it can create effective teaching and learning processes in the class. And third is to safeguard and maintain the management class held by teacher. The last areas are interrelated and interconnectedness.

Moreover, Ming-tak and Li (2008:4) state that classroom management refers to teachers’ actions which lead to the creation of a learning environment where positive interpersonal interaction is promoted and effective learning is facilitated. It means that, classroom management refers to the teacher's behavior leads to the atmosphere classroom environment in create an effective classroom environment in teaching and learning process.

There are several factors that can affect classroom management, including internal factors and external factors. These internal factors associated with students' emotional, mind, and behavior. So the students' behavior can interfere with classroom management. According to Ming-tak and Li (2008:4), misbehaviour refers to behaviour that interferes with teaching, violating the right of other students to learn, and sometimes makes them feel psychologically uncomfortable

(4)

4 and physically unsafe. It means that, behavior that can be adverse, where there are few students in a class that interfere with other friends during the learning process. It will make other students feel uncomfortable and concentration in learning will be disrupted.

In addition, Crowder (2008:4) adds that misbehaviour as any disruptive behaviour caused by students while he or she is at school. It means that, an action is not well done by students while he or she is able to interfere with other students. It can be also adverse to students and teachers, because students in case of misbehavior, then the learning process will be disrupted.

In addition, Walters and Shelly (2007:110) adds that it is general believe that causes of students’ misbehaviour are:

1. Boredom is a common excuse that students give for acting out in the classroom. All students feel bored at one time another. Especially when teaching and learning poses. Some students do not pay attention when the teacher explains the lesson because the students are bored.

Therefore students will be doing other things that do not relates to the lesson to eliminate boredom.

2. Need for Attention. This desire to be recognized is a basic human need and something teachers cannot ignore. Every

person wants attention and will sometimes go to great lengths to get it. This desire for attention can even be subconsciously sought. Some students who do misbehavior are students who want to get the attention of teachers and friends in the class. It happens beacause most of students do not get their parent’s attention at home, so they will look for teacher’s attention at school.

3. Power is especially important to children who feel their lives are seriously out of balance. When this happens, they may try to balance the scale by controlling what goes on around them in the classroom. Some students get power by being passive-aggressive. Students who have power, then he/she will feel that he has the power in the classroom. Easily the students will master the class and make other students became afraid of him/her.

Students who have the power can only perform actions that can harm other students.

4. Revenge. There are things in life that are self-defeating, and revenge is one of them. Children who constantly demonstrate revengeful behavior often feel like they don’t belong. These might be the students who are constantly complaining about classroom rules not being fair. They might hurt other people in an effort to bring them to destructive behavior as well.

Some of their violent behaviors are unhealthy attempts to identify their own

(5)

5 feelings and their desires to have those feelings acknowledged by the teacher.

5. Self-Confidence. This problem extends to two extremes. They are too much self confidence or not enough. For those who feel completely inadequate, you will need to teach them that even if they can’t do everything perfectly, they can at least try different things. Often, these students assume the role of the helpless one. Self-confidence is often shown by the students, as some students who are not confident with the ability and the knowledge he/her has, then students will often reject a request for the teacher.

Wiseman and Hunt (2014:12) add that there are thirteen types of students’

misbehavior:

1. Inattention. Students' attention is not focused on the lessons teach by the teacher. In this type, students have the characters prefer to do other things that do not disturb other students, he / she is busy with his / herself. We can see some behavior that indicated by the student in this type, such as: daydreaming, doodling, looking out the window, and think about things irrelevant to the lesson.

2. Apathy is students do not have a sense of participation to the lesson. Usually students will look indifferent and do not care about the lesson, and did not have high curiosity. Such as: a disinclination to

participate, sulking, not caring, fear of failure, not wanting to try or do well.

3. Needless talk. Students are talking about unimportant things that are not related to the lesson. In this type, often found during the learning process. Many students talk to other students when the teacher explains the lesson. Most of them do not talk about things that relate to the lesson, for example: gossiping

4. Moving out the room. Students walking and moving around the classroom without asking permission from the teacher and raises a distraction for other students.

For example: getting up and moving about without permission, congregating in parts of the room.

5. Annoying is a behavior and action of the student that can disturb concentration other students to use the language or voice low. Students tease and disturb other student who is focusing on the lessons. For example: provoking, teasing, picking on, calling names.

6. Disruption. Student behavior in the form of action that can be distracting and attract attention to all that is in the classroom, when one of the students making noise or talking in a loud voice in the learning process, it can disturb the concentration of other students and the teacher when explains the lesson. For example of disruption: Shouting out during

(6)

6 instruction, talking and laughing inappropriately, using vulgar language.

7. Lying. Falsifying to avoid accepting responsibility or admitting wrong doing, or to get others in trouble. Lying is an attitude falsifying or lie undertaken by students to teacher to save himself from a mistake he has done, or do not want to admit his / her mistake. For example: lying to a teacher, lied to friends. Such as: taking homework other students and changed his name to our name.

8. Stealing. Taking things that belong to others. Stealing is usually do by students who want to have something that he never had, but are owned by other students.

Stealing can also be done by the students who need when in urgent, such as students who need a pen when he will test then he/she will steal a pen belonging to another student. For example of stealing: Such as:

stealing task from others students, stealing homework from others students, stealing pens other students.

9. Cheating. Making false

representations for personal benefit or wrongly taking advantage of others.

Cheating is a common misbehavior in the learning process. Cheating due to the character of students who are lazy in doing the exercises and do not understand the lesson, so that students do cheating to other students in the exercises, homework, and etc. For example: making homework in the

school, cheating it from other friend, and look at the answers of others students during exam.

10. Sexual harassment. A behavior or inappropriate actions performed by students. These actions will make others feel uncomfortable. We can see, the actions of the student in this type of misbehavior, such as: the boy touching the girl and otherwise that making others uncomfortable through touching, say a word that inappropriate to be spoken or sex-related language, sexual Innuendo.

11. Aggression and fighting. The behavior of the students in the form of physical violence committed against other students. Physical violence committed by students to other students is a very bad behavior, because this misbehavior can endanger others. Students who do physical violence is the students who have the character can not control the emotion that was in him/herself. For example: Showing hostility toward others, threatening, shoving.

12. Malicious mischief. Doing intentional damage to school property or the belongings of others. In this type, students undertake actions that can ruin the beauty of the school and classroom, and can be detrimental to the school. We can see there are some students who perform actions, such as: write and drawing off the

(7)

7 classroom walls, damaging chairs and tables in the classroom.

13. Defiance of authority. Rejection waged students to the teacher's request.

There are some students who reject the teacher's request when asked by the teacher to come in front of class. We can see that, this is happening because the character of students who are not confident, students are afraid and embarrassed in front of other students. For example of defiance authority: Talking back to the teacher, ignoring the teacher, or hostilely refusing to do as requested.
