While some experts report that the world is actually better off than at any time in the past (according to Our World in Data, the world is better off in terms of poverty, literacy, health, freedom and education), it can be hard to believe when television, radio and social media shout negative news on a constant basis. SECONDS
Twenty-five years earlier, my younger sister Denise ended her life just three weeks before her 18th birthday. Instead, I found myself repeatedly asking, "Why?" for the rest of my undergraduate years. I didn't understand why my sister ended her life, especially when she was about to go to college, at a time when I believed the world was becoming a man's oyster. But she was plagued by depression, bulimia, and date rape, which I only learned about after her death.
I was left to pick up the pieces and find my way forward again without the girl I shared a room with for 10 years - the girl who knew more about me than anyone else.
SECONDS SOMEONE TAKES THEIR LIFE
According to the American Suicide Squad, in the United States in 2016, the most recent year data is available, 44,965 people died by suicide. According to the World Health Organization, about 800,000 people die by suicide each year; roughly someone every 40 seconds. Peter Gutierrez, a professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, believes that change must come from focusing on it as a public health problem rather than a mental health problem.
The latest (Centers for Disease Control) report documents that just under half of people who die by suicide had a mental health problem," he says.

And it's sad to hear when a young person dies by suicide because of bullying. Robert Gebbia, the executive director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, believes the numbers will eventually start to drop because of exposure to the topic. According to the CDC, November and December are the months with the fewest suicides.
McIntosh points out that statistics show that suicide deaths are highest in spring, not winter as most people believe.
EVERYONE CAN DO SMALL THINGS EVERY
It is possible that more people experience stress or even depression during the winter months and holidays, but this depression does not increase the number of suicides. There are some issues related to depression and when it comes on — it goes up or down — that obviously aren't as distinct as the timing of someone's suicide," he says. The best thing you can do is be direct: Ask the person if he or she feels suicidal.
Everyone can do small things every day to increase their sense of connection with others, like regularly asking people how they are and listening to their responses,” says Gutierrez.
SENSE OF CONNECTION WITH OTHERS.”
When people say they are not doing well, struggle with problems or give other indicators that something is wrong, we need to be able to hear that and respond with empathy and concern." It's not just about educating people about how to prevent suicide and where to go for help. It is also about supporting the survivors - those who attempted suicide and lived and the bereaved, the people left behind after a suicide - to ensure that they do not also become suicide statistics.
It would fluctuate, but it was always in the back of my mind: 'If things get really bad, I can always kill myself.' the right opportunity to kill yourself.”

I consider my chronic suicidality as a chronic illness, so I try to maintain my health,” she says. It's a journey of searching for answers while grieving the loss of a loved one and reconciling the life you lived with the way that life ended. A step forward in one's grieving process is to separate the end of life from the life one has lived.

At the beginning of the year, I could count on one hand the number of people who could open a club in two days in a community they had never been to.
GROWING AGAIN
3 Las Vegas, Nevada has one of the world's largest Key Club populations with more than 3,000 high school students. His Eye of the Tiger club opening specialists came into Chicago, Denver, Kuala Lumpur and elsewhere to visit educators, mayors, business leaders and other community leaders to sell the need for new Kiwanis clubs. Vegas' strong Service Leadership programs were a major reason 2017-18 Kiwanis International President Jim Rochford chose the city for one. In Vegas, they intended to open three clubs, seeding each with double members from existing clubs as coaches.
THE RACE IS ON
Three months into the 2017-18 Kiwanis year, Emilia stepped in as the leader of the Eye of the Tiger in Latin America, and she hit the ground running.
