LIBRARY NEWS
A warm welcome is extended to a new library staff member, even as it is regretfully necessary to say good-bye to another. Mrs. Evelyn Allen came to the School of Dentistry library on September 1, 1966, and M..rs. Jane King w~ll be leaving the staff in mid-October.
Mrs. Allen is assuming the duties of the poat vacated by Mrs. Helen Campbell when the latter became librarian upon the retirement of Mrs. Mabel Walker as of June 30, 1966. Mrs. Allen was a member of the staff of the Shelbyville Public Library, Shelbyville, Indiana from 1959 until
1966.
In June, 1966, she received her MLS degree from Indiana University, Bloomington. She lived for nine years in Venezuela, South America and has two children -- a daughter who is currently employed in Madrid, Spain and a son who is connected with communications at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. In addition to the absorbing duties of librarian- ship, one of Mrs. Allen's chiefinterests is music and the collection of records.
Mrs.
King has served as assistant cataloger of the School of Dentistry library for the past year and will be leaving in October to return to her former place of residence, Buffalo, New York. Her husband, who has been connected with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, has accepted a position with the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra.l) OS I
September 30~ 1966 NEWS FROM DENTAL MATERIALS Professor R. W. Phillips was in Washington on the 8th of September, serving as a member of the Research Advisory Committee to the Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Army Dental Corps. On September 15th, he attended a meeting of the Committee on Teaching held in Chicago, Illinois.
September 19th found Professor Phillips delivering a lecture at the annual meeting of the Wisconsin chapter,
Academy of General Dentistry, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On September 26th, he
conducted a postgraduate course at Walter Reed Army Hospital; on September 27th, he served as consultant at the University of Virginia and on September 28th, he lectured at the Greater
Pittsburgh Meeting.
A recent visitor to the department was Doctor Ksuyoko Saito, noting the research and teaching activities.
Doctor Saito, from Nihon University in Japan caine to the United States following two years study at the University of Denmark and is visiting selected research facilities.
Mr. Raymond Doyle has left the
department to continue working for his master's degree in pharmacy at Purdue University.

FRESHMEN VISIT ANIMAL LAB
Mrs. Redford reports that she was quite pleased by the response of the touring groups of incoming Freshmen Dental Students who visited the IUSD Animal Laboratory, as a part of their
orientation.
ORAL DIAGNOSIS - ORAL MEDICINE Dr. David F. Mitchell visited the University of Colorado as consultant for the proposed new dental school on August 22-24. He spent vacation time with his family at a lakeside cottage.

Abu-Bakr Ramadan of Alexandria, Egypt were recent visitors to the department in August.We extend a cordial welcome to Mrs.
Sue Bea.stall, the new addition to the secretarial staff. Sue was formerly from Evansville, Indiana.
MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETICS
Dr. Varoujan Tchalian was a panelist at the American Academy of Maxillo- facial Prosthetics Workshop held in Washington, D.C., September 12-16.
The panels on which he participated were:
"Programs :for Training in the
Maxillofacial Discipline;" "Extra-Oral (Facial) and Body Prosthesis;" and
"The Maxillofacial Operatory and Laboratory. 77
On September 16th, Dr. Tchalian lectured to senior dental students and faculty members at the Medical College of
Virginia School of Dentistry, Richmond, Virginia, on "Maxillofacial Prosthetics as a Dental Specialty."
TEACHING CONFERENCE A SUCCESS One hundred fifteen members of the faculty, class representatives and guests from other schools participated in the second annual Faculty Teaching Conference held at the Spring Mill Inn, Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell,
Indiana, September 11-14, and agreed that the conference was very informative and stimulating. A complete report of the conference will be published in the next issue of the Alumni Bulletin of the IUSD.
NEWS FROM DENTAL DIVISION INDIANA STATE BOARD OF HEALTH The Dental Division is pleased to announce that Dr. Charles E. Smith has joined the staff. Dr. Smith is a
1961
graduate of the Indiana University School of Dentistry and received his master's degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan in1965.
He comes to us from Fort Wayne, where he has been working for the past year in the dental department at the Fort Wayne State School. We are most happy to welcome Dr. Smith and look forward to his assistance in workingprincipally with state institutions and fluoridation projects.
Also back with the Dental Division after

summer's leave is Miss Lillian 0. Dahl, R.D.H. Miss Dahl has had considerable experience in working with dental research projects and we are pleased to gain her experience in this field. She will work with the Divisionis clinical studies todetermine the feasibility of the self-application of topical fluoride compounds.
ORTHODONTIC DEPARTMENT NEWS
Dr. Charles Burstone was in Washington, D.C., September 20-22, attending a meeting of the dental study section of the Public Health Department. Dr.
Burstone recently accepted an appoint- ment to the dental study section, the main objective of which is to study and approve proposei public health research grants.
Mrs. Marilyn Harbaugh, technician in the department, has recently accepted a position in psychiatric research.

December. Before coming to Indianapolis he was in California for a year and a half.

HEALTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE Dean Maynard K. Hine, Dr. Ralph E.
McDonald and Dr. Joseph Muhler participated in the program of the Seventh Annual Northeastern Indiana School Health Education Conference, Wednesday, September 28th at St.
Francis College in Fort Wayne. The conference is sponsored by: St.
Francis College, the Indiana State Board of Health~ the Indiana State Medical Associationi the Indiana State Dental Association~ the Indiana State Department of Public Instruction, parochial schools of the state and the Parent Teachers' Association.
Dean Hine, the keynote speaker, addressed the conference on, "Challenge and
Change in Dentistry.u
CONFERENCE ON DENTAL AUXILIARY UTILIZATION
Dr. Ralph McDonald was at Georgetovm University September 20-21 to participate in a conference on Dental Auxiliary
Utilization. Fourteen eastern schools were represented at the conference.
On Thursday and Friday, September 22-23, Dr. McDonald participated in a meeting of the U.S.P.H.S. advisory committee on dental student training which was held in Bethesda, Maryland.
NEWS FROM ENDODONTICS
Dr. Harry J. Healey, president of the Indiana State Dental Association,
will represent that organization at the Centennial Celebration Meeting of the Ohio State Dental Association, October 1-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
From Columbus> Dr. Healey will continue on to Boston, Massachusetts where he will participate in conferences on Advanced Education in Endodontics, October

at the Forsythe Dental Center.Dr. Donald E. Arens was appointed as chairman of the Library Committee of the American Association of
Endodontists.
NEWS FROM PEDODONTICS
Dr. Paul Starkey was honored on Tuesday, September 20th, by the Dayton Study Club of the .American Society of Dentistry for Children, which met to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its founding, September, 1956. The group boasts a current membership of 85 and meets quarterly. Dr. Starkey spoke to the group regarding the activities of ASDC and its plans for the future.
He also discussed the report of the ADA task force to develop a national
dental health program for children, which has been approved by the Board of Trustees of ADA and will be presented to the House of Delegates in Dallas.
Dr. Starkey also met with the Wisconsin Society of Dentistry for Children, a unit of the ASDC, on Sunday and Monday, September 25 and 26th at Bailey's
Harbor~ Wisconsin.
