CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background.

The development of the world of information technology is currently increasingly rapid and penetrates into various worlds of human life to be able to play an active role in information technology, including schools that utilize information technology as one of the teaching media that is more interactive and communicative. The weak understanding of students to use 12 hours of time in daily life makes a benchmark in carrying out an activity that will be done or that has occurred so that it cannot be used as valid information. In the study of astronomy and falakiyah, there are two divisions of time, namely solar time and middle time. Solar time is the time adjusted according to the journey or movement of the sun shown by the sundial (sundial) in English called solar time, while the middle time (average) is the time adjusted to the sun which can sometimes be faster or slower than actual. Determination of this time is usually based on longitude which is used as a guideline for an area, in English called Mean Time.

B. Problem formulation 1. What is Telling Time?

2. What is the term Telling Time?

3. How is Telling Time used?

C. Objective

Based on the background and problem formulation above, the objectives of writing this paper are as follows:

1. To know what is the definition of Telling Time.

2. To Know What is the Term Telling Time 3. To Know How to Use Telling Time

(5)

CHAPTER II DISCUSSION 2 A. Definition of Telling Time

Telling time consists of two words "Telling" which means News and "Time" which means time. In terminology, Telling Time is an information related to the time given with the aim that someone knows the state of time at the time of activity. Telling Time is also better known in mentioning time in English.

B. Telling Time Terms

Telling Time has several terms contained in it, namely:

1. Ante Meridiem (A.M): 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

2. Post Meridiem (P.M) : 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

3. Long hand: Long needle 4. Short hand: Short needle 5. Second hand: Second hand 6. Alarm clock: Alarm clock 7. Clock: Wall clock

8. Watch: Watch 9. Hour : Clock 10. Minute : Minute 11. Second : Second

12. O'clock: Used to indicate when the long hand is exactly 12 o'clock.

13. Past: more 14. To: Less

15. A quarter: A quarter or 15 minutes 16. A Half: Half or 30 minutes

(6)

C. Materials and Practice Questions Telling the Time (Clock and Time)

There are generally two formulas for expressing hours, namely:

1. Hours + Minutes

This is the easiest way to tell the time, just read the numbers in English.

Example: 03.30 = It's two twenty-five 2. Minutes + past/to +hour

In this method we have to mention the minutes first and then the hour and use the words 'past' and 'to' to explain less or more minutes on the hour.

Example: 08.10 = It's ten past eight

To read the clock there are a few things we should pay attention to. The word O'clock is used for the exact hour, quarter is used to express a time that is 15 minutes less or more. While half is used to express a time that is more than 30 minutes. Let's see the explanation below.

3. Exact hour

If the clock shows the exact hour (the long hand is exactly 12) then we should say something like this:

It's seven o'clock.

It's nine o'clock (nine o'clock 09.00) It's eleven o'clock.

4. Over hour

If the long hand of the clock is 1-30 minutes over, then we should say:

It's ten minutes past nine.

It's a quarter past eleven (Eleven o'clock is over fifteen minutes/ 11.15)

It's a half past twelve (Twelve o'clock over thirty minutes / half past one / 12.30) 5. Hour less

If the long hand shows more than 31 minutes and above, then we should say:

It's ten to nine (Nine o'clock less ten minutes / 09.50) It's five to three (Three o'clock less five minutes / 02.55) It's a quarter to five (Five o'clock less fifteen minutes/ 04.45)

(7)

D. Use of Telling Time 1. Use of A.M (Ante Meridiem)

A.M stands for "Ante Meridiem" which means "before midday" or before midday which starts from 00:00-11.59.

Example: I go to school at 07.00 AM (I go to school at 07:00 AM)

We did cooperation from 09:00 AM to 11:00 AM (We did cooperation from 09:00 AM to 11:00 AM).

2. The use of P.M (Post Meridiem)

P.M stands for "Post Meridiem" in English also called "after midday" or after midday which starts from 12:00 - 23:59.

Example: I return home from school at 04:00 PM / 16:00 (I get home from school at 04:00 PM)

I have dinner at 08:00 PM / 20:00 (I have dinner at 08:00 PM).

3. Use of Seconds

The use of seconds on an analog clock hand serves to show detailed time before the clock hand shows at 60 seconds, if the second hand of the clock is more than 60 it will move 1 minute on the long hand.Example: Rangga recorded the 100 M running championship in 9.58 seconds.

4. Use of the Long Needle

The long hand on an analog clock is used to show the time on the minute.

a. O'clock is a formal way of expressing the clock in English. The term o'clock is used when the long hand refers to the number 12.

(8)

In Indonesian, o'clock is also translated as 'precise', aka no less or no more.

How to read a clock using o'clock will begin with the hour in question, then end with the word o'clock.

Example:

It's four o'clock A.M. (it's 4:00 a.m. sharp)

It's two o'clock P.M (it's 14:00 p.m. sharp)

b. More

When the hour is over or when the long hand is at numbers 1 to 6, it is pronounced using past. The pronunciation rule is "minute+hour". So, say the minute first and then the hour.

Example:

It's ten past eight (it's eight minutes past ten or08.10)

c. Less

When the clock shows less or when the long hand is at 7 to 11, the pronunciation is to . The pronunciation rule is "minute+hour". However, the hour is added 1 from the hour shown.

Example:

(9)

I arrived in Jakarta at two to ten minutes AM (I arrived in Jakarta at two minutes less than ten minutes).

d. Quarter-length is used when it is exactly at positions 3 and 9 (when the hands are 15 minutes less or more).

Example:

A quarter past four (it's a quarter past four)

A quarter to four (now quarter to four)

e. Half

Half past is used to indicate over/under 30 minutes (the long hand is at 6). To use half past, you must read the minutes first, after reading the hour.

Example: It is half past six (it is 6:30 am)

(10)

5. Short Needle Usage

The Short hand is used to show time in general.

Example: What time is it?

6. Hour Usage (Hours)

An hour is a unit of time. The length of an hour is 1/24 (one twenty-fourth) of a day. An hour can be divided into smaller units of time. An hour consists of:

a. 60 minutes b. 3,600 seconds

The word hour shows the meaning of "period" or "period of time". Thus, if what you want to express is *time" or "period of time", the correct word to use is as follows:

a. Teaching and learning activities at school last for seven hours a day.

b. The trip to Surabaya took about five hours.

c. Every six hours, he should take medicine.

In addition to being used to express the meaning of "Time" or "Period of Time", the word clock also means "timepiece" or *watch".

E. Date

Asking and stating the date, to state the date using the first, second, third, fourth and so on. So to state one uses "first" not "one". (Asking and expressing dates, to express dates use the numbers first, second, third, fourth and so on. So to express one use "first" instead of "one") 1. First (1st)

Second (2rd) 3. Third (3rd) 4. Fourth (4th) 5. Fifth (5th) 6. Sixth (6th) 7. Seven (7th)

To ask a date can be done with the question "What is the date...?", the points can be filled with today, tomorrow. Besides that writing can begin with What date (what date) then followed by time for example: today, now. If activities or events related to the day that were followed were followed, then the words help adjust. (To ask for the date, the question "What is the date"

can be filled in with today, tomorrow. In addition, the writing can begin with What date (what

(11)

date) then followed by time, for example: today, now. If followed by an activity or event related to the day in question then the auxiliary word adjusts).

Example:

2 3

What date is your birth date day?

What date did you see her for the first time?

What date do you celebrate your birthday?

Just like in stating time, stating dates also starts with the word "It" as the object of the sentence. If you don't use the word "it", you can use the time in question, such as today, now, tomorrow. If you use the activity in question, you can mention the activity, for example, my birthday is on the first of August. To express the date can be done in two ways, namely,

1. First with the date first:

Example: the eighth of January 1987= it is the eighth of January Nineteen eigthty-seven.

2. The second with the first month revealed barı the date:

Example: January 8, 1987 = Today is January the eighth.

3. If the date is used in sentence form, the preposition used is "On"

Example: My father started to work in the office on the second of January, nineteen seventy-two.

Method 1

Today is November 1st Today is April 2nd Today is May 3rd Today is January 7th Today is the twentieth of February

It is the twenty-third of December Method 2

It is the first of November It is now April the second It may be the third

It's January the seventh It's February the twentieth

It is currently December the twenty-third

Today is the twenty-first of August It is the twenty-first of August
