Through the indulgence of dtvinc good-
lo'·I~IIIJ;,
we have
had another associationseasson, which
fumi~hesao
opportunity of
a~ain addressing a Circular Letter to the Qrches. Wehave
sdcctedthe
subjectof
Brotherly LovP, astopic of this letter.
It is assuredly, brethren,one of
much portance, and cannot be too oflen and too earnestly urged_the
disciplesof the
dear Rcdermrr;nor
betoo ardently and Allllduously cultivated
byevery chilrl of God. "A new
COlll-dment," said Jesus," I
giveunto you, that ye love one an- ther;"
and he enforces it in these words" As Ihave
lo·;edyou
1that ye
alsolove
one another.:'At this distressing crisis io the Z
ion of God, itis, in our e5~
.as breth;e11 :' cllildreu of the same Father, and heirs of the same glory. Th~ sacn~d volume gives us distinctly to know, that if we love uot our hr(·thren, whom we have seton, we assurt>dly do not lov•· God, whom we have not seen. It teaches Utl that
"By this we sh:11l know that we have passed from death unto )ifp because we love the brethren." Oh what a heavenl} prin·
cipi~'! How it assimilates the disciple to the likeness of his Lord! Bre(thren, if we know that
HE
loved us, we ought also to love one another. "Love worketh no ill to his nt>ighbor ;"it is the sacred cement oftlte Christian commumty. If abound- in!! in the heart and life, 1t will operate as A powerful prevent.
ativc to dtscurd, disunion, and distress amonJ?st the dear di~ri·
plt!S of the ever blessed Jesus. It will destroy all those forbid- den and hatdul passions of envy, and malice, and hatred. and tho!!P u u.·hristia•a prarticPs of evil speakir.g and backbiting, too often, alas! indulged in by many who profess the religion of
Christ.
Brotherly love will keep alive, in our hearts, a holy jealousy for the character and reputation of each other; whilst it will cause us to walk together in love as dear children, constrain·
ing us to este€'m each other better than ourselves. "Behold how good and how pleasant it is. for brethren to dwell togeth·
er in unity;" but without love there can be no union.
"Our stubborn sins lVill fight and reign,
"lflove be absent there."
The word of God is profuse in its commands on this interest·
iflg subject. Suffer then, dear brethren, the word of exhorta·
tion, "Let love be without dissimulation;" seeir.g that ye have purified .Your souls in obeying the truth through the
spirit
un·to unf('igned love of the brethren; see that ye love ene auother with pure he11rt~ ferver.tly. It is one of the hlessed fruits of the holy Spirit.
By
it ~hall all men know that we are his dis·ciplt>~. May the God of all Grace cause the abounding of this heaveu-born and God-like principle more and more amongst the familv of his Saints.
Are we asked, .vho are we to love as brethren 1 W c answer, all those who evidence by their walk and conversation that
!hey have been born of the holy Spirit
?f
God; and who' man·1fest that they love our Lord Jesus Cbmt by keeping his corn·
m:-tndments •
. For iuf01mation on ~he business transacted by the Associa·
f.wn at her present sesston, we refer you to the minutes.
And now, dear brethren, be ye steadfast and immovable, al-
the God of peace be with and hless you, with all spiriual bless~
sngs
in heavenly places in Christ Jt·sus.Your brethren in gospel bonds.
