CIRCULAR.

Tl/£ Messenge?,s composing tile L07lg Run Association to the Churches tlll;'Y represent, Grace be unto !Iou, 11f~y and Peace be multiplied.

DEAR BRETHREN.-Smce our last annual address to you, we have experienced many of the ~.hcckered scenes of life, but not unmixed with some degree of peace, love, joy and praise to God for his great love and, condescension to fallen men, in bring!ng them or many of them, who knew not the way of peace, (which is the subject of this address) to witness the heart cheering tidings and songs of Angels, who with rapture were heard to say glory to liod in t.he highest, peace, good will towards men, and are now thesuujt::eh! uf their King, the increase of whose goverllmE'nt and peace, tllCre shall be no end. As all men naturally are Despotic &', disposed to seek destruction and war, itis reasonabietosupposethat those who have received the peace of God tha t l'asseth all understanding, should live peac.eabl y, and follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

A'neglect to pursue this lleavenly course has deprived many of the evidence of the beart-endearing relation. Children of God, we should bepeace-maiwrs as so many component parIs of the same body, bound by the nearest and dearest of all ties, governed by the best of alllaws,cTOvvned by the greatest of all Kings, whose wisdom guides, whose power protects, and ends our days in peace. Let us therefore apply the sword of the spil'it, holden in the hancl of faith, that C\;ery thing inimical to Zion's p~ace may beput to fligbt. But alas, where shall we be begin, with the world1 Yes, most assuredlv, if tf~qnd qm(\n(l'1J.;:_::~~n().uir'r;f)n:=;!': frf'lrr'! tl!n \\~~tCll!l1:m.1atlH:~i£.!!"rI(\1' '::'~1~

of till) fold, is tiiefe a. cry who shall be the grealest? t.ile chii,; iile exampie tives. .It is ~tter to put

lip

Peter's. carnal sword than like a Peter weep.

}'be fruit of righteousness IS sown III peace of thew that make peace.

or

all men on earth, the servants of God ehould be the most careful to adhere to the commands of Christ, that peace might flow like a river and righteousness as the wa\'es of the sea; Being charged before God and the Lord Jesus Christ to preach the word, to exhort, reprove, rebuke, &c. with all long suffering and doctrine, to be patient in all thingsj enduring hardncss; as good soldiers ,.of Jesus Christ; shewing themselves as ensamples to the flock. But if thetrum- •

pet gives an uncertain sound, who shall know.lJow to prepare himself for battle?·

Let the solftest words of peace which from the Gospel flows put words of stnfe to flight, and allnur wrath will cease. The tongue IS more dcstructive to the peace of society than any other instrument of war. It seteth on fire lhe\vhole courscof nature, and it isseton fire of Hell. Be carefllltherefore brethren one and all 1.0 guard against speaking evil of any man; but words 'Of peace reveal. But this is not all that .mars t.he peace of Zion's Pilgrims, for in many instances a worldly and avaricious spirit-discJoses itself by an

unwillin~nes;; to attend on divine worship or days of church business, or to extend the hand

or

charity to the needy, or the poor. Pure religion and undefiled before God, is to visit the fatherlells and widows in their afilictiont;, und keep yourselves unspotted fi'om the world. Behold your Judge enthron- ed and hear the sentence given! then ask yourselves for peace. But the nature of this a:ldress is too limited to treat upon thesnbject ~t large. We spall therefore close by noticing one or two other cases in which the peace of many ,is destroyed , as arising more parhcular!y from distmst or a kind of whimsical spirit too frequently seen in disobedient peevish children, who are always looking to the parentfoi' mOJ'ethan he ever promished, asd because they cannot obtain their desires, arc ready to disttact. the whole family.

Others appear to complain for want of strength to do their masters will, but for the most feeble of the flock an armor is prepared to shield his soul, defend his peace and lmng him home to God. F'inally brethren, be at peace amoilg yourselves, an~ the God of peac6shall dwell with you all.
