Musik Abad Pertengahan atau Middle Ages (450-1450)
Musik ini telah ada sejak bangsa Yunani dan Ibrani. Sebenarnya, musik ini merupakan doa-doa liturgi yang ditembangkan, sehingga sangat
dipengaruhi oleh aktivitas gereja. Musik yang dikenal adalah gregorian. Saat itu, alat musik belum ditemukan.Musik pada awal abad ini bersifat
monofonik, artinya didominasi oleh satu suara saja. Komposisi dinyanyikan tanpa tekanan dan bergantung pada improvisasi. Pada abad XI dikenal adanya teknik counterpoint, yaitu penggunaan harmonisasi dengan gerakan
nada-nada yang berlawanan dengan melodi aslinya (inversi).
Musik Renaisans adalah musik klasik yang digubah pada Zaman Renaisans, sekitar tahun 1450 sampai dengan 1600. Penentuan batas awal zaman musik ini sulit dilakukan karena tidak terdapat
perubahan besar dalam musik pada abad ke-15, selain juga bahwa musik dalam perkembangannya mendapatkan ciri-ciri
"Renaisans" secara bertahap. Disebut renaissance sebab muncul seiring perkembangan pengetahuan dan seni

Zaman Barok
Musik Barok adalah musik klasik barat yang digubah pada Zaman Barok (Baroque), kira-kira antara tahun 1600 dan 1750. Zaman ini berlangsung sesudah Zaman Renaisans dan sebelum Zaman Klasik. Sebenarnya, kata
"Barok" itu berarti "mutiara yang tidak berbentuk wajar", sangat pas dengan seni dan perancangan bangunan pada era ini; kemudian kata ini
juga dipakai untuk jenis musik itu. Musik Barok biasanya hanya
mencerminkan satu jenis emosi saja. Dibanding dengan Musik Klasik dan
Romantik, musik Barok jarang mempunyai modulasi atau rubato. Untuk
komposisi piano, pedal jarang digunakan saat memainkan musik Barok.
