CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

NAME

ADDRESS

The idea for the ride first arose from the 1973 National FFA Convention, where participants were challenged to commemorate the upcoming bicentennial with worthwhile activities. Donations were collected and donors' names were written on Indiana Tulip Poplar plaques and then attached to the float for permanent display. FFA members (groups of four or five from different Indiana chapters participated in the float for four days) were sent off with the official Hoosier flag.

Each night after their daily 20-mile trek, the FFA escort team would present a specially prepared heritage program to the host FFA chapter. The program included the presentation of a special play about Indiana agriculture and usually ended with the official signing of a pledge of rededication aimed at renewing beliefs in the principles of our country. The hosts were ceremoniously presented with recognition plaques made from Indiana limestone and Indiana Tulip Poplar.

But despite these problems, the wagon arrived "on time" and became one of the main attractions at the National. After the convention, the wagon was taken back to the FFA camp in Indiana, where it will be on permanent display as a memento of the bicentennial pilgrimage and the spirit of adventure it represented.

Asked by the Lisbon, Connecticut Historical Society to help dismantle an eighteenth-century house and barn, the chapter accepted the task as their Building Our American Committees project. The historic old barn was removed from its site, then completely reassembled at the local vo-ag shop as part of Woodrow Wilson High's Bicentennial Open House Show. Numerous animal exhibits, similar to cattle raised in the 1700s, were housed in the barn helping to explain the history of agricultural production.

After the open house, the Matabesett Chapter once again dismantled the barn for restoration at a nearby site. SEEING THE FLAG - "When a thoughtful mind sees a country's flag, it sees not only the flag, but the country itself. We hope that the purpose of this column - to show how FFA chapters across the country have observed the occasion in their own special way - has been achieved .

But more importantly, we hope that through our attention to such activities, the spirit of this special year will permeate our nation's Third Century with you and the one and a half million Future Farmers of America.

THE PULLER

BIG ROUND BALES?

This means that the wheels must be 66 to 72 inches wide between the tires to prevent running over the cut hay. Hay handling equipment is also a prerequisite if you plan to transport bales for storage. The most common method used today is a tractor equipped with a front loader (bucket or fork).

However, lifting a bale over the hood of a tractor can be an extremely dangerous practice. These single bale engines turn the tractor into a versatile machine for moving a single bale quickly over short distances. A weaving pattern must be maintained to alternately feed the hay from one side of the baler to the other.

The number of twine wraps to take around a finished bale is determined by the number of times it will be removed, the severity of the weather to which it must be exposed, and the length of the storage period. When it is necessary to use a front-mounted loader, place ballast near the rear of the tractor to improve traction and stability.
