NATURAL SCIENCES OF PHILADELPHIA. 755
ON A COLLECTION OF BIRDS FROM BRITISH EAST AFRICA OBTAINED BY MR. GEORGE
L.HARRISON,
JR.BY WITMER STONE.
The Academy
ofNatural
Sciences of Philadelphiahas
recently receivedon
depositfrom Mr. George
L. Harrison, Jr.,a
collection of birdsobtained by him on
his travelsthrough
CentralEast
Africa in 1904.Through the
courtesy ofMr. Harrison and
theAcademy
Ihave had
the privilege ofstudying
this collectionand
ofpreparing a
reportupon
it.^^^lile
only one
ofthe species representedproves
tobe new
toscience,the
collection illustratesmany
interesting points inconnection with
seasonaland
sexualplumages. The specimens
are beautifully pre- pared,and
this fact,togetherwith
thefullness ofthe data which accom- pany them,
renders thecollection exceptionally valuable.Mr. Harrison has favored me with the
following outline of his route:
"We
leftNairobi on May
16, 1904,and
arrived atFort Hall on May
30,
spending
afew days
there.From Fort Hall
Itook a
tripdown
the
Tana
river, and should have made a much
better collectionbut
for the factthat both Camburn, my taxidermist, and myself
suffered
very
severely with
fever, and were
laid up
for some weeks.
I got back
toFort Hall on July
9and
sentCamburn
infrom
there to Nairobi.
In
themeantime
Itook
a tripand met him
atNaivasha on August
24.We thenstartedalong
theMorandat
rivertoEl Bolossa swamp, thence
to Pesiswamp and along
the Guaso
Nyiro, until well north
of Mount Kenia.
I then
sentCamburn back over
the Abed
are range, which he
crossed at an
altitude of about
10,500 feet, while I got back
to
Nairobi on November
4."
On account
ofthe
lack ofadequate
material forcomparison
Ihave,
asa
rule,made no attempt
toindicate subspecificrelationship,although a number
offorms here recognized
certainly intergradewith
otherswhose ranges they
adjoin.In the sequence
of familiesand genera
Ihave
followed Dr.Bowdler
Sharpe's classification.PHASIANID^.

Sharpe and most authors quote
thisgenus
in theemended form
Porphijriolafrom
Sundevall, 1872.The
original reference,however,
isBlyth, Cat. Birds,
Mus.
Asiat. Soc.Bengal, p.283.While the genus
is
not
described,a type
species,Porphyrio
chloronotus[=
alleni] ismen-
tioned,
which
is allthat
is necessary.The date
of Blyth'sCatalogue on the
title-pageis 1S49,which
isalsothe year
inwhich the type
specieswas
describedby him; and from the
factthat he
leavesthe page
refer-ence
to Jour. Asiat.Soc, XVIII, where the
description occurs, blank,we should
inferthat
ithad not appeared when he proposed the new
generic
name. Furthermore, the very paper
inwhich P.
chloronotusis described is entitled a
supplement
tothe Catalogue! This would seem
tomake Porphyrula untenable, being based on
anomen nudum.

On the
otherhand, the appendix
ofthe
Catalogue,which has every appearance
ofbeing
strictlya part
of it, isdated
1852. If this isthe

avail- able,but
it will also raisethe question
of prioritybetween

tobe badly needed.

Ihave
receivedthrough

aseries of C. prinoides, collectedby Dr. W.

forcomparison with
this spec-imen.
I find that C. harrisoni is atonce
distinguishedby the more uniform,
less striped back,by
the brighter,more ochraceous tone
ofthe upper
partsand
the lackofdecided
contrastbetween
the color ofthe head and
back.The
bill ismoreover
distinctlymore
slender.Another Kilimanjaro specimen,
identifiedby Mr. Oberholser^
as C.hunteri, is also before
me, and appears
tobe more nearly
allied to C.prinoides
than
to C. harrisoni, differing in its duller, more sooty
col- oration.While
all three are closelyrelated, C.harrisonistands
atone extreme
of theseries wellremoved from
the other two.130. Cisticolaoisticola (Temm.).
