NEW FRESH-WATER MOLLUSKS FROM NORTHERN ASIA
By ALAN MOZLEY
Walter Rathbonc Bacon Scholar, Smithsonian Institution
(With One
Plate)During
the years 1932and
1933 a journeywas made
through cer- tain parts of Siberiaand
northern Kazakstan, under the grant of theWalter Rathbone Bacon
Scholarship' of the Smithsonian Institution.The
object of this expeditionwas
to investigate themoUuscan
fauna of the region,and
in thecourse ofworking up
the material collected, severalforms
have beendiscoveredwhich
appeartobe undescribed.A
report
on
the fauna as awhole
will appear at a later date, but in themeantime
it appearstobe desirable to placeon
record a briefdescrip- tion of thenew
forms,which
isgivenbelow.VALVATA ANTIQUILINA,
n. sp.Plate I, fig. 4
Shell of
moderate
size formembers
of this genus, length 6.4mm,
broadlyconical;surfacesmooth, with
minute crowded
linesofgrowth
;
whorls four
and
seven-eighths,convex, very slightly flattened; aperture subcircular, veryslightlyangulated alongthe superiormargin, lip con- tinuous, attached to thepreceding whorl forabout0.6mm. The
dimen- sions of the type are as follows:Length
6.4mm,
greater diameter 5.9mm,
lesser diameter 5.2mm,
aperture length 3.1mm,
aperture width2.5mm.

Bulat drainage basin, Siberia. This is approximately370
kilometers southeast ofOmsk.
This species has
some
resemblanceto both V. piscinalis (Miiller),and
V. antiqua Morris,and
inmany
respects is intermediatebetween thesetwo
species. Itdiffersfrom most forms
ofV. piscinalis inhaving'Created through a bequest to the Institution by Mrs. Virginia Purdy Bacon

the shell as a whole
more
solidly built, the spiremore
bluntly conical, andthe whorls less broadlyrounded, thosein thenew
species being a little flattened, and turning sharply into the suture. J\ antiquilina differsfrom
V. antlqua Morris (pi. i. fig. 5) inthe proporticjns of the shell (seemeasurements
below), thenew form
being slightlymore
broadly built, in having the suture a little deeper, and in the whorls being regularly rounded andslightly tiattened, ratlierthan rounded and projectingdownward
as in /'. antlqua.No
living specimenswere
found, all the shells beingempty
and bleached. Apparently this species lived inLake Khomotenoye

the water level stood considerably higher than at present.Measurements of flic SItells oj J'alvata antiquilina, n. .9/)., }roni the Shore nj Lake KJiomolenoyc, Siberia

The
four sul>species ofLymnaea
palustris here described are all closely similar, but inany
moderately large series it ispossible to dis- tinguish the differentforms
without difficulty.Lymnaea
palustris saridalensis is characterized by the tall spire, slightlyconvex
whorls, and moderately impressed suture; kasakensis is distinguished by even higherspire, slightlyconvex
whorls turning sharplyintoadeepsuture;dravcrtiby its shorter

microscopic spiralimpressedlines;whorlsfive,con- vex, protruding and well rounded in all cases; thebody
whorl nearly semicircular in outlineon
the left side; havinga slightly shouldered appearance at the junction with the preceding whcjrl, Init actually havinga smallV-shaped
depression intervening and continuing around the shell for at least one whorl above the aperture; aperture ovate- ellipsoidal; outer lip thin, sharp; inner lip gradually curving, colu- mella nearly flat, not twisted, spreading out tosome
extent over the umbilical region,which
is seenfrom
