Platytriccusgen. nov. (Tyrannidae.)

SimilartoPlatyrinchusDesmarest*buttail relatively

much

shorter (but little

more

than halfas longaswing),wing relativelyshorter

and much more

rounded,the longest primaries exceeding distalsecondaries

by

not

more

(usually

much

less) thanhalfthe length oftarsus,

and by

lessthan one-third the length oftail,the tenth (outermost)primarynot longerthan third (usually shorterthanfirst); tarsus nearlytoquite one-thirdaslong aswing,

much

longer thanmiddletoewith claw, nearlytoquite twiceas longasexposed

culmen

; feathersofchin withoutbristly points.

Type,PlatyrhynchuscancromaSclater.

and

rpticKos,a smallbird.)

Species: Platytriccuscancroma(Sclater); Platytriccusalbogularis (Sclater);

Platytriccusmystaceus(Vieillot); Platytriccus insularis(Allen); Platytriccus bifasciatus (Allen). Probablyalso the following,which, however,I have notseen: Platyrhynchussenex Sclater

Similarinpattern of colorationtoChlorospinguspileatMs Salvin,butcolor ofchest, sides,

and

flanks pale yellowish olive,not distinctlycontrasted with the pale gray of throat

and abdomen

(instead of brightolive-yellow, strongly

and

abruptly contrasted with gray of

abdomen,

etc.),oliveof back,

etc., rather duller,

and

black of

head

less intense (slightly

more

slaty).

Young

very different in color from that of C. pilcatiis, the back, etc., grayish olive (insteadofolive-green),thegroundcolorof underparts pale brownish gray instead of olive-yellow.

Higher partsof volcanos of Irazu

and

Turrialba, Costa Rica, at upper limitofforest

and

lowerportion of ash-cones (altitudeabout 9,000-10,500 feet.

Thisspeciesisfoundinthe

same

localitieswithC. pileatus,both on Irazii

and

Turrialba; consequently, there being no question as to its being differentitmust,notwithstandingthe character of thedifferences,be given specificrank. Thereisaconsiderableseriesofthisformin the CostaRican National

Museum,

thatinthecollectionoftheU.S.National

Museum

con sistingofeleven adults

and

one

young

birdinfirstplumage.

I refer to thisform with

much

doubt asinglespecimen (an adultmale) obtained

by me

on theVolcano of Turrialba

May

2,1905. This differs

fromallothersingreater length of thetail (which measures67.5

mm.,

the

maximum

of fourmalesof true C. zeledonibeing65,the

minimum

61

mm.

and

ofsixfemales 64

and

55respectively),

and

inthealmosttotalabsence of

any

olivetingeonthe underparts,whichare of a nearlyuniformpale gray, onlythesides

and

flanksbeingdistinctlytingedwithpaleolive-green.

The

back,etc.,arealsovery

much

duller

and

grayerolive-green.

my companion

during

many

pleasant

and

successful collecting trips inCostaRica.

Trinidad, butduller in color,the adultmale with rump, uppertail-coverts,

much

grayer

exposed culmen,17.5; tarsus,23-24.5 (23.7); middletoe, 15.5.

Thisform isverydistinct from

any

ot^ierofits Central

American

con geners,

and

requires comparison only with P. rubra ofVenezuela

and

Trinidad,fromwhich itiseasilydistinguished

by

the charactersmentioned above. InadditiontothespecimensinthecollectionoftheU.S.National

Museum
