SimilartoPlatyrinchusDesmarest*buttail relatively
much
shorter (but littlemore
than halfas longaswing),wing relativelyshorterand much more
rounded,the longest primaries exceeding distalsecondariesby
notmore
(usuallymuch
less) thanhalfthe length oftarsus,and by
lessthan one-third the length oftail,the tenth (outermost)primarynot longerthan third (usually shorterthanfirst); tarsus nearlytoquite one-thirdaslong aswing,much
longer thanmiddletoewith claw, nearlytoquite twiceas longasexposedculmen
; feathersofchin withoutbristly points.Type,PlatyrhynchuscancromaSclater.

localitieswithC. pileatus,both on Iraziiand
Turrialba; consequently, there being no question as to its being differentitmust,notwithstandingthe character of thedifferences,be given specificrank. Thereisaconsiderableseriesofthisformin the CostaRican NationalMuseum,
thatinthecollectionoftheU.S.NationalMuseum
con sistingofeleven adultsand
oneyoung
birdinfirstplumage.I refer to thisform with
much
doubt asinglespecimen (an adultmale) obtainedby me
on theVolcano of TurrialbaMay
2,1905. This differsfromallothersingreater length of thetail (which measures67.5
mm.,
themaximum
of fourmalesof true C. zeledonibeing65,theminimum
61mm.
and
ofsixfemales 64and
55respectively),and
inthealmosttotalabsence ofany
olivetingeonthe underparts,whichare of a nearlyuniformpale gray, onlythesidesand
flanksbeingdistinctlytingedwithpaleolive-green.The
back,etc.,arealsovery
much
dullerand
grayerolive-green.Named
