A NEW HONEY CREEPER FROM SAN MIGUEL
ISLAND, PANAMA.
BY OUTRAM BANGS.
When
Iwrote the
list ofbirds collected by W. W. Brown,
Jr., inSan Miguel
Island,Archipelago de
las Perlas, inthe Bay
ofPanama, one species — the yellow honey creeper — was not com- pared with
sufficientcare with related forms, and
Idiscovered,
much
tomy
regret,too
late toincorporate
it inmy paper, which appeared
inthe Auk
forJanuary, 1901, that
thisbird
isa strongly characterized island
species.Dr. Robert Ridgway, when
atwork on the genus
Ccereba for hisgreat book on American
birds,com- pared the San Miguel Island specimens
carefullywith
C. luieolaand
C.mexkafia, and
atonce detected the
differences. He most kindly wrote me about the matter, and gave me
achance
tocorrect my mistake. Strangely enough, the
affinities ofthe species
liemuch more
closelywith
C. luteola ofVenezuela, Trinidad, and northeastern Colombia, than with
C.mexicana
ofthe neighboring coasts
ofPanama and western Colombia.
The
Ccereba ofSan Miguel Island, which
inmy paper on the
birds
of thatisland (Auk,
Jan.,1901,
p.30) appears
as Ccerebamexicana cohcmbiana should instead be known as
